Adebayor Returns Home
Monday 23 June
8.00-8.30pm BBC RADIO 4

Earlier this year, footballer Emmanuel Adebayor was voted African Player of the Year by the listeners of BBC World Service. Now, as he returns home to Togo to collect his award from the President, he shares his hopes and dreams for African football with reporter Farayi Mungazi.

Now a star of European football, the giant Arsenal striker is hot property, eagerly sought after by Europe's biggest clubs, but he counts himself a "true son of Africa". His new-found status and prestige has given Adebayor a determination to use his fame and the power of football to change the lives of young Africans.

Adebayor is a controversial footballing figure in his home country of Togo. Fierce rows with the national coach and the Togolese football authorities have led to several walkouts from the national team. Mungazi follows Adebayor from his participation in a World Cup qualifying game, held in Ghana due to crowd violence in Togo, to a meeting with the King of Kumasi and finally on to a triumphant return to Togo to receive his award.

Presenter/Farayi Mungazi, Producer/Mark Burman

Cheers.

There is a big feature on this in the new Arsenal mag (with Nasri on the cover). Whatever he may have done or not done in the summer, this 'tour of hope' through Nigeria, Togo and Ghana really does show Adebayor is trying to help his homeland.

That or a finely timed piece of PR from the club to get him back into our good books...;)
