Title: Gokhan Inler

Inler, 23, is one of a few Switzerland players who impressed during their Euro 2008 campaign, which came to an official end on Sunday, with a win over Portugal.

They had been eliminated days before, and Portugal fielded a second string for the game as they had already qualified, but the Swiss were nevertheless impressive - in that game as well as the two they were unfortunate to lose - and Inler in particular is thought to have caught the eye of some English clubs.

Liverpool were linked with the player even before the commencement of Euro 2008, as well as his Udinese team-mate Andrea Dossena (who is still said to be on the verge of completing a £6-7 million move).

However, since his emergence at the Euros and Rafael Benitez's continued pursuit of Aston Villa's Gareth Barry and a move thought to be imminent, Arsenal have jumped to the head of the queue for Inler's services, with Sunderland also thought to have been watching his display against Portugal, according to a report in Blick.

The midfielder, whose release clause is said to be in the region of £8 million, would be invaluable at the Stadium of Light, but the more likely destination of the Emirates could also see him slot in as an able replacement for Mathieu Flamini, who went the other way, leaving England for Italy, as Milan snapped him up on a free transfer.

Signing for the Arsenal would be one of the few things he could do that would redeem him. (Also curing cancer or personally winning the Eurovisions -- for Turkey.)

If he signed for Liveryawn, on the other hand, there's no way back to grace ... he will haunted forever by the twin ghosts of Ataturk and Herbert Chapman.
