Title: Duplicate Topics...
Description: Please Read

Letters (TPFKA WWTL@WHL) - September 1, 2006 08:12 AM (GMT)
Just a quick note to follow up something which was queried in the Help Zone.

We don't really have the time or the inclination to merge topics which are about the same subject so if you're thinking about starting a new topic could you please just have a quick check first to see if there's already a topic about the thing you want to talk about.

If there isn't then feel free to start one, if there is then it's probably best to just reply to the existing thread rather than starting a duplicate.

Thanks.

The Emirates Gallastico - September 1, 2006 08:18 AM (GMT)
Agreed... i think the problem is people checking websites at the same time, coming back and seeing theres no topic... and suddenly three topics about the same thing open in three different places

Well it makes things easier if people use the right section for each post. Then it is much easier to see whether there is a topic already on this and easier to manage if there are duplicates on the same section. People just need to use their common sense

Oi, mush mods, why don't you stop people's ability to post new threads, then you could ask posters to suggest threads by PM and the Mods couold then put them up? It's an off the wall idea but it might just work...

that's funny.
:haha: :haha: :haha:
it is a joke, I assume, since it would seriously dampen the exchange?

Also for Transfer Rumours, though this won't matter for the next few months, maybe have ONE thread per linked player, his name in the title, and everything on that link goes there until it happens or doesn't...makes it so much easier when we have news on a player, to know where to look, and to know where to post!

Captain Malcolm Reynolds™ - September 3, 2006 02:51 AM (GMT)
If people want to reply to a seperate thread which is about something that is already being discussed, surely that's up to them

I mean, if it's of no interest, no one will reply and it will fall off the page, no harm, no foul.

However, if people do reply, to both, surely the obvious argument is that the users are merely getting what they want.

For example. If you start a thread about one thing and you're talking complete nonsense, in my opinion, should there really be any onus on me to discuss why i think you're talking nonsense? Or should i be able to start a thread with a different insight and discuss it with people who think along the same lines?

Im going with the latter.

Letters (TPFKA WWTL@WHL) - September 3, 2006 07:37 AM (GMT)
I think we're just trying to encourage people not to start 15 threads all saying

"Do you think Cole will go?"

or

"Isn't Cole a money-grabbing prat?"

and so on. Which is sort of what happened on transfer deadline day.

And in the months building up to deadline day! Ok maybe not 15..

But yeah, exactly...

whilst we are on the subject what's with not allowing swear words or the daffodil smily? have we become politically correct? thats the start of the slippery slope that messed up 606 you know.

fair enough if somebody poists something obnoxiously racist or clearing lacking in taste censor it but the use of common swear words???

like this smily which will appear as a cross :daffodil: & my having to type fcuk to avoid the spelling censor!!

McNamara That Ghost... - September 5, 2006 08:52 AM (GMT)
Some of the words have come back into fruition....as for what they are...you will have to find out....

:D

Spiggsy - September 11, 2006 05:25 PM (GMT)
It's no big deal. You always have duplicate threads on forums, usually everyone hits one up for the most part and the secondary threads end up with a different spin on the same subject. With big issues like the Cole Saga, the Reyes sage, and constantly failing to lose a game, you can't help but have duplicate threads. Sometimes they are about different topics, but come across as the same thing.

These things always sort themselves out.

I like the idea for the transfer rumours though, just post the target's name and everything can go in one thread.

CescFabregas4 - September 13, 2006 10:32 PM (GMT)
Two things would definitely help.

1) Transfer rumours, as suggested, the player name and all updates in that thread.

2) Match threads be used to follow a match, rather than a thread being started for every incident of the game!

And a possible third:

3) Newspaper articles and match reports put in News & Media Section, but I guess this one can get confusing coz injury news and wenger comments could easily belong in Arsenal Debate.

But certainly the first two.

The Emirates Gallastico - September 23, 2006 04:47 PM (GMT)
I think the match thread should be used for everything related to the match... too often we have threads like "TH was off form" or "eboue had no width" or "hleb needs to get his game together"

FFS!

There is a problem here though. You are assuming that threads stay faithful to the original post but in fact they veer off topic. So, for instance, if someone does a thread about gay postings on GW, then if someone on another thread veers off onto a tangent about Cole being a screaming bender or whatever, should the threads then be merged? ;)

Coca Kolo - February 22, 2007 09:59 PM (GMT)
duplicate topics will always arise but with a different spin on the topic.

I can't work out if you're taking the piss or being serious.
Assuming the latter (probably wrongly!)...
Well you're right of course. It's never going to be perfect and people will probably start similar topics. Or topics will veer into other areas which are already covered by other existing threads.

This was just a general plea for people to have a quick check before posting a new thread in case there was already one about the subject they wanted to talk about. If I think Henry is a crap captain and I want to start a topic about that then it might be better if I check to see if there is already one. That's all. We're not exactly strict about it.

For clarification, there arent enough members to have an issue with multiple threads or threads in the wrong section.

Any idea that there is just arrogance on 'your' part.

It stiffles conversation, exposition and debate. For a forum as intimate and friendly as this, i have no idea why you do it.
