Title: NHL Sweeps
Description: GW's Number 1 North American Sweeps!

Gary the Gooner - September 29, 2007 11:13 AM (GMT)
Here is the result of the draw - let battle commence. I will provide regular updates and information on your team.

If you have any questions I and I am sure other Canadians will be happy to answer them. The NHL also do a free daily highlights show on NHL.com. I'll post the link when it starts.

14. Letters - 26. St Louis Blues (22nd)

And that concludes the draw.

Check here for the power rankings. I don't agree with a lot of this and think Scott Morrison can be a bit of a cock - but there you go.

Unsurprisingly the Ducks are ranked number 1. This time last year the Hurricanes were ranked number 1 and they didn't make the play-offs.

Buffalo, eh? Hmm not my first choice but they will do.

First place in the League last year and still contenders this year.

Yeah that means they've had their glory and now I am here to spoil it for them. <_<

more Americans watched the Gold Cup final (soccer: US v Mexico) than the Stanley Cup deciding game last year. :good:

(in other words ... "North America's #1 sweeps" my ass. :sulk:)

It wasn't a game 7.

Having said that American will only watch if there are big teams in the Final which Ottawa and Anaheim are not.

Which is why Bettman should stop frelling off hockey's core markets and put teams there rather than in Buttfuck USA.

Tuman - September 29, 2007 05:27 PM (GMT)
So, Devils first game for the 2004 Stanley Cup Champions, the mighty Tampa Bay Lightning. Vincent Lecavalier seems to be our leading light, 52 'G's last season, I am gonna assume that is goals and that he will sweep all before him.

Tuman - September 29, 2007 05:46 PM (GMT)
Also, what the hell is a sniper? Read a few references to them now, seems kind of unfair to have a trained killer out there...

Seriously though, I guess it is some kind of shooting specialist?

Jens' Face - September 29, 2007 08:01 PM (GMT)
Tuman, you are doing a fantastic job so far. :good:

Toure de Emirates - September 29, 2007 08:59 PM (GMT)
Ice Hockey's a great sport. I'd love to watch it, but i don't have sky.

Gary the Gooner - September 30, 2007 08:28 PM (GMT)
Injury Time got off to a winning start as his Kings roasted Gooner do its Ducks last night at the O2 Arena.

Anaheim spent too much time in the Box and were made to pay as the Kings scored 3 Power Play goals before adding a short handed empty netter in the final seconds of the game.

Today the tables were turned and the Ducks crowned the Kings. This time it was LA's undiscipline that was to prove their undoing as Gooner do it shafted IT by the same 4-1 scoreline.

So it was honours even.

Next games are Wednesday.

you can post as many pictures of your lame not-even-really-water-fowl ducks as you want but apparently the Penguins have the hockey equivalent of Fabregas (or is it Messi?) ...

QUOTE
For a kid who can't legally buy a beer in Pittburgh, Sidney Crosby (he won't be 21 until next August!) has done pretty well for himself in the NHL.

In his first season at age 18 (and 253 days), he became the youngest player in league history to reach the 100-point plateau, totaling 102. He accomplished the feat by finishing the season with a fantastic flurry, racking up 37 points in his final 23 games.

Last season at age 19, Crosby took his game to another level. Despite missing three games and playing the final 2˝ weeks with a fracture in his left foot, the Penguins pivot became the youngest player in league history to win the scoring title, totaling 120 points. More impressive, Crosby led the young Pens to their first playoff appearance since 2001.

Six weeks after a disappointing first-round postseason loss to the eventual Eastern Conference champion Senators, Penguins management decided to make Crosby the youngest captain in league history.

So, tell me about this guy, Gary. Is he gonna lead us to the promised land?

And just so the rest of you know -- we officially start kicking ass and taking names on Friday, down in Carolina. Sorry, CoR, but you'll be the first to feel the Penguin Sting. :good:

Jens' Face - October 3, 2007 01:59 PM (GMT)
check it out (just finished the article)

this kid really is Fabregas:
QUOTE
A great playmaker because of his tremendous puck skills and ability to see the ice, Crosby makes his linemates better with his passing wizardry. Still, he can beat goaltenders with a variety of shots. He won't win a fastest-shot competition, but he possesses a hard, accurate shot. A little faster and a little stronger, he has a great chance to get 40 or, perhaps, 50 goals in the coming season.

At the other end of the ice, Crosby's competitive nature makes him more of a factor than some other high-scoring centers. His two-way game, in my humble opinion, is mature beyond his age and experience level. His desire to win, which clearly overrides his desire to compile individual statistics, makes him a solid two-way player. Does he make mistakes? Sure. But his experience should help in that regard. And, in this case, a good offense is a good defense. When Crosby has the puck, the other team doesn't.

For someone so young, Crosby has shown to be a good leader. He works hard, which seems to endear him to both veterans and peers in the dressing room. As captain, we would expect that to continue. He says he's just going to be himself. That should work just fine. If the club meets any significant adversity during this season, though, his leadership abilities will be tested.

Crosby also has done a good job at handling his celebrity status. That can be a problem in a hockey dressing room, where the emphasis should be on "team" rather than the individual. Crosby hasn't let the hype interfere with his focus. It's another reason why he's earned the respect of his teammates.

:scarf: go penguins!

Touchdown!

The Emirates Gallastico - October 3, 2007 02:06 PM (GMT)

Tuman - October 3, 2007 03:09 PM (GMT)
Well, you may well have Fabregas/Messi, but the mighty Tampa Bay Lightning have the...erm..well...Fletcher.

'He was named captain, becoming the youngest captain in NHL history at 19 years and 11 months'

Then stripped of it when the Coach wanted to make an example of him over contract negotiations, ah well.

However he now holds the records for most goals and points scored for Tamp Bay Lightning, and was named MVP for Canada at the World Cup of Hockey (does anyone else play it except Canada?). So more the Henry really, rather than Fletcher.

The thing that pisses me off though is that they had an arena called the Thunderdome...but moved, what good is that?

she'd make an awesome captain -- and, you figure, is the right one to tell Fletcher that he better take the deal he's being offered ... or else.

and and and!!!

you could have "Welcome to the Terrordrome" as the team song. Oh, what a crime that they moved.

Tuman - October 4, 2007 03:05 PM (GMT)
Well, like to see anyone else care for the fans as much as the Bolts:

'All fans will receive Lightning pom-poms courtesy of Sweetbay as they enter'

Along with:

'The all new $7 million “Lightning Vision” center-hung video system, 360-degree LED boards'

And:

'High Stickin’ Chicken features an array of wings, chicken tenders, chicken Caesar salads and garlic fries'

With:

'The new-look Lightning logo represents a modernization of the team’s previous identity mark and combines it with the new RBK Edge uniforms this season to give the Lightning players a hot new look'

Also:

'Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis will look to repeat their league-leading and franchise-record breaking performances of 2006-07. Lecavalier and St. Louis came together as one of the most dynamic duos in the National Hockey League last season, posting a combined 95 goals and 210 points.'

All in all, it looks dire for the New Jersey Devils, new score board and a devastating partnership up front. Kicking off the season in style, but the St. Pete Times Forum, really doesn't match up to the 'Thunderdome' as a name.

I can't remember who has the Devils, but prepare to be swept off the ice

Gary the Gooner - October 4, 2007 07:13 PM (GMT)
Wednesday results:
Carolina 2-3 Montreal OT (1886 beats Czech out Rosicky but as its an OT loss CoR bags a point)
Detroit 3-2 Anaheim SO (Hey duckboy - you may talk tough but you are no match for my superfire hotwings - but coz it was decided on a shoot out you get a point
Toronto 3-4 Ottawa OT (Flavs shows no sympathy for the hospitalised pie muncher who gets a re-match tonight)
Colorado 4-3 Dallas (Ralpheroo72 gets his ass kicked and no points by
Gooner 23!)

Tuman - October 5, 2007 08:15 AM (GMT)
Well, as predicted Vincent Lecavalier put the Devils to the...erm...lightning bolt last night. Scoring 2 in a game that the Devils scored first in, to equalise and then put the mighty Tampa Bay ahead, finally resulting in 3-1. Martin St. Louis getting 3 assists, looks like their partnership is really paying off.

GO BOLTS
