Title: Surprise Baby
OakRidgeRabbits - November 1, 2009 01:11 PM (GMT)
I held off on posting this for a little while because I wanted to make sure it was ok.
Last Tuesday, one of my sable point does delivered 1 baby. It's been awhile since she has had a litter, so to even have a baby...let alone a live, healthy one, wasn't really what I expected! And now, even more of a surprise, it is looking like it's a REW! :bumper: I've never had a little REW Holland before.
None of my singletons have survived before if I didn't have some babies to foster over, so this guy has me on the edge of my seat. But so far it's eating well and staying warm so I'm hoping for the best. His parents are HatTrick's Babbling Brooke and The Nature Trail's MLK. :)

Id take the baby out because it could get splay leg, just put it in a box or something and make a nest, then once a day put it with mom, let it drink and make sure its fat, they only need to drink once a day

I would only take it out if it looks like it's been eating too much. Otherwise, I'd leave it alone :)
Congrats!

I like to leave the babies with their mother, if at all possible. I feel that it is better for them to be with the mother, even if she doesn't interact with them directly more than once or twice a day. With single babies or runts or anything, I'm always tempted to take it right from the nest and "protect" it, but the truth is...the doe can take better care of it than I can, in most cases. And I've had success with just putting faith in the phrase that "Mom knows best!"
I am closely monitoring this baby, and its mom is doing absolutely fantastic with it. The baby is nice and plump, but she's not overfeeding. So far, everything is going perfectly. I'm proud of her. :)

So glad your baby is doing well - I have a singleton ND right now that is just tooooo much fun.
His Dam is a first timer and I just knew he wouldn't make it - but she's done a great job.
He was out of the box at 2 weeks old and just not happy to stay in, no matter how often I put him back.
So, I turned the box on it's side and lined the cage with hay.
He's now 3 weeks old and knows me when I walk in the room.
He loves to travel around in my shirt pocket while I'm taking care of all the other rabbits.
Never had a problem with him getting to fat as he's so busy.
But he does weigh 2 oz.
Another doe that was a first timer in August had 4 that she wanted no part of.
She would try to Stomp them when they nursed.
I kept them apart and held her in my lap on her back and attached the little suckers til they filled up and fell off, twice a day.
Even took them to Lexington, KY Dog show, friends would start laughing when they saw what was in the carrier in the tub of the Motorhome.
If she doesn't do better this time, it's her last.
Now the Singleton Brussels Griffon Puppy is another story.
I have to keep her Mother away from her as she thinks just because the Food Bar is there she has to fill up again.
Born the same day as the singleton ND but already weighs 1 lb. 3 oz.
She's just getting to the age to start walking around.
Continued Progress with your little one, Alan
