Title: Trio track Gilberto

It's Spelt Vassiriki - June 24, 2008 12:09 PM (GMT)
A host of top European clubs are monitoring Gilberto Silva's situation at Arsenal, skysports.com understands.

Gilberto is believed to be considering his future at Emirates Stadium after enduring a frustrating campaign last season.

The 32-year-old struggled to hold down a regular place in Arsene Wenger's side last season due to the form of Cesc Fabgregas and Mathieu Flamini.

The Brazilian international has previously intimated he may have to move on if he is not playing regular first team football at this stage of his career.

The news has alerted several sides across Europe with Greek side Panathinaikos, Valencia and Juventus all tracking the midfielder.

Gilberto, who has one-year left on his current contract, is set to discuss his future with agent Frank Trimboli when he returns from holiday later this month.

Wenger would be loath to lose Gilberto having already seen Flamini leave the club this summer, but he could face a fight to keep the South American out of the clutches of rival clubs.

Marc Overmars - June 24, 2008 12:12 PM (GMT)
If we do let him go then we'd better have a DM lined up to replace.

Injury Time - June 24, 2008 12:13 PM (GMT)
surely he should talk to Wenger about his future rather than his agent  as his agent is not going to say "no stay here I don't want any commission from any deal that may happen if Arsenal sell you"

Professor Zim - June 24, 2008 12:26 PM (GMT)
 Bon voyage

marc - June 24, 2008 12:29 PM (GMT)
Good

michaelthomas89 - June 24, 2008 12:37 PM (GMT)
Until we get another defensive midfielder in we may as well keep him. Given his age and the fact there's only a year left to go on his contract we'd get peanuts for him anyway. Might as well just keep him for another year until his contract runs out and then let him go on a Bosman if we aren't able to add a replacement for the departing Flamini this summer.

Flava Flav - June 24, 2008 01:17 PM (GMT)
Well it wont be Juve as they are buying Xabi Alonso from the pool

macgunner - June 24, 2008 01:35 PM (GMT)
He was crap when he did play last season .Hes to old doesnt have the legs and if he starts for us next year i can see him having the sort of last few games we got out of Sol.Time to say thanks for some great years but good bye .That said we still need a DM :oldboy:

Cripps - June 24, 2008 02:13 PM (GMT)
If he goes, he will be missed.

arsenal901 - June 24, 2008 02:47 PM (GMT)
i bet if we let him run off his contract, he is going to have the best season in an arsenal shirt and then leave for juve on a free transfer.. better sell him now than feel the disappointment! :coffee:

I'd rather watch him have a fantastic year and leave rather than sell him now for a fee of around £1m.

He is 32 at the moment. By next year, Arsenal will need to have a replacement ready anyway.

tigerthesmurf85 - June 24, 2008 03:40 PM (GMT)
If he goes, Wenger will HAVE to buy a top class CM. So go please.

:faint:

Welshgooner - June 24, 2008 04:25 PM (GMT)
As long as he doesnt start the season partnering Cesc in central mid, i'd like him to stay as he would add depth to the squad.
But if Wenger simply puts him in, in Flams place next season we havent got a hope in hell of winning anythiing next year. He cannot be a 1st choice midfielder. :oldboy:

lucas_priest - June 24, 2008 06:07 PM (GMT)
A great servant but his time has passed. Let him go with our best wishes and sign a replacement for Flamini.

That French guy at Pompey looks handy!

Coca Kolo - June 24, 2008 06:32 PM (GMT)
No no no and no. Keep him!

it seems that GS is going to play for Panathinaikos FC next year, or at least, this is what greek newspapers are saying here. it is said that his manager is going to be in Athens today to discuss some details on the deal, with the two clubs having agreed on a 1.5 mil euro fee.

i'll love him even with his new green shirt =/

McNamara That Ghost... - July 9, 2008 09:53 AM (GMT)

1 year left on contract 1.5m euro or ~£1m, better than nothing I guess, if true at least the heat will help his joints.

Marc Overmars - July 9, 2008 12:04 PM (GMT)
How happy will you be though if in the (likely) circumstance Wenger replaces them with lesser players??

Well considering I can't stand watching those leaving it would be hard. I'm really not fussed about them leaving, it gives others I prefer a chance.

Cripps - July 9, 2008 12:11 PM (GMT)
Sell only when we have a replacement.

An exceptional player for us over the years and sorry to see him go if he does but times move on

Shit...this one looks a done deal as Ken's quoted..i really hope wenger knows what he's doing. What with the PSG boy saying no as he wants to do a flamini next year you do kinda wonder what's cooking unless say Barca have cracked and will let Yaya go.

not a very nice thing to say about your teammate

KaiserKolo - July 9, 2008 06:03 PM (GMT)
Marc, the PSG player is Chantome, and he signed a new deal till 2011. I'm guessing one of Denilson and Diaby will make the first team and we'll sign a DM, we have to. Toulalan will do nicely...

XsNrG - July 9, 2008 09:00 PM (GMT)
Hmm, maybe that means we will get in someone who is like a proper wall, rather than an invisible one.

Heres the pic of Gilberto signing for Panathinaikos:
