Lockheed-Martin¹s Waterton Canyon plant in southwest Denver, which builds spy satellites and Titan-4 rockets; Peterson Air Force Base, the headquarters of the Space Command; and the aging North American Aerospace Defense Command inside Cheyenne Mountain west of Colorado Springs. Another Air National Guard base outside Greeley, Colorado, is receiving many mobile satellite reconnaissance troops formerly housed at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, part of a mission to make the Colorado Front Range a center of excellence for technical intelligence."9

Merritt Ruddock was not the only member of the family with CIA and Nazi ties. Ms Kimball¹s father, according to a note found in the Belinda Schultz file, "Colonel Kimball of Chattanooga, Tennessee, had been a prime mover in the grown of the Post-WWI Ku Klux Klan." (The repetitious links to nazism in the testimony of Nicholas Schultz, a 7-year-old boy, recalls his mother's statement that Paul Schultz is a "white supremacist," and is obviously among friends.)

She bonded with her castle and its environs, re-christened Cherokee Ranch, and lived like a European monarch. A tour guide told an AP reporter, "the house has a number of Portuguese tile murals and many examples of parquetry (an artistic inlaid wood design done on furniture). As she describes the lavish contents of several china cabinets, words like Dresden, Spode, Meissen and Waterford slip into the conversations. That bed was built for Charles II, and he actually slept in it. This inlaid cabinet came from the court of Spain, and the pictures represent Aesop¹s fables. The libraries are full of first editions, some quite old and valuable. Well, with names like Dickens and Thackeray on the bindings, one would think so."10

Tweet Kimball died in 1999. She had been an active Republican. Kimball served on the Douglas County Planning Commission and the commissioners¹ Water Advisory Board, as well as the board of the Douglas County Educational Foundation. She also spent 14 years on the board of the Denver Art Museum as accessions chairman. She was the local matriarch of local Republican party politics and frequently played hostess to the Douglas County Republican caucus.11 "Kimball's castle and ranchland provided an extravagant vehicle for her varied pursuits," the local County News-Press noted in her obituary last January, "wildlife conservation, a vast, eclectic art collection, politics, innovative ranching, royal relationships and storied social events."12

CHEROKEE CASTLE



Cherokee Castle was built between 1924 and 1926 by Denver Real estate tycoon Charles Alfred Johnson and his wife, Alice. The Johnson’s hired Merrill and Burnham Hoyt, well known Denver architects, to design the house. Originally the house was planned to be very modest, but one thing led to another, and by the time the design was complete, the building contained 26 rooms, and sprawled to 10,000 square feet.
The Johnson’s owned the house for 30 years, but by the early 1950’s Mrs. Johnson had died, Charles Johnson was in a nursing home in California, and their sons Charles and Gifford had also moved to California, using the house only in the summer. It was still heated by coal, and in need of a new furnace and other upgrades, so they decided to sell. The home was perfect for Tweet Kimball, who was looking for a large home to display her extensive collections of art and furniture.

Tweet Kimball bought the Castle in 1954, and also bought the adjoining land, which had been in the Blunt family since the homestead act of the 1860’s. That land included Blunt Mountain, which Tweet renamed Cherokee Mountain. She then renamed the ranch “Cherokee Ranch,” and lived here for 45 years, until her death in 1999. She was well known in the community for her lavish parties, and entertainment of distinguished people from all over the world.

In 1996, Mrs. Kimball established a private foundation, Cherokee Ranch and Castle Foundation, and donated the castle, her art and furniture collections, cattle operation and the land to the Foundation. Mrs. Kimball acted as president of the Board of Directors while she was living, and continued to live here in the castle. Since Tweet died in 1999, the Board of Directors and staff have run the foundation.

I'm curious as to which news site listed this ritual. Perhaps you can direct me to the site. I wasn't able to find it from normal searches. But I'm wondering if this recent fatal crash had anything to do with this 'ritual'? The crash happened south of Cherokee Ranch on Rt. 85.

http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/colu...260_212,00.html It's no surprise that Historic Denver Inc.'s recent "Swanky Summer Bash" fund-raiser at the renovated Cherokee Ranch & Castle, in Sedalia, attracted an eclectic group of more than 100 sophisticated supporters.

After all, the organization works to preserve a broad mix of Denver's treasures: its historic fabric, its distinctive architecture and its cultural landscapes, which are tangible reflections of the city's heritage and the foundation for Colorado's quality of life.

While guests arrived at the ranch and castle high above Sedalia, a herd of elk roamed in the pasture below.

The five-story castle features a timbered great hall lighted by a chandelier dating from 1680, a musicians balcony, eight fireplaces, 16th century moldings, a library, turrets, gargoyles and early 20th century arts and crafts iron and ceramic work. Its architectural splendor and exceptional natural surroundings make this historic landmark extraordinary.

Even a yearling mule deer was curious about the castle, hobbling on the heels of some guests walking up the castle's steps to attend the soiree.

"Looks like we have an unexpected visitor," said Kerri Atter, director of Historic Denver's Molly Brown House Museum, who was welcoming guests with the museum's curator of collections, Monica Dean.

It turns out the orphaned animal had been bottle-fed by the Cherokee Ranch & Castle's staff and has taken up residence on the grounds.

Another of the property's stellar features is a circular staircase leading to a patio at the top of the castle, overlooking the ranch and surrounding land.

From the patio, Historic Denver President Kathleen Brooker; event co-chairman, sponsor and former trustee Cal Cleworth from Cleworth Associates and his wife, Sheila; and co-chairwoman Kathy Kaley from Colorado Business Bank witnessed a spectacular sunset and a sweeping view of the Front Range.

Also enjoying the sunset and view were trustee and event sponsor Don Bailey from Triton Properties; sponsors Sandra and Jerry Glick; Historic Denver board Chairman Mike West and his wife, Etta, and committee members Hayden Hirschfeld and Chris Murata. The castle dates back to 1924 when Charles Alfred Johnson, a wealthy insurance executive from Boston, commissioned renowned Denver architect Burnham Hoyt to build the 11,000-square-foot Scottish-style stone castle on a bluff overlooking Cherokee Ranch.

Hoyt, one of Denver's most significant 20th century architects, also designed Red Rocks Amphitheater and the original Denver Public Library.

In 1954, local rancher Tweet Kimball bought adjoining ranch properties, including the castle. In 1996, three years before her death, she donated 3,000 acres of ranchland, the castle, its art and antiques to the Cherokee Ranch & Castle Foundation.

Guests were entertained by Scottish bagpipers and the Rough Riders, a 1920s and '30s jazz band. Syd Sexton from Alex Brooks Fine Catering presented the evening's fare.

Historic Denver supporters at the affair included sponsors Annette DeYoung and Scott Magnuson from Gelfond Hochstadt Pangburn P.C.; Agnes Ryan and Michael Tapp from Northern Trust Bank; and Joe Poli from Humphries Poli Architects with his wife, Maureen.
