We seem to be scouting this guy. Sky sports say he's a midfielder, but does anyone know what specific position he plays in?

KaiserKolo - October 19, 2008 02:54 PM (GMT)
I believe he is a playmaker, but I'm not sure. Could be a DM. Liege seem to be pretty impressive, first Feillani and now this guy. Would be a good signing, if he is a DM. If not, he would just add to the number of CAMs that we have.

Xaviola - October 19, 2008 03:13 PM (GMT)
I watched Everton vs Liege and they completely dominated midfield. They are definately strong contenders for the Uefa cup. I don't remember whether or not I saw Defour that game though, I wasn't paying attention.

I agree with your second sentence, we don't need any more CAMs with the likes of Ramsey and Wilshere coming through. Hope he's a DM (or that we are looking for one if not him).

Defour played that game as the lynchpin of a midfield 3. I wouldn't call him a CAM or a DM as such, more of a box-2-boxer.

The thing that impressed me most about him though was his leadership and his presence on the pitch, the guy is captain of his side at 20.

I think there is something to be said for having your captain right in the middle of the pitch.

i dont like his last name... <_<

Coca Kolo - October 20, 2008 11:26 PM (GMT)
Was very impressed by him against L'Pool and Everton, reminded me of Roy Keane.

He broke peoples legs and ended their careers as well?

Or was it his fine vocubulary ie "stick it up your bollocks" that did it?

Certainly looks like he likes a battle, from the games i've seen. Here we go with this DM/ CAM shite again, what ever happened to players that can do both

Just in general, why players have to be put in categories. It's ridiculous, a top class midfielder cobines both roles. It's about having a partnership that works in tandem. When Gilberto first joined us he used to bomb forward when the time was right, like Veira and petit. The likes of Keane, Robson even Essien.

Not seen him much but have done a couple of time in highlight shows and the likes. From what i remember he was alright but nothing really stand out about him, would prefer someone older with more experience at the top level. Maybe another cheeky bit for alonso or even Barry in Jan.

It's just a convenient shorthand I think, a way of getting a handle on the player's role. A label never tells the whole story but what can you do? It's an attention deficient, convenience society.

A lot of players defy easy categorisation anyway or can play many positions. Eboue, is probably something like a defensive midfield right wing full back (DMRWFB).

Personally speaking I'm classed as an Application Recovery & Support Executive (ARSE).

ARSENAL are poised to move for Standard Liege midfielder Steven Defour.

The Belgian international is currently out with a broken foot but Arsene Wenger is a big fan.

The Gunners boss has sent scouts to watch Defour but knows he faces competition from Valencia and Everton for his signature.

Defour, 21, recently agreed a contract until 2012 and will cost around £8million.

Word of caution: Diaby looked awesome before he broke his ankle - now look at him. Been shit ever since.

Is this just an October thing then, trying to sign this guy?

I look forward to the idle specultion next year as him being a replacement after Diaby's shock move to Real Madrid.

Standard Liege midfielder Steven Defour has been linked with clubs such as Arsenal, Everton and Real Madrid in the past couple of months, and it now appears as if Manchester United are interested in signing the Belgian international as well.

The 21-year-old sustained a broken foot about a month ago and is expected to be sidelined until the end of 2009 due to the problem. However, Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws claims that Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has written a letter to Defour to wish him a speedy return.

"Dear Steven, I heard about your injury," the letter supposedly reads. "You will probably be devastated at the moment and you'll have all kinds of questions. However, there is no reason to be concerned as everything will work out fine. You'll have to work hard to return to match action, but I'll keep on monitoring your situation. I will stay in touch with Standard Liege and I wish you a speedy recovery."

Defour confirmed that he has indeed received a letter from Ferguson, but the young midfielder emphasised that the note was not addressed to him personally. Ferguson approached Standard with the request to pass on the letter and everything was conducted in a proper manner.

Tapping up?

if you don't make it public and approach the club and they pass it on then no, that isn't tapping up.
