Title: Pen Pals Rabbit Food
Description: FYI

fuzzibutts - November 1, 2010 03:03 AM (GMT)
For those of you who feed Pen Pals, I just got word from my feed dealer that has the feed delivered from a PA distributor that the feed will be going up $1.00 per bag for the 16%, $1.25 for the 18%.

I will be calling Pen Pals in the am, to find out how long the price increase will last, or if it is pernament. Also what the reason is. My feed dealer was told by his distrubatorin PA that the price increase was due to farmers having a bad/hard crop with corn, and other grains. This may be true, but Pen Pals is advertise as a no corn formula for rabbit pellets.

This seens kind of funny since the feed is listed on the Pen Pals website as 16% is $12.56; and the 18% is $12.64. The price has not gone up on the website for two years.

How much do you pay for Pen Pals 16% and 18% in your areas?

I feed all my breeds 18% we currently paid $15.25 for a 50lb bag. When I go to pick up the feed in the am the coast is $16.50 per bag. We purchase 8-10 bags a month depending on how many litters.

So I may be changing brands/feeds in the future.

Corn is a price determining crop, even if you don't have it in your feed, the price of everything still increases.

Our cattle feed just tripled, we buy 10T at a time, so I don't mind when rabbit feed goes up a dollar. I'm paying $17 for Purina, but thats okay to me.

I don't even know if we have Pen Pals in our area , where are you from?

I am paying $13.95 for 16% and $14.95 For 18%

I guess I get PenPals quite cheap. I pay $12 for a 50lb bag of 16% and $12.50 for a 50lb bag of 18%. I'll still stay with it even if it goes up a $1. Definitely worth it for me ;).

And, Lana, I think PenPals is mainly a midwest feed. I don't think the coasts have it.

This is what I pay for mine as well, although I have to go 50 miles just to get it...but it is so worth it! I don't mind paying the extra 1.00 per bag. They are so worth it! :)

I am in Delaware.

I went to Tractor Supply the other day to compare rabbit food prices. The most expensive rabbit food they had was Purina Show for $13.95 a bag.

I love Pen Pals! We have been using it for years! We tried our "meat breed" on the cheap food from Tractor Supply there brand one year, and the condition of the "meat breed" was terrible. After 2 months on the cheap stuff switched them over to the Pen Pals 18% and the condition, flesh, and fur were superb.

I know if I ordered Herinold Feeds out of Kouts, IN, I would be paying up to $18.00 for a bag of there Wool Blend Feed (For Angoras).

Like I said I will be calling the company to find out why ordering feed is so much cheaper thur them, vs my feed dealer and his distrubotor. I know on Pen Pals website I can only order up to 150lbs at one time.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

This is exactly what we pay for Purina from TSC on the West coast. I've used it for years but have to say that I talked a great deal with the Pen Pals rep at Convention in KY and was impressed. I would have liked to try it if there was a distributor on this coast but there is not. The company will not send any out here unless we, as exhibitors, can guarantee we'll buy a certain amount each month. It's just not feasible $$ wise for them to ship it out here otherwise. So, it's not going to happen anytime soon.

Once I got a hold of the company, and explained to them what was going on. They were very willing to work with me! They said they do not use corn in there rabbit food, which I knew. They could not understand why someone would jack the price up as much as it was.

They called my feed dealer to find out who his distributor was. Comes to find out the place in PA, has some new employees who "over heard" animal feed was going to be going up in price X amount."

So when my feed dealer got the our total, he went by what the distributor in PA said.

So Pen Pals gave us our original price of $15.25 a bag plus coups in the mail for a few free bags.

The price on the website is $12.64 for 18% for people who only buy small amounts of feed at a time.

SO I am glad I asked questions and found out waht was going on! I saved some money!
