((The title of this thread, if you've never heard of the Rolling Stones, is in reference to their song Paint it, Black.))
The Primary Ingredients
Name: Severus Snape
House: Slytherin
Birthday: January 9, 1960
Childhood Home: Spinner’s End; Manchester, England (the Lexicon suggests the approximate location is Manchester, of the industrial North of England, so I’m going with that)
Blood Status: Claims he is pure-blooded in order to fit into his House but is really only a half-blood.
Appearance:
Severus is on the tall and scrawny side for his age, with long legs and arms with a relatively moderate-sized torso. He’s not broad shouldered, and would have the build of a seeker if he enjoyed playing Quidditch. His feet and hands aren’t exactly over-sized, but they aren’t small either. As far as musculature goes he’s not exactly buff but he’s not frail. If one had to venture a guess, he’s likely slightly shorter than Sirius Black, who is slightly shorter than James, and the fact that Sev is shorter than the both of them does not smooth relations with them at all! Whereas James has an air about him that suggests a highly-pampered childhood, Severus’ appearance gives one the feeling he was not treated so well at home.
His face is thin, slightly on the gaunt side, with irises so dark they may as well be black. These piercing eyes sometimes seem to delve so deep into their target that it seems he’s attempting to read the person’s mind, and are set slightly deeper than most. His skin is quite pale, almost alabaster, and if outdoors too long it will burn before it tans. Curtaining his face are sheets of black shoulder-length, greasy hair, though he’ll tell anyone that will listen that it is oily, not greasy. It runs in the family, regrettably on his mother’s side, and Severus is often teased about it. It’s not that he doesn’t wash it; it just occurs naturally. Though, Eileen’s hair isn’t nearly as “oily” as her son’s is, so perhaps she was a carrier for the gene or it’s just not that apparent in the females of the family.
From his father Severus inherits his hooked nose, which not only seems a little too large for his face but is also a source of amusement for some of his peers. His lips are thin, and get thinner as his anger or frustration grows. The voice emitting from this teenager has completed the required change, though can become shrill when particularly angry. Severus was very pleased when this change occurred at home as opposed to at school. There is an audible drawl to his speech, which is best described as calm (nearing apathy) and slick when not provoked. If provoked it changes to a noticeably cold and uncaring snarl that is quick to lash out at the nearest thing that moves.
In terms of apparel, Severus Snape wears his school uniforms all the while at Hogwarts, no matter what the weather decides to throw at him. His muggle clothes are horribly mismatched and much too large for him, and finds himself too embarrassed to wear these lighter garments within the magical community. In fact, it’s likely to assume he left most of his muggle wear at home. One will never see this kid in public dressed in a tee shirt and shorts if he can avoid it. Arms, legs, and neck are mostly covered by loose-fitting but not excessively baggy clothes, usually in dark colors.
Personality Quirks:
Severus tends to get exasperated or angry quickly if his point just isn’t being comprehended by the audience. As a general rule he is also a bit cynical, sardonic, and surly. But, typically, his personality alters depending on whom he’s talking to. This author compares him in a very small way to Jekyll and Hyde in this respect, though the jump from one to the other is sporadic and emotional rather than due to an experimental potion of sorts. He hates being ignored when addressing someone – don’t we all? – and often when he is finally being given a brand attention he wasn’t quite anticipating it is usually thanks to the Marauders.
Snape’s home life was often unpleasant, his father being rather abusive towards wife and son alike because, according to Severus, he and Eileen had abilities Tobias doesn’t nor will ever possess. Yes, Severus Snape can be a bit antagonistic but he is also a bit timid, especially if he feels at risk of bodily harm. While he’s not suffered any lasting injury, the abuse sustained left the lad in pain long enough to complain about it. As a general rule his feelings regarding this and anything he finds upsetting is often buried deep into a spare corner at the back of his mind. He doesn’t want to give Tobias the satisfaction that the older man got to him, and any attempt to discuss the topics found on the back burner of Severus’ mind usually causes the lad to lash out angrily at the inquiring entity. He doesn’t mean to, but he often feels backed into a corner when pressed for information. Overall, Snape has this dark air about him, not unlike Muggle Goths, but if befriended can be a decent sort.
