I watched the 1973 FA Cup live on TV (In those days, the FA Cup was pretty well the only live footy you got). After he'd scored the last quarter of an hour of that game was the most gripping I can remember. Leeds United at that time where regarded as manu are today, Sunderland were the second division underdogs.

How the ball did not go in the net for Leeds in that last spell beats me. There was an amazing double save by the keeper and shots hitting the bar or getting blocked in the last inches before the goal line. You almost cried when they won it, partly from hatred of Leeds but more because of watching some underdogs pull off a great vitory against the odds.

His goal produced one of the biggest upsets ever in football.

The image of Bob Stokoe running on wearing his trilby with his arms open wide to give keeper Jim Montgomery a hug is still etched in my mind. Didn't see the game live on TV unfortunately, I'd got a ticket for the Sevens at Twickenham, but the Twickers PA kept us up to date with what was happening and we couldn't believe it when Sunderland went ahead, still less that they were able to hang on and win. There was a big cheer - even then everyone hated Leeds.
