Any tips on learning slide guitar?

Practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, and then

a little more practice

It really comes with time. Thats the main thing. Try an open tuning, like G or D. And just goof around with it until you can get notes and stuff like that clean and clear. Then go after songs. Thats what I did.

Thats a good way to learn. Im pretty sure that Rory does do some slide stuff in standard. It is possible, its just different. In order to play in standard you basically have to play the notes in scales and stuff like that. When I do it I just play the notes in whatever pentatonic scale im using with a a slide.

If your playing electric blues rock type slide, you can get away with doin it in standard, but acoustic wise, its prety much impossible to do it and have it sound good.

Yeah, Stevie also uses slide in 'dirty pool' if I am not mistaken?

The key to learning to play good slide, is choose your tuning (i think someone recommended Open E...also known as the Joe walsh Tuning)

Also its very important to damp the strings behind the slide. I play with the slide on my ring finger and use the middle and index to deaden behind the bar, its also handy to use the "meat" of your right hand to help stop any unwanted strings sounding. basically, all you need to hear are the string(s) you are picking, everything else needs to be muted with one hand or the other.

Have a listen to a few great slide players:
Joe Walsh (obviously)
Ry Cooder
Dwayne Allman (and his brother Dwayne Pipe)
and the maestro of slide ...Mr Sonny Landreth, who actually plays chords behind the slide finger...phewwwww!
