Where Is Everybody? – Trent Fleury

It’s Sunday morning and I wake up to a cloudy day, slipping out of bed, preparing to start my day
I look out my window to see my part of the streets empty, which is unusual, but I was still waking up
I get dressed and walk outside and look up and down my avenue and see nobody and I can hear no one
Maybe it’s a big church day I thought, but I walked a bit more and still nothing, no one coming my way

I begin to sprint lightly to the center of my town and stores and cars are empty, but for what reason?
Restaurants are deserted with no smell of food and again, no signs of life as I walk on our shopping block
I begin to worry heavily as the skies grow a tad darker as I see emptiness expand all through my town
What has happened here and why am I the only one here? What epidemic has caused all of life to stop?

I sprint to our main cathedral and no one is present, just empty with a great sense of eerie silence
I look in the church pews and people’s items are about, from purses, to suit coats, and torn hymn books
I run back out of the cathedral and am breathing heavily in panic, screaming ‘can anybody hear me?!?’
I cannot figure out what’s going on here, was there an attack, a slow infection, what act of violence?

I run to the beginning of our town, where cars usually pass through to look for anyone else to be around
Still, I see nobody as the skies grow darker now, but no rain of thunder as my heart is on a good race
Everything is quiet, but I hear a slight rumble in the clouds as the threatening skies stir in a bizarre way
What’s going on here? Where is everybody? Why am I still alive as the rest of life has its head down?
