Intellivision spokesman George Plimpton didn't make a lot of friends in the video game industry. Atari fanboys hated him for challenging their favorite company's dominance of the video game industry and calling the abilities of the 2600 into question. Author Craig Kubey expressed his disdain for Mattel's Brit-for-hire by calling him "the best preppie money can buy." Now, YouTube has revealed that even the Blue Sky Rangers- the heart and soul of the Intellivision- couldn't stand the guy!
A submission on the popular video sharing site depicts George Plimpton as a pompous Intellivision character with limp wrists and a snooty British accent. Halfway into the video, the pixelized Plimpton demonstrates "the most amazing visual effect ever... the total destruction of an old fart!" After the screen fills with the scattered pieces of Plimpton's head, the producers of the video hit the rewind button and show the explosion a second time for full carthartic effect. The Blue Sky Rangers even poke fun at themselves, having George proclaim, "We have the best graphics of any video game system... no gameplay, but great graphics!"
Indeed, the visuals in this brief clip are pretty good for 1979 technology. That caricature could just as easily be Don Knotts, but one can only imagine how Plimpton would have looked on the Atari 2600!
