Title: 2007 Wiles, Christine 5/2007

ELL - August 19, 2008 05:53 PM (GMT)
A search is scheduled to take place in the Ocala National Forest on Saturday, March 1 for Christine Wiles, W/F, 11-02-67. Wiles was last seen April 21, 2007 and was reported missing by her father in early May, 2007. An ongoing investigation supports the possibility of foul play in Wiles’ disappearance. DNA evidence found in the trunk of a 1995 Chrysler New Yorker, which may have been seen in the Ocala National Forest in the area of Wild Cat lake, has led detectives to conduct the search scheduled Saturday.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office hopes to bring closure to the family of Christine Wiles and possibly locate additional evidence that may aide in the investigation of her disappearance.

The search will begin in the early morning hours and will include the MCSO Mobile Command Center located at Pine Castle Bombing Range, Aviation and K-9 Units, Under Water Recovery Team (URT), as well as Lake County Sheriff’s Office K-9 and URT Units. The Florida Trail Association will also have a volunteer group assisting in the search.

A photo of Christine Wiles is attached. Anyone with information regarding her disappearance is asked to contact Crime Stoppers or Rhonda Stroup of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau at (352) 368-6845.

Marion County cold case
revisited

MARION COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - The Marion County Sheriff's Office will conduct a meeting between Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and homicide detectives to reevaluate the case of missing person Christine Wiles.

The 39-year-old woman was last seen on April 21, 2007. Her car was discovered three months later in the Ocala National Forest, with blood in the trunk.

The ICE agents are retired detectives that were part of the initial effort of several teams to reopen cold cases using federal grant money the Sheriff's Office received in September of 2007.

Those teams consisted of ICE agents, detectives, evidence and DNA technicians and drug agents. Since the expiration of the grant on May 31, 2009, the ICE agents are continuing to volunteer their time as one team to investigate Sheriffs Office cold case homicides.

During the period that grant money was utilized, ICE agents used their experience, expertise and dedication to solve a homicide and develop leads in several more.

The meeting Wednesday will be a combined effort of the Marion County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Forestry and the Medical Examiners Office to reevaluate the information regarding the disappearance of Christine Wiles.

The Sheriff's Office believes we have exhausted every resource in an effort to find Christine and hopes by reintroducing her case to the agents and assisting agencies, new information will be uncovered.

During Wednesdays meeting, media will have the opportunity to interview ICE agent and detectives regarding the cold case grant and the most recent cold case being investigated.

Anyone wishing to attend should arrive promptly at 8:45 a.m.

Ocala National Forest Searched For Missing Central Florida Woman
39-Year-Old Vanished In April

POSTED: 7:59 pm EDT August 4, 2007
UPDATED: 10:10 pm EDT August 5, 2007

MARION COUNTY, Fla. -- A search for a Marion County woman missing since April was launched Saturday in a section of the Ocala National Forest.

Christine Wiles, 39, was last seen April 21 after she missed her daughter's birthday party.

Wiles' dark-colored 1995 Chrysler New Yorker was later found abandoned at the Ocala National Forest along state Road 40.

Deputies said they found a significant amount of blood matching Wiles' DNA in the trunk of the vehicle.

Saturday, dozens of members of the Forest Service and Marion County Sheriff's Office searched for clues into Wiles' whereabouts in several acres of woods.

"Right now, we are looking for anything that will point us in the right direction," Marion County sheriff's Lt. Mark Kelly said.

The rough terrain and excessive heat made Saturday's search difficult.

"A lot of the terrain out here scrubby under brush," Forest Service worker Heather Callahan said. "It is hard to walk into."

Wiles' father, Timothy Blackburn, asked for the public's help.

"Lets find the person who did this to her," Blackburn said.

Deputies said they do not have a suspect in the case.

Anyone with information about Wiles' whereabouts is urged to call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.

Jenifer Fisher, Marion County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman, said that more than 100 law-enforcement officers, including a dive team and K-9 units, and volunteers will comb the site for Wiles' remains or evidence that might provide investigators with clues about her disappearance.

"We hope that the search brings closure to the family and provides us with evidence to further our investigation," Fisher said.

Wiles' father reported her missing after she failed to attend her daughter's 16th birthday party. On June 24, Marion authorities found a large amount of blood inside a 1995 Chrysler New Yorker owned by Christine Wiles. DNA tests later revealed the blood to be hers.

Fisher said authorities decided to search the area around Wildcat Lake because a witness reported seeing the Chrysler in the area around the time of her disappearance. The Sheriff's Office has searched the area before, but not as extensively as it will today.

Fisher declined to say where her Chrysler was found, but said that it was not at Wildcat Lake. In August, authorities searched another area of the Ocala forest near State Road 40 and Forest Road 88, but said they found nothing related to the case.

Stephen Hudak, Helen Eckinger, Jerry Fallstrom and Robert Sargent of the Sentinel staff contributed to this report.

Marion County sheriff's deputies today are expected to search a portion of the Ocala National Forest in the hopes of finding a missing 39-year-old woman who was last seen on April 21. But the news, so far, is not good. They have found her car, with blood in the trunk.

Authorities found Christine Wiles' car on July 24 in Marion County, but they are not saying where the 1995 Chrysler New Yorker was located.

A sheriff's press release simply said it "may have been seen in the area of the Ocala National Forest."

Maj. Chris Blair, bureau chief of the department's Major Crimes Unit, said Friday the amount of blood discovered was enough to do an analysis.

"We believe foul play is involved and we want to find this girl. We believe she's in the area of the Ocala National Forest and we're going to search tomorrow with K-9, air unit - whatever it takes to find her."

and

Wiles left her home in Ocala on April 9 for Texas, where she planned to visit a girlfriend and seek employment. Wiles did get a job as a waitress at Denny's Restaurant in Texas. Authorities said Wiles' parents didn't know their daughter had gone to Texas.

Wiles returned to Ocala on April 20 and saw her family the next day. She didn't say anything about being in Texas, sheriff's officials said. That was the last time her family saw her.

Approximately six weeks went by, and her parents were worried. It wasn't like her not to stay in touch, especially when so many events went by, including her daughter's 16th birthday party. Then, on June 9, after finding out from friends that his daughter may have been in Texas with her boyfriend, Wiles' father, Timothy Lane Blackburn, contacted the Sheriff's Office. The department told him to contact Texas authorities.

Texas officials listed Wiles as missing/endangered out of Nederland [TX].

Blackburn met the boyfriend only once and does not know his name, so even that meeting would seem to be of little help to authorities.

"It would be wonderful if they did [find her alive], but we don't think it's going to happen," he said. "At this point, we just want to find her and get the person who did this to her."

Blackburn plans to be at the site today.
Blackburn said he suspected something was wrong when his daughter didn't call him for Father's Day or her mother for Mother's Day.

Officials said they are putting together a timeline of her whereabouts, in addition to talking with friends, families and associates. Now, the last sighting was in Belleview on April 21.

Anyone with any information about this case, can call the Detective Rhonda Stroup at 732-9111, or Crime Stoppers at 368-STOP. A $5,000 reward is being offered. She is described as white, 5-foot-6, 160 pounds with auburn hair and blue eyes.

Investigators combed the area in Marion County searching for Wiles by foot and used dogs and a helicopter.
Witnesses said they believe they saw a car on Highway 40 matching the description of Wiles' car.
The search, police said, turned up many items but the most suspicious was an old suitcase containing a distorted driver's license of a woman.
Detectives said they will run tests on the suitcase and show it to Wiles' family to determine whether or not it's a clue in her disappearance.
"We're searching for anything that might take us to the next level in this investigation," Capt. James Pogue with the Marion County Sheriff's Office said. "That could be something as small as a button off of a shirt to actual human remains."
Detectives said more volunteers will continue searching the forest for clues.

After death of woman, father seeks closure
Ocala man believes prisoner knows what happened to his daughter.

Blackburn said before the man was sent to prison, sheriff's detectives took a belt and shoes from him and sent it to a lab to be tested.

Blackburn said the man was the last person to be seen with his daughter on April 21. They were in a 1995 Chrysler New Yorker that Blackburn believes belongs to the man's family.

The car was found in July with blood in the trunk, indicating foul play, according to sheriff's officials.

Maj. Chris Blair, head of the Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit, said the items were sent to the crime lab and that he was apparently "the last person known to have been in contact with her."

Blair would not say much about the investigation, other than to say, "We're leaving all avenues open."

What makes the man suspect in Blackburn's mind is that he is the last person known to have been seen with Christine, and in 1998, he was arrested by Ocala police detectives and charged with sexual battery, kidnapping and battery on his then-girlfriend in an especially brutal attack in the forest.

The search for a missing Nederland native has kicked into high gear now that Florida police believe foul play is involved.

As we first reported to you back in june, 39 year old Christine Wiles, a native of Southeast Texas was reported missing by her parents.

The Ocala, Florida resident had been seen recently working at a Vidor restaurant and visiting friends in the area but hadn 't been heard from since April 21st.

The case took on serious overtones on July 24th when Ocala investigators discovered blood in the trunk of a car owned by Wiles.

A dna test matched the blood to her parents and police suspected the worst for Christine.

Search teams spread out at 8 o'clock Saturday morning in the Ocala National Forest in central Florida north of Orlando.

Captain James Pogue with the Marion County Sheriff's office spoke with KBMT Channel 12 News as teams were resuming the search.

Captain Pogue is asking anyone who saw Christine wiles during her visit to Southeast Texas this spring to contact EasTex CrimeStoppers at 724 tips.

Searchers find no sign of woman

Authorities searched for 12 hours Saturday. But officials said the chances of finding 39-year-old Christine Wiles' body are slim.

"It's worse than finding a needle in a haystack," said Marion County Sheriff's Office Lt. Bill Sowder.

From about 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., officials combed through almost 10 square miles of this tri-county forest for signs of the blue-eyed, auburn-haired Belleview resident. The last time anyone recalls seeing her is April 21.

"When you're looking for a body that has been missing for three or four months," said Lt. Mark Kelly, "you're not looking for a body. You're looking for body parts."

Authorities have been looking for Wiles since June 13, when her father reported she missed her daughter's 16th birthday in Marion County. Law-enforcement officials in Nederland, Texas, where she also has a home, then contacted the Sheriff's Office.

Wiles, 39, has been missing since April 21 and her car was found July 24 along Florida state road 40 by the Ocala National Forest. A DNA test of blood found in the trunk of Wiles' 1995 Chrysler New Yorker matched Wiles, leading to Saturday's search.

Maj. Chris Blair with the office's Major Crime's Unit said foul play is suspected.

Capt. Search yields no sign of missing woman

BY AUSTIN L. MILLER
STAR-BANNER

OCALA NATIONAL FOREST - Searchers using dogs and all-terrain vehicles combed sections of the Ocala National Forest on Saturday looking for signs of an Ocala woman who has been missing for more than three months.

Led by the Marion County Sheriff's Office and its Emergency Response Team - a volunteer group - and the U.S. Forest Service, searchers carefully went over an area north of State Road 40 and south to Forest Road 597. They also checked the shooting range near FR 88 and a lake by the southeast corner of SR 40 and SR 19.

But they found no signs of 39-year-old Christine Wiles, who has been missing since April 21.

Friday, sheriff's deputies toured ridge lines from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and marked spots for the search. The spots selected were 1.5 miles north of SR 40 to FR 97 and south to FR 597.

In all, 37 searchers took part Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m.

Sheriff's Office spokesman Capt. Jimmy Pogue said the areas covered by the searchers were identified through the investigation into Wiles' disappearance. Her 1995 Chrysler New Yorker was found July 24, although investigators have not said where. Friday, though, authorities said they found blood in the trunk of the car.

Wiles' father, Timothy L. Blackburn, dressed in shorts, tennis shoes, dark glasses and a camouflage hat, was present for Saturday's search and expressed concern.

"You just never know until you go through something like this," said Blackburn, who was later joined by Sheriff Ed Dean in the Sheriff's Office Mobile Command Center for a private conference and prayer.

Searchers came across a badly burned driver's license and a piece of luggage that contained a blow dryer. Pogue said the items would be examined to determine whether they had any connection to the case. He said there is no immediate plan to continue the search.

Wiles' story began April 9 when she left Ocala bound for Texas to visit a girlfriend and get a job. Wiles worked as a waitress at a Denny's restaurant in Nederland, Texas, before returning home on April 20. The next day she visited her parents at their Ocala home, but said nothing about the time she spent in Texas. That was the last time her parents saw her.

After not hearing from Wiles for about six weeks, Blackburn became concerned. He said his daughter did not call and missed several important events, including her daughter's 16th birthday. On June 9, after friends told the family that Wiles may have gone to Texas with her boyfriend, Blackburn contacted the Sheriff's Office. The department told him to contact authorities in Texas, where they listed her as missing/endangered out of Nederland.

A few days later, Wiles' parents contacted the Sheriff's Office and told them Wiles had been seen by another family member in Belleview on April 21.

Anyone with any information about the case can call Sheriff's detective Rhonda Stroup at 732-9111, or CrimeStoppers at 368-STOP. A $5,000 reward is being offered.

Wiles is white, 5 feet 6 inches tall, 160 pounds with auburn hair and blue eyes.

Deputies Search Lakes, Land For Missing Mom
Saturday, March 01, 2008 11:42:12 PM

Search For Missing Mom
OCALA -- Nearly a year after she disappeared, sheriff's deputies continued the search Saturday for a missing mother.

Christine Wiles, 39, was last seen in April. Authorities think her remains could be in the Ocala National Forest.

Deputies from the Marion and Lake County Sheriff's Offices searched two lakes and 25 square miles of land.

This is the last expansive search for Wiles in this area. Authorities said they have good reason to believe they'll find Wiles here.

Last July, detectives discovered a 1995 Chrysler New Yorker in the forest. They found blood inside the trunk, which they believe could be linked to Wiles.

"It’s hard to be optimistic as vast as the forest is. It’s such a vast area. She could be anywhere. It would be a miracle if we found her," said Connie Blackburn, Wiles’ mother.

A spokesperson for the Marion County Sheriff's Office said they will keep the investigation open.
