Oh god, I hope Arseinger doesn't read this.

<_<

He does speak some sort of sense, from the quotes. Obviously the media have exaggerated it and the title in the link is misleading.

Completely - not once does he warn of an exodus.

Grimandi's Perm - May 28, 2008 03:56 PM (GMT)
van Persie is the last person to complain about not being paid enough!

Alias - May 28, 2008 03:56 PM (GMT)
Yes - lets pay him more to sit in the physio room!

bergstar - May 28, 2008 03:58 PM (GMT)
A little difficult to digest coming from him.

He doesn't. Not once. The article really isn't about him at all, despite the misleading headline.

gunsofashburtongrove - May 28, 2008 04:01 PM (GMT)
Agree with him. Particularly the fact that players at 27-28 would want more. Thats the time when they start to peak, and a player any plays only till around 35. Quiet understandable then that they start demanding more.

Professor Zim - May 28, 2008 04:06 PM (GMT)
Frankly when they actually win something then they can complain at this stage they can f*ck off.

Since when do players with no pedigree and who've won jack sh*t and aren't anywhere near the top get to demand pay rises!

Sorry but if they hadn't bottled it they might be get nice bonuses now...fact is when push came to shove they weren't up to the task, you have to earn good money it doesn't just land on your lap!

Spiggsy - May 28, 2008 04:49 PM (GMT)
Talking about 3 to 4 times as much gives a range of 38,000 to 50,000 ... which if he is referring to what would be our key first team players, is on the low side to be honest. Agreed not everyone should be above 50k ... but quite a few should be at least 60 - 80 to keep them.

bergstar - May 28, 2008 05:00 PM (GMT)
I also think a little sense of reality wouldn't go a miss, economically a large percentage of people are feeling a bit of a pinch right now and face a bleak future, they don't need to hear an already overpaid sportsman talking about their modest salaries. Sometimes they should shut the feck up, in an era when they have so much media training and have so many advisors around them, it's amazing just how insensitive they are.

You are bang on.

A mate of mine pointed out how good Arsenal were in only increasing ticket prices by 2.6% this season. I put him straight immediately when I said that in terms of £s and ps that our increase is amongst the highest, as it is 2.6% from an extortioantely high level.

Many of the people funding these ridiculous salaries are seeing the cost of essentials rise like never before whilst seeing job security become precarious.

I know economically, Arsenal has to compete with other Clubs, but the wages these guys earn (that I pay) is sickeningly obscene and cannot be justified. To witness these contract wranglings and insensitive statements from players, who lets be frank, have achieved nothing in three years, really makes me angry and makes me question whether or not I want to continue funding them.

Robin van Persie has warned Arsenal they could lose all their star players if they don't change their financial structure during the summer.

Van Persie is currently discussing a new deal, but knows the north London club are not in line with other big teams in Europe when it comes to paying players' salaries.

Arsenal fans were disappointed to see Mathieu Flamini leave the club at the end of the season after he failed to agree a new contract and was able to join AC Milan as a free agent.

Uncertainty continues to surround the long-term futures of Alexander Hleb, Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Adebayor, and Van Persie worries that the team could break up if the Arsenal board do not review their contract negotiations.

Van Persie said: "They should make sure that these players stay. Arsenal have a policy in which they will not go over a specific amount of money when agreeing the salary of a player.

"They won't pay enormous amounts of money. I think that they should go to a higher level of salary.

"If you want to keep the group together, you have to keep them happy. If you are 27 or 28, I can understand that you would make the decision to go elsewhere if you can earn three or four times as much.

"If that sort of money was also paid here, I'm sure that person would stay."

Van Persie has a contract with Arsenal until 2011 and is not in a hurry to put pen to paper. The Holland international says it is not all about money and that he loves playing for Arsenal in the Premier League.

But he also knows that other clubs are paying their players a lot more and does not want to see his side lose their best players and fail to challenge for silverware next season.

Van Persie, speaking from the Holland training camp in Hoenderloo, added: "It is the principle. It is very important that Arsenal keep these guys. This group is unique. If a number of them leave, it will be different.

"I think of myself as an Arsenal man but Arsenal should also try to make sure that we all grow together."

This is a warning to the club and Vans is being honest. No point in shooting the messenger. Vans sounds 100% behind Wengers vision and keeps saying we need to keep the team together but the club has to be prepared to pay the wages.

Regardless if they've won nothing, the club is tight when it comes to wages. Cole one medals but we tried to haggle him out of £5,000. Like Persie said, it's the principle and you know when someone is taking the piss and they did it with Cole. Even Wenger thought it was silly to lose Cole over £5,000.

If we can't afford multi million pound signings then we should be able to afford to pay our players a decent wage and keep them at the club.

£5,000 a week is £260,000 a year or ~200 season tickets.

As mentioned by others I don't think I'll be breaking out the :violin: and tbh I'm contemplating Fulham season tickets ~£500 vrs £20 membership+time/hassle getting tickets+ 20x£2 booking fees+ 20x~£45 tickets+20x£5.5 pies (excl travel near enough same and food is poor at Fulham) total ~£1070 so I can afford to pay for my dad's tickets (which I try to do anyway) and have hassle free Premiership football and get to the "big" games

For once i was pleased with Steve Howard's take on this in the Sun today. Howard points out RVP has in his last four season never got above 17 starts for the club and has spent over half the seasons out injured and therefore should be extremely grateful that the club haven't asked for any of their £50k a week wages back.
RVP really has been a total idiot to air such comments without thought to his own situation. Perhaps he too fancies a move and a stirring performance in the Euro's would no doubt help again raise the profile of a man who makes Louis Saha look reliable to say nothing of his colourful past and rumoured love of the herb. Personally i expect RVP to give another interview in very short order grovelling like Hleb did the other day.
