Title: Cricket - county vs international
Description: A girls question
Red Gooner - October 2, 2007 01:47 PM (GMT)
Can someone explain the international versus county cricket thing?
Do the players in the England squad actually play for a county team? It's just that they are always playing for England - there always seems to be tests, ODIs and 2020 stuff going on - I wonder who actually pays the wages? (as if I was a county club I'd be really miffed I never saw my player!)
Sorry if it's a really silly girlie question, but I only just *get* cricket.

I don't get it either, TBH.
There seem to be world cups going on and all kind while the county season is still running.
Unless it's like the African Cup of Nations and some leagues just get on with it while the players are away, like we'll have to.

Here goes.
12 at the moment ( can be more ) England Cricketers are on Central Contract paid for by the EWCB ( BOSSES OF Cricket in England ). This means the Counties paid for them only when they play for them. It gives the England set up complete license to have them as much as they want.
There are players in the England squad who are not on Central Contracts because their perfomances havenīt earned the right. Their selection follows the same rules as the England Football team. They have to be released for games but must return to the counties between games etc...
Central contractors only go back to the counties if England lets them.

The whole central contracts thing is criticised pretty heavily. A lot think it rewards mediocrity.
