Kettlethorpe 24 Crofton Cougars 26
The Cougars made it two wins from two in an action packed afternoon of rugby at local rivals Kettlethorpe. A mistake from the kick off put Crofton straight on the attack and after missing two clear cut chances then Cooper having a try disallowed a flowing move involving Garside and Holt sent Chris Storey away for a try under the sticks. The hosts responded well, driving the ball in hard and putting the Crofton defence under strain and broke through with two converted tries on 20 and 25 minutes. With both sides giving 110% temperatures began to fray and a brief bust up resulted in both sides having a man dismissed so Crofton made changes from the bench and this had the desired effect as Brierley and Greensit made yards deep in kettlethorpes half and Pete Storey took full advantage to sneak over from close range.Five minutes before the break Crofton tied the scores at 12 all with a penalty but couldnt hold out till the break as the hosts spotted a big hole in Croftons defence to score a converted try.
With Kettlethorpe looking to extend their advantage the Cougars were forced into a 10 minute spell of defence but after weathering the storm they hit back as Hutchinson made a half break and he found Woodcock in support who went over. The visitors joy was shortlived though as Kettlethope charged forward and again found a big gap in Croftons line to cross for a converted try and lead 24-16.Another skirmish saw a home player given 10 minutes to cool off and this set up a grandstand finish as Crofton went for the win,a mix up from a Kettlethorpe scrum saw Crofton Scrum Half Lamming pick up the loose ball and dart over from close range, shortly after Brown and Tinsley forced an error on the hosts 25 and with a quick play the ball Pete Storey fought his way over by the posts to edge Crofton into the lead. The game then ended in controversy as with 8 minutes remaining a Kettlethorpe high tackle led to a skirmish between several players and with spectators encroching onto the pitch the referee had not alternative to blow up early.Man of the match for Crofton was Sean Breirley with Morley and Holt also in contention.
