Let me set the scene:
April 2004: Arsenal are cruising in the Premiership and they play Man Utd in the FA Cup with hopes of winning the treble. And this happened:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/fa_cup/3571955.stm4 days later, Arsenal are involved in a huge match against Chelsea in the CL. And this happened:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/c...gue/3593083.stmLets hope history doesn't repeat itself. It's a must win game. :good:
Jens' Face - February 11, 2008 11:15 PM (GMT)
only if you believe the situations -- the psychology, in particular -- is parallel. Me, I don't.
Coca Kolo - February 12, 2008 12:04 AM (GMT)
Did you have to bring that up.. <_<

:partytime: I just wanted to be the party pooper.
And Jens, I genuinely believe parallels are there w.r.t. mentality. The squad's confidence seems to be sky high at the moment. If anything, I think there was more of a sense of belief and togetherness in that team (2004). When we went a goal down, nobody panicked, and everyone almost knew that we'd pull it back. (Of course, it's easy to say in hindsight).
But that was during games, once we had lost games, I think we were much worse losers then than we are now - but I don't know whether that is a good thing or a bad thing.
Just like the unbeaten season (up to April), we had passed every single test handed to us. We didn't know how we were going to react to a significant loss, until we actually did against Man Utd. Similarly, we haven't lost a significant match this season - I don't count the Tottenham Carling Cup game as a very important match given that the CC was our 4th priority.
Coca Kolo - February 12, 2008 12:26 AM (GMT)
Anyway for my money, I think this team has a different mentality to the Invincibles one, of course it's hard to compare but whats been telling for me is the way we have responded to the rare defeats this season, for example when we lost away to M'Boro we then beat Chelsea, a team who we haven't beaten for 3 seasons (?) before that match, and then the following week we take all 3 (and possibly lucky) points agaisnt Spurs.
You raise concerns and draw a comparison, all fair ones IMO, but this team I think is mentally strong enough.
Synergetic - February 12, 2008 12:38 AM (GMT)
Lets hope so.
In fact, lets hope they don't lose so such a situation never arises. :good:
Coca Kolo - February 12, 2008 12:39 AM (GMT)
Exactly.
(although I do think we'll lose agaisnt the Mancs and AC :1run: )
Jens' Face - February 12, 2008 12:47 AM (GMT)
There is one very important difference in the perspective the two teams have on their situation. The team you brought up, Synergetic, were the favorites, the team everyone was talking about. The team we've got now has been the underdog all year, despite leading the league for most of it. I think the current team has more of a chip on their shoulder, more of a need to prove themselves. That's a significant psychological difference. What the effects of that difference will be, of course, are impossible to know.
Cripps - February 12, 2008 01:12 AM (GMT)
Mancs arent on the best run
They are there for the taking
We must take advantage

Fair point, Jens.
Even thought we are favourites for the Premiership now, I still think Man Utd will be the bookies' favourites to win the FA Cup tie at OT.

Thicknthin - February 12, 2008 01:26 PM (GMT)
Heaven only knows what sort of a team we'll put out for this one given the evident fatigue last night, the long injury list, the fitness questions over Kolo and Song and the AC game coming the next Wednesday. With the likes of Gibbs and Randall out on loan there's no easy Carling Cup squad route open either so its a real selection toughie for Arsene. I just hope he doesn't take risks with players potentially carrying knocks for this game (Flam, Phil, Fab-fatigue, Ade-fatigue) and if he can tries to blood in those back from injury as atleast they are out the picture anyway (Diaby, Rosicky, RVP). Whilst we don't want another CC semi debacle you've gotto think the bigger picture is the AC game and Brum away the following weekend.
Jens' Face - February 12, 2008 03:38 PM (GMT)
It's funny. A lot of folk at RedCafe seem to think Arsenal will win this game. We're really got the supporters (like that matters) running scared.
Personally, I think Utd are MUCH more likely to win.
Just, please, no draw.
