Title: Beckham left out of Capello's squad.

Can't say I am too surprised - no point including someone who won't be there for the long haul.

Shame really, he's made all that effort at the Arsenal training ground for nothing really... It's only one cap ffs, just give it to him and let him bow out gracefully

PGFC - January 31, 2008 11:57 AM (GMT)
He should have kept up his match fitness training with an English club during his winter break.

Oh.

Ho-hum

McNamara That Ghost... - January 31, 2008 11:59 AM (GMT)
I suppose Capello didn't become successful through sentimental notions.

'Spose :coffee:

It's Up For Grabs Now - January 31, 2008 12:02 PM (GMT)
Fcuk it, give him his cap its only a friendly. Its not like were blessed with wide players anyway..

Coney - January 31, 2008 12:13 PM (GMT)
I'd have stuck him on the bench and given him a run-out in the last 5 minutes just to give him the 100th cap. Sentimental? Yes. While it will not disrupt anything, the other players will know that good effort can be rewarded. Whilst you might want to show you are tough enough to make hard decisions when necessary (which I am sure Capello will be prepared to make) it does no harm to indicate that under special circumstances you will make a gesture provided it does not cause any harm. This would be such a case.

Of course, if Beckham had not been a dick all those years ago getting himself sent off, he might have helped us beat the Argies in which case he would have already got 100 caps.

McNamara That Ghost... - January 31, 2008 12:37 PM (GMT)
I suppose from Capello's perspective, he'll want to see a team that is going to be playing in September for the World Cup qualifiers, regardless of how 'insignificant' Beckham's role may well be in the upcoming friendly, if he was included.

Oh - no problem with that - he has to drop those who will not be in the world cup squad for the finals if we qualify and players like Becks will not be part of that. However, I think the fans would appreciate the gesture and it would not throw a spanner in the works. The other players would understand and, I think, respect him for doing that.

Capello would be appear to be taking this job very seriously, if the FA/supporters want a coach to cow-tow on this occasion, to man who is not even playing regular football then maybe they should've wished for the previous incumbents to still be in a job. Fair play to Capello I say.

Cripps - January 31, 2008 12:57 PM (GMT)
I can understand Capellos point of view but come on, just bring him off the bench for a few minutes and let him get his 100th cap.

I'm thinking like when Wenger put Keown on for the last minute of a couple of games so he could get a PL medal in his last season - something along those lines. It is not a sign of weakness and means nothing about the general future. It would also emphasise that Becks is not part of his future plans by implication.

McNamara That Ghost... - January 31, 2008 01:05 PM (GMT)
Capello is completely different though, we all knew that when the appointment was made.

andaluz - January 31, 2008 01:44 PM (GMT)
Am I the only to think that the only reason our lives are still being polluted by the worthless, WGAF? showbiz saga of whether or not Beckham gets his 100 cap is that his current total is vastly inflated by caps he did not warrant in the first place.

If he was on, say, 63, today we would not be having this tiresome irrelevance in the first place.

Please God, when are we going to be delivered from "news" of this pathologically self-regarding and self-absorbed ninny ?

Is it going to take a wooden stake through his heart. Well done Fabio. Don't even think of relenting.

I can't quite make up my mind.

Mr. Miyagis Bonsai Tree - January 31, 2008 03:12 PM (GMT)
Not about Beckham but Theo's been included in the under-21 squad

Cripps - January 31, 2008 03:27 PM (GMT)
Agbonlahor and Derbyshire not in under 21s

SSN think they might be in the full squad.

Agbonlahor i can understand but who the hell is Derbyshire and whats he done?

The Emirates Gallastico - January 31, 2008 03:56 PM (GMT)
Derbyshire has been quite impressive on his substitute appearances at least.

Deserves to be there more than Theo IMO.

Alias - January 31, 2008 03:58 PM (GMT)
Derbyshire has been shit this season. He won't be included by Capello.

Has Ashley Young been called up?

Alias - January 31, 2008 04:01 PM (GMT)
Heskey called up, WTF has he done this season?

Jenas called up, dear lord

Cripps - January 31, 2008 04:05 PM (GMT)
James, Carson and Kirkland are the keepers

Cripps - January 31, 2008 04:06 PM (GMT)
Curtis Davies?

WTF?

Gunnersgod - January 31, 2008 04:07 PM (GMT)
its only a crap friendly against the swiss. i would of let beckham captain the side for the night, the most fitting way to win his 100th cap.

he deserves it.

WTF?

has the squad been announced?

Cripps - January 31, 2008 04:22 PM (GMT)
Yes

Mr. Miyagis Bonsai Tree - January 31, 2008 04:24 PM (GMT)
What a defensive line-up that is, I think I could name maybe 3 players in that squad with an ounce of creativity in them...

Cripps - January 31, 2008 04:25 PM (GMT)
12 defenders in there

3 left backs as well

Coca Kolo - January 31, 2008 04:29 PM (GMT)
QUOTE (Cripps @ Jan 31 2008, 04:22 PM)
Yes

well can you provide a link or copy and paste the squad on GW then?

Mr. Miyagis Bonsai Tree - January 31, 2008 04:39 PM (GMT)
Good thing about Walcott being in the U-21 squad is that he WILL be played upfront :good:

Coca Kolo - January 31, 2008 04:42 PM (GMT)
Finally the BBC Sport page uploads the squad.

the ones in bold should not be in the squad;

England squad to play Switzerland:

Goalkeepers:David James (Portsmouth), Scott Carson (Liverpool on loan at Aston Villa), Chris Kirkland(Wigan Athletic)

Defenders: Wayne Bridge (Chelsea), Ashley Cole(Chelsea), Curtis Davies(West Brom on loan at Aston Villa), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Glen Johnson (Portsmouth), Ledley King(Tottenham Hotspur), Nicky Shorey (Reading), Wes Brown (Manchester United), Joleon Lescott (Everton), Micah Richards (Manchester City), Matthew Upson (West Ham United), Jonathan Woodgate (Tottenham Hotspur)

Midfielders: Michael Carrick(Manchester United), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Gareth Barry (Aston Villa), Jermaine Jenas (Tottenham Hotspur), Owen Hargreaves (Manchester United), Joe Cole (Chelsea), Ashley Young (Aston Villa), Stewart Downing (Middlesbrough), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Chelsea), David Bentley (Blackburn Rovers)

Forwards: Emile Heskey(Wigan Athletic), Gabriel Agbonlahor (Aston Villa), Michael Owen(Newcastle United), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Peter Crouch(Liverpool)

Cripps - January 31, 2008 04:43 PM (GMT)
Any reason why?

Coca Kolo - January 31, 2008 04:47 PM (GMT)
Kirkland - pile of poo, Hart should be there.

Cole - been crap this season.

Davies - potential, but not ready yet, should be plying his trade with U'21's.

King - he's been injured all season.

Carrick - in and out of the United team and not as good as last season.

Heskey - hmm..

Owen - been inspiring for Newcastle hasn't he?

Crouch - can't get in the Liverpool team.

Alias - January 31, 2008 04:48 PM (GMT)
Heskey has one goal this season - prolific!

Cripps - February 3, 2008 12:40 AM (GMT)
7 players have been cut.

King not surprisingly is injured as is Heskey.

The other 5 are Shorey, Johnson, Davies, Carrick and Downing

What was the point in naming then in the squad in the first place then?

Just another point on Beckham, has Capello put a rod on his own back by not picking him by saying hes not fit enough? Does that mean he will not pick players right after they have come back from injury? Doubt that

tigerthesmurf85 - February 3, 2008 12:51 AM (GMT)
Give him his 100th for god's sake. He deserves it. It's a rubbish friendly anyway.
