It's an alright anime, but for me it didn't exactly live up to its hype.

Then again, I watched it with high standards. I watched ir because someone was all "You liked Elfen Lied, Enzai and Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni?! You should watch Death Note then, it's just as intense!" And I was disappointed in the anime.

The Good:

I'll have to say that Light is a pretty believable character. He starts out seemingly innocent, but then he works his way up to becoming corrupted with the power of the Death Note. L is an okay character, didn't really do anything for me but he's at least believable. Misa isn't as horrible as rabid fangirls make her out to be (If I had a penny for every fangirl that went all "MISA IS ANNOYING!" then I'd be a billionaire) in fact, I liked her. Sure, she was a bit of a ditz and she was clueless to what Light had in mind but that's what made her also realistic. True, lots of anime girls are ditzy but I don't think any of them pull it off like Misa.

Also, the animation is pretty nice. I personally love the style of the anime and the character designs, they're inspiring.

Now then, the story is pretty refreshing for the anime genre. There is no big-ass swords, girls with boobs that defy gravity, weird hair or any of that crap you see in a lot of anime.

The Bad:

Good realistic characters, an interesting story and nice animation, nothing could go wrong, right? The complaint I have is simply put: how did an anime with such a good start have such a downfall as it did? Up until episode 18, it was a pretty good watch. After episode 20, I swear to god it seemed as though a new team of writers came in to relace the ones who made the story good. As in, there became too many plotholes every minute and the characters were just becoming stupidier by the second. I was at the point of wondering if I should fast foreward or not.

Would I suggest this anime to someone new to darker anime: Of course! It'd be a good start for someone to watch something other than Naruto or Bleach.
