Rock out with the DoodlebopsUrsula Watson / The Detroit News
Only someone with a preschooler around would know what a Doodlebop is. For those who don't, the Doodlebops are what's hot in the world of children's entertainment.
They're a colorful trio of siblings named Deedee, Rooney and Moe Doodle who rock out, singing hip, high-energy songs that get kids moving and grooving.
They speak to the joy and even angst of preschoolers with such songs as "Let's Get Loud," where Moe Doodle sings, "They ask me to be really quiet/I can hardly stand it/When I get that feeling/I need to get me reeling/ I need to get loud."
The Doodlebops have a hit show on the Disney Channel's Playhouse Disney, and the singing siblings are on their own music tour, which rolls into The Palace of Auburn Hills on Sunday.
Chad McNamara (Rooney Doodle) plays the bright blue guitarist of the group. Born in Ottawa, Ontario, McNamara has appeared on TV and toured Canada as a cast member in the musical "Mamma Mia!" But the toughest audiences, says the seasoned performer, are children.
"They love you one second and can hate you the next," McNamara says. "Children are so innocent. They are looking at you for leadership or advice. It can really be difficult but it is so much fun."
What sets the Doodlebops apart from the long list of children-centric forms of musical entertainment is the group's interaction with their young audiences, who they never talk down to, McNamara says.
He says the group makes each performance memorable.
"We are dancing, singing. This is a real rock show," he says. "So many adults can remember their first concert. We want children to have that experience at a younger age and be able to say 'My first concert was the Doodlebops.' "
