Shite signing, hasn't even scored yet..

-=!Jane!=- - February 19, 2007 05:01 PM (GMT)
He has scored. He has scored 3 goals this season. He is a great signing. So don't judge.

Fran is a good kid. I should know.

=P

And thanks, Cripps for posting this. It was ever so kind of you.

definitly Nice to hear he has settled in england, and is enjoying his football. Jopefully he will make a break through into the first in the next couple of seasons, by all accounts he is good enough.

Spanish midfielder Fran Merida is hoping his performances at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup will impress Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger enough to give him some first team experience in the Premier Leauge.

The 19-year-old has helped Spain's under-20 side to the top of Group B thanks to three goals in three games.

"I am focused on the World Cup and when I come back and I will give my best to show him [Wenger] what I can do, and to show him I can help the team. Of course, playing well for the national team helps" Merida told Associated Press.

Merida is hoping to follow in the footsteps of other great left-footed players Lionel Messi and Michael Owen who both impressed in the youth tournament in their primitive years.

"I always want to improve, to get better, to get my place in the Arsenal side," Merida said.

"Obviously playing with top, top players is nice, and Cesc [Fabregas] is one of them. I would love to make the first eleven at Arsenal, and that Cesc is there as well."

Merida has made one appearance for Arsenal in the Premier League this season after coming off the bench in Arsenal's second match of the season against Portsmouth - and has been largely consigned to playing in the League Cup with Arsenal's other fruiting stars.

Everytime I see him play, he's pretty average...I don't think he'll make it at Arsenal or any other decent british club

next please

Der_Kaiser - October 3, 2009 07:56 PM (GMT)
Still pissed off Spain wouldn't commit to either side in WWII?

Grebbo - October 3, 2009 08:10 PM (GMT)
Been with us for a long time now and not even close to making our bench.

Think we'll sell him soon. We've got loads of players like him but better.

Ach - October 3, 2009 08:12 PM (GMT)
Hes only 19.

Syn - October 3, 2009 08:13 PM (GMT)
There are players, that he's competing with, that are younger and better than him.

Along with Vela, this guy won't hang about for much longer. Don't think he's got much of a chance of getting into the team.

Grebbo - October 3, 2009 08:22 PM (GMT)
I don't think Wenger will let Vela go, he has too much potential.

As said, there are younger players who are better than Merida so I can see him leaving soon.

Jens' Face - October 3, 2009 10:48 PM (GMT)
Who's younger and better than Merida?

Ramsey, I can think of (he is younger, yeah?) but no one else.

Don't say Wilshere, 'cause he's one of the attacking three, while Merida's one of the midfield three.

Syn - October 3, 2009 10:54 PM (GMT)
Wilshere.

Yeah well, yknow, Cesc, Denilson and Nasri are young. Even if one of them (Cesc) legs it, two of them sticks around, Ramsey's there, and Merida's not getting his chance.

I'd like to see him play more often but unless he Baptistas Liverhoof, he won't get close to getting any league mins.

He is much better than Ramsey is.. ramsey is ahead due to his passport not football tbh. Much more versatile as well, can play CM, LW or behind the striker. :coffee:

Arshavinslittlelegs - October 4, 2009 02:24 AM (GMT)
Merida is better than Ramsey. Better than every other cm younger than him at our club. He'll be better than Cesc.

JackTheLad19 - October 4, 2009 10:11 AM (GMT)
Strange...I think Ramsey's shown more than Merida in their first team outings, Fran looks decent but his emirates cup where he played a couple of good passes was overhyped. Not seen much to convince me he's ahead of Ramsey, probably nipped ahead of Randall though.

Darth Vela - October 4, 2009 11:40 AM (GMT)
I agree, Ramsey's really impressed me, he uses the ball so well and doesn't seem to back down from the defensive work.

Merida's good, looks like a more tricky kinda guy, I think if he ge's a shot it'll be out wide though, too many good young CMs.

Atletico de Madrid are monitoring Fran Merida's situation at Arsenal and may make a bid to sign him if he does not accept the Premier League club's offer of a new deal, according to a report.

The 19-year-old midfielder has not progressed as quickly as some expected with the Gunners, but manager Arsene Wenger stil believes that he can become a first-team regular.

Having made only a handful of first-team appearances for Arsenal however, Merida, who has been starring for the U-20 side at the World Cup, may not share the Frenchman's belief and could be tempted by a return to La Liga.

With the Spain Under-21 playmaker's contract due to run out at the end of the season, Atletico are prepared to offer him more guarantees than he has been given at the Emirates, The People stated.

It is that which could see the former Barca youth team starlet opt to end his stay in north London and head to the Vicente Calderon to continue his progress.

A five-year deal is on the table and Arsenal rejected several loan offers for Merida last summer as Wenger looked to keep him under is wing.

Thats what everyone said upteen years ago when we first signed him and everytime he's been given a chance in the first team he looks very very average. He then tries to redeem himself by making the easy things look complicated with needless tricks and flicks. He just seems all glitter to me and we got more than enough of that already.

I def think Wilshere and Ramsey with their mature displays have earned the right to stay ahead of him and wouldn't mind if we sold him as he'd still have the young and formidable trio to get past (Cesc, Nasri, Den).

Ach - October 5, 2009 12:15 AM (GMT)
Liked the look of this kid from when we first got him.

Hasnt developed as quickly as we'd have liked but not every player can be a Cesc and play week in and out.

Lets see how he does in the CC before calling for his head or pushing him in to the first team

Awful player

I'd say that we seem to be becoming spoilt for choice in terms of young midfielder's! and they are gaining more and more experience!

Can't say who is better but Ramsey does seem to be the one on the subs bench more than the others, although I don't see him being any better the Merida, who I am very glad is staying around! and not going out on loan!

:goodpost:

Cesc was a freakish one off in that generally midfielders are late developers. Merida, over the last year or so has stepped up.

I've watched him closely in the U-20s world cup and hes been the best player for the Spanish team also for the reserves before he went off to Egypt he was fantastic. Hes got a good touch, eye for a pass which he can dispatch with accuracy, he can run at players and has a great shot. I'm pretty confident he'll make it here and excel.

Although, I have to say I'm liking the look of Ramsey this season. I'm just happy we have such talent in our club...bodes well for the future.

Jens' Face - October 5, 2009 10:39 PM (GMT)
He got taken off against Italy today. Spain lost 1-3. :(

RVP Left Foot - October 6, 2009 08:39 AM (GMT)
So he will be fit and ready to take on L'Pool in the CC, good

Arsenal teenager Fran Merida has revealed he is "pleased" to hear that Atletico Madrid have expressed an interest in him.

The highly rated 19-year-old remains on the fringes at the Emirates and he has admitted that whilst he has a contract with the club until 2010, he is unsure where his future lies.

"Atletico are one of the best clubs in Spain and a Champions League club and I am really pleased by the interest in me," the teenager is quoted as saying by AS.

"This is news to make me content but I have a deal signed with Arsenal until June 2010 and I still have not decided my future."

The Spaniard also revealed that he had yet to sign a long term deal with Arsenal and that he wanted to discuss the situation with the club before making any decision.

"I have not accepted the offer from Arsenal for five more seasons but this does not change things. I want to study the situation calmly and decide what is best," he added.

The player’s agent, Joseba Diaz, also suggested that Atletico were not the only club interested in Merida and hinted that the player was in demand.

"Many clubs have called me about this subject but we want to speak with Arsenal and then decide," Diaz said.

Certainly Merida does not lack experience playing in Spain as he began his career with Barcelona and also spent four months on loan with Real Sociedad last year.

Whatever - October 11, 2009 10:30 AM (GMT)
fishing for a better contract, eh?

Would hate him to let him go on a bosman, but couldn't care less about him..as I stated earlier, the chances of making it here are non-existent really

Bunk Moreland - October 12, 2009 11:25 PM (GMT)

ARSENE WENGER is determined to fight off Atletico Madrid and Seville who are eyeing young Spanish star Fran Merida.

Merida, 19 - billed as the next Cesc Fabregas - has been limited to three Carling Cup games for Arsenal.

But boss Wenger wants to give the teenager a five-year deal.

Gooner in Nipon - October 13, 2009 08:17 AM (GMT)
read the Athletico story on Sky!

tbh can't see him going anywhere, seems to want to stay, just repaying the compliment to a club showing interest in him!

said on other threads, would like to see more of this guy!

Arsenal's quest to tempt Fran Merida into penning a new deal received another blow after it was revealed that Sevilla have joined his list of admirers, according to a report.

The Catalan midfielder's contract at the Emirates runs out at the end of the current campaign and he has already been linked with a move back to La Liga.

Merida, 19, moved to the Gunners in 2007 and was expected to be groomed as the new Cesc Fabregas, but his progress has not been as rapid or as impressive.

Schooled by Barcelona there is not the same clamour from the European champions to return to them as there is for Fabregas although a return to Spanish football could be on the cards, El Mundo Deportivo state.

Sevilla's sporting director Monchi, who is hailed as the architect of the club's rise to prominence, has sent scouts to watch the Spain Under-20 playmaker in action.

Atletico Madrid have also been linked with Merida and with him being able to consider all offers in January, Arsenal will have to put more than a bit-part role on the table to keep him.
