Title: The England penalty shoot out record :/
Gooner4Life84 - March 13, 2008 06:33 PM (GMT)
With both Everton and Spuds being knocked out of the UEFA Cup by penalties. It got me thinking yet again at our continued failure with penalty shoot outs.
Namely Germany 1990, Euro 96, Germany 2006 etc. Why is this?
It`s not as if we have crap penalty kick takers. Lampard, Gerrard being decent penalty takers for example. I`ve always thought it`s the pressure that gets to the players when it comes to a shoot out. Because mentally they`re already beaten, with previous England teams missing penalty kicks and just letting the pressure get to them really.

I don't buy into this "It's a bit of a lottery" shite. You're very likely to win a penalty shoot-out if you've got players with better finishing than the opposition, players with more mental strength and players who can out-smart the goalkeeper.
With England, I'm guessing we have players with better finishing. The 'better mental strength' is hard to call, but no England player can outthink any goalkeeper because they're all thick as f'ck.

For years England managers have gone on about "you can't practise penalties'.
Bollocks.
Of course you can.
You can't recreate the pressure but you can practise the actual skill of taking them.
That way you're more likely to be able to do it when under pressure.
By that rationale players shouldn't practise taking direct free-kicks because you can't recreate the pressure of a game.
The Germans have always practised penalties. And they rarely lose in a shootout.

It is. England have a 1 in 14 million chance of winning. <_<

The pressure excuse is BS.
Anything you do in a match has pressure on it so does that mean you cant practise it in training.
For example, one on one with a keeper

It's not an excuse, players do feel pressure and the penalty shoot out in a big game is an intense as it gets.
That said, if you practise the skill enough you're more likely to be able to do it when under pressure.
The Germans do, we don't. Look what happens.

Cripps.. Penalties have everything to do with pressure.
It's the player with mental strength that comes out on top.
No keeper can save a well struck penalty, btw.

Yes there is pressure but its not the only thing in football that has pressure on it so you cant practise the other parts cos of the pressure as well?

It's a combination of skill and pressure.
England aren't all that good at penalties which is part of the reason they crumble under the high pressure of a shoot out.
If they practised more then they'd be more likely to be able to do it under the pressure. Obvious really.

Lets just hope Capello has them practising penalties for Euro 2008 this summer
