Title: The Film Thread
tigerthesmurf85 - November 18, 2007 03:56 PM (GMT)
Thought it'd be a good idea to have a thread about films and cinema. If there already is one then my apologies.
This thread could be use to recommend films etc.
I'm off to see American Gangster. Heard it's very good. Has anyone seen it?
What film did you see on the weekend?
What film do you want to see?
Post here :good:
EDIT:
'The rating system for this thread, as proposed by SHLS, is as follows:
0-1: Recommend this film to your worst enemy if and only if you're a heartless bastard
2-3: Awful - don't recommend it
4-5: Decent, average - possibly worth a watch
6-7: Good film - recommended
8: Great film - definitely worth a watch
9: Excellent film - you must watch it
10: If you don't watch this film, you deserve to be shot
Be as accurate as possible'

Haven't seen it but apparently Russell Crowe is severely mis-cast.

Does he turn up in his gladiator outfit?

I heard some good stuff about it though apparently it's not very accurate

I will have my revenge, in this life or the next.

Anchorman is brilliant, I highly recommend it.
f*ck you san diego!
The Merse - November 18, 2007 05:09 PM (GMT)
Good film, I saw it yesterday.
Thankfully, it's not bogged down in "performances" (a la Crowe in Gladiator and The Insider)- it relies on a good, well-paced storyline that keeps the enthusiasm levels high.
Crowe and Washington are excellent when on screen- they do their job in a concise, effective manner.

Beowulf is shite...no closure and goes on and on and his arm grows in length at the precise moment...and Grendel looks like a total mong... (But Angelina jolie... :whacky: )
 4/10
Mr Brighterside - November 18, 2007 07:04 PM (GMT)
I recently bought Brick, amazing film, one of the best scripts I think I've ever seen in a film (if that makes sense)
I also watched Shawshank Redemption yesterday, very very good film. Some things in it annoyed me but overall a good film.
CaptainKolo - November 18, 2007 07:16 PM (GMT)
I've got Downfall on Sky+ which I recorded yesterday, it was recommended to me by a mate who said it was the best film he'd ever seen.
I've since noticed that, not only has it got subtitles, it's nearly 3 hours long :yikes:
Anybody seen it? Should I persevere or just delete it?

Watch it. It was amazing.

Top films that must be seen are:
Shawshank Redemption
The Pianist
Deja Vu
Inside Man
All Saw films
Downfall
McNamara That Ghost... - November 18, 2007 07:30 PM (GMT)
Downfall is very good - you really get that sense of claustrophobia in the bunker and of course the sheer paranoia from Bruno Ganz's portrayal of Hitler.
Shame about The Shawshank Redemption though. :1run:

Just got back. I thought Russel Crowe was very very good. And Denzel Washington was very good as well. I recommend it, if a bit too long.

Overbearing, self-righteous, schmaltzy cock. In my opinion of course.
:coffee:
Mr Brighterside - November 18, 2007 07:49 PM (GMT)
you're approaching 50,000 posts now maccy :yikes:
I didn't like some bits of it like the warden pretending to be a Christian or the same issue of self rightousness or the lack of any mention of andy looking after the dead prisoner's wife or kid
still if you look at it as triumph over adversity and ignore the bits you want to it is a very good film
McNamara That Ghost... - November 18, 2007 07:53 PM (GMT)
I know, not sure if that's an achievement or an indictment.

Volver - with Penelope Cruz - A truly beautiful film. She has a great voice too.
(Gosh just found the song she sings in it.)
Raimunda - Sung by Penelope Cruz :rose:
VolverPedro Almodovar totally loves women as they are all so strong in his films. :good:
McNamara That Ghost... - November 18, 2007 08:07 PM (GMT)
Rashomon.
Tokyo Story.

Sir Digby Chicken Caesar - November 18, 2007 08:14 PM (GMT)
Personally I think Shawshank is a bit overrated but that's just my opinion...
Films to see:-
Apocalypse Now
2001: A Space Odyssey
if....
The Silence of the Lambs
Dark City
The Usual Suspects
Twelve Monkeys
LA Confidential
Pulp Fiction
there are many more...

If you don't mind me asking. What's the link between Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon?
tigerthesmurf85 - November 18, 2007 08:41 PM (GMT)
Saw Trainspotting last night. Thought it was okay, but don't know what all the fuss about it being best British film of the decade etc.

Anyone seen 'Into the Wild'? I have read the book which is brilliant but the film looks a tad overwrought and overlong.
Films I've seen recently which were good are....
Tell No One
Volver
Nine Queens
The Summer of the Sunflowers
