"Ask a Scientist" category, LOL ask any obscure biology/zoology/plain science question you've ever wondered about, and I, Anne-Marie, the resident biologist, will answer and explain and maybe even post all of them in my science blog, because I am a closet nerd and I live for that stuff and I like talking to y'all about anything, so if I can talk to y'all about that stuff, it's the best of both worlds and keeps me more accountable for logging in and posting. ;)

Ok girls, no bickering, I will answer those three questions on this thread since I technically asked them myself, all other inquiries should be directed to my home in the "Ask a Scientist" forum so graciously given to me by our beloved benevolent webmaster. ;)

1. Hot water freezes faster than cold water:
This is because water is never completely pure H2O, it always contains some dissolved gases, minerals, etc. These things cause "freezing point depression", which is a term from chemistry which means it makes something require a lower temperature to freeze, for example at 25 or 30 F instead of 32. When water is heated, however, those impure substances contaminating it are dissolved or evaporated, leaving purer water with no freezing point depression effect, and thus hot water can freeze faster than cold water.

2. Duck penis length:
The Argentine lake duck can have a penis up to 42.5 cm (16.7 inches) long.
Wait, if it's more than twelve inches, doesn't that make a foot, not a penis? Hyuk hyuk hyuk now back to the show.
It has the longest penis relative to body size of any vertebrate (its length is roughly equivalent to its entire body, and the whole bird only weighs about one pound), and it is also slightly spiraled and has a bristled tip. No, I am not joking:



3. What component of a Big Mac is toxic to rhinos?
Onions. They contain thiosulfate, which causes hemolytic anemia especially in rhinos but also iin some other livestock (and even dogs and cats if they have it in large quantities). "Hemo" means blood, "lytic" refers to cells bursting, so this means that it causes the animal's blood cells to self-destruct, resulting in anemia, which is a lack of red blood cells resulting in weakness and ultimately death because the RBCs are what carry oxygen to vital organs.

i love having philosopical discussions and debates and I'm sure I'm not the only one. I think it would great to have a place to talk about world issues and seeing how we are all from different parts of the world it would be cool if we also had a "in the news bullentin". We could all post about big things that are going on in the places we live tand how we feel about it that way we learn about eachother and what's going on in the world we live in. I already have a topic for the debate one. So if you want then you could turn around and ask me for other ideas. I love you Stephie....pretty please.
