Title: Goal of the season Bets are off
dazthegooner - June 4, 2008 10:58 AM (GMT)
| QUOTE |
Bookmakers have stopped taking bets on Match of the Day's goal-of-the-season competition after a huge plunge on Emmanuel Adebayor.
The Arsenal striker's stunning goal at Spurs in September was 9-2 third favourite to top the poll.
But those odds plummeted to 1-5 after 400 bets were staked on the Gunners ace in little over four hours yesterday afternoon.
Leading bookmaker Blue Square suspended betting amid fears of a BBC insider tipping off punters.
The competition sees 10 of the season's best goals judged by a panel of the BBC show's presenters, including Gary Lineker, Alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson.
Blue Square's spokesman Alan Alger said: "We're not saying any of the Match of the Day team are responsible but the market seems to suggest that the goal-of-the-season result has been leaked somewhere.
"At one stage, the number of bets we were taking on Adebayor was comparable to the amount we were taking on the Champions League Final a couple of weeks ago. It was crazy.
"Even when we cut his odds to 1-5, people were still betting on him. In our experience, punters only bet like that when they know the result.
"We had Cristiano Ronaldo's free-kick against Portsmouth as the favourite, followed by his back-heel against Aston Villa, but we will be amazed if Adebayor doesn't win it now."
A BBC spokeswoman said: "The panel made their decision last Wednesday in accordance with our rules. "We have no evidence to suggest that there has been a leak but if there is evidence, we will investigate." |

Ronaldo's freekick will win.
It is Hansen who picks it so it will bound to be a Man Utd player as he has some wierd fascination with Ronaldo and Rooney.
Coney - June 4, 2008 11:07 AM (GMT)
The BBC even put in 2 Ronaldo goals, neither of which were particularly special - he has actually scored better ones during the season. I presume that they have actually chosen the 2 Ronaldo goals which gave the commentators the biggest orgasms at the time. I accept Ronaldo is a great player and has scored some excellent goals this season, but the two on offer are certainly not his best goals.
Personally, I don't even think it was Ade's goal that was the best anyway. I forget who scored it, but it was 'goal 1' on the list - a good solo effort bringing the ball in and shooting from a good 25-30 yards out. Certainly not Ronaldos, then.
But as mentioned above. It will be Ronaldo who wins and it will be his free kick. A total injustice to all, strangely including an injustice to Ronaldo as it was not his best goal. But then, Hansen is Hansen. (Is he over-compensating for the fact that as a Liverpool player he is supposed to hate manu?)

His free kick was special, not seen a ball curve twice in two different directions before. His little back heel was nothing great but looked nice on the eye. If it was Cesc everyone here would cry if it wasnt on goal of the season.

he just kicks it and the wind does the rest

If you want to see a ball curve in two directions, look again at the goal scored by Ronaldinho against Seaman when Brazil beat England in the WC a few years ago. Seaman was blamed but it was not the wind, it was fluid dynamics in action - an effect Ronaldinho had sussed out (though he might not have understood the mathematics).
Basically when you kick a spinning ball it curves in one direction until the speed drops below a certain level, when it will then curve in the opposite direction. You only see it sometimes on long free kicks because on shorter ones, the ball has already hit the net (or the keeper) before the speed has dropped enough for the second effect to take place.
The goal against Seaman was something like 40+ yards. You see him head for where the ball seems to be going and then at last minute it switches the other way leaving him flapping about and a tad confused. It was not his fault even though he was blamed for it. I reckon that Ronaldinho had noticed the effect when practicing and tried a few long shots. He may not have understood what was going on but would have noticed that the effect was consistent which is why he tried it.

But it was not even Ronaldo's best goal. And just because it was good, why should it be in the top 12? There were loads of goals scored which could be classed as 'good', but you'd think the BBC would select the top 12 which were exceptional.
As I (and others) have said, Ronaldo will win it even though he did not score the best goal of the 12 and even though they did not show his best goals. It is the BBC being lazy again. Put on 12 goals including 2 by Ronaldo. Since he was PotY no one will question the result.

It was not an exceptional free kick. It was well taken and placed in the top corner where the keeper would have the least chance of getting it. But a lot of players from a lot of teams have done that kind of thing. I though Jimmy Bullard's effort was better than the Ronaldo one, myself.
I have no problem with people saying that Ronaldo is a great player. I have no problem if Ade's goal did not win goal of the season. I have no problem if a great goal by Ronaldo was in the list. However, neither of Ronaldo's goals on the GotS were special and others have scored better goals during the year.

Other Ronaldo goals may have been better than the 2 in the goal of the season nominees but they arent in cos they werent the best of the respective month they were scored in.
For example, one of the goals that he scored that you think is better than the free kick might have been scored in september but Ades won goal of the month that season and therefore Ronaldos goal in that month wont be nominated

OK - if the BBC had just shown the goals-of-the-month and chosen from that, what you suggest would have been reasonable. But they had 12 goals, didn't they?
