FULHAM FIGHT TO KEEP HANGELAND

Roy Hodgson has vowed Fulham will fight "tooth and nail" to keep Brede Hangeland at Craven Cottage next season.

Arsenal and Liverpool are reported to be interested in the Norway captain whose presence in defence has been key to Fulham's push for Europe.

Hangeland has been offered a new contract - his current deal expires in two years - and has had talks with chief executive Alistair Macintosh.

Should they decide to sell, Fulham will make a substantial profit on a player they signed for £2.5million in January last year.

But Hodgson has no intention of offloading the towering 27-year-old centre-back.

"I'm confident we'll keep him in the sense he's happy here and we're very happy with him," said the Fulham boss.

"We're showing our respect for him by offering him a new contract.

"I don't know where he is with that but he's in discussions with the chief executive.

"We're doing everything we can to show how much we appreciate him and how much we want him to stay.

"Of course there are lots of clubs out there. When bigger clubs come in and want to steal your players they put you in a difficult situation.

"But the fact is he's our player and will remain so. We'll fight tooth and nail to keep him."

Hangeland will anchor the defence once again on Saturday when Fulham host Stoke in the Barclays Premier League with victory improving their chances of qualifying for Europe.

A strong finish to the season could secure a place in the Europa League and Hodgson insists his side would be unaffected by expectation or pressure if they reach the competition.

"If it doesn't work out for us, it doesn't work out," he said.

"All the time that sensible attitude is prevalent from the public and the press I don't think it's a problem. The game is a bonus.

"But if people say you have to win the UEFA Cup then it becomes different, but I don't think that would happen at Fulham.

"If we did get into the UEFA Cup then the chairman would welcome that, he'd encourage us, but I don't think he'd cry scandal if we got knocked out."

Fulham could be without Simon Davies for much of their push for Europe with the Wales midfielder suffering from a fractured foot.

Davies will miss Saturday's clash with Stoke and is waiting for the result of a scan that will determine the extent of the injury.

Do you think he´d contribute with some authority to our denfence?

KaiserKolo - April 25, 2009 01:41 PM (GMT)
Decent player but with his lack of pace and our high line and tendency to leave the CBs exposed, he'd get killed here.

Darth Vela - April 25, 2009 01:43 PM (GMT)
Seems to have done alright this year, is he worth taking a punt on? Maybe but he's not worth as much as we'd probably have to pay, we might as well just stick with Senderos if Hangeland costs any more than 4/5m.

Grebbo - April 25, 2009 02:39 PM (GMT)
He's too slow, about as quick as tweety.

bergkampwonderland10 - May 10, 2009 10:01 AM (GMT)
I don't think he's too slow - he's had an outstanding first season and look at the way fulham have turned things around in their defence. Great presence, reads the game well and marshalls a back four effortlessly. We're crying out for a player like him in our squad.

Can you see Arsenal signing a player from Fulham ?

Neither can I.

I was surprised though, but we were desperate at the time.

Are you saying that you think we will sign a Fulham player then ?

fari - May 10, 2009 06:15 PM (GMT)
he is certainly a physical presence, i have not seen him play much nor are am i well acquainted with fulham's defensive tactics but they had to have been doing something right over there...cause lord knows their forwards have not scored much.

Saw him on Saturday at Craven Cottage and he won nearly everthing in the air. Though Carew went against Hughes, Hangeland was impressive and got the assist for Kamara's 2nd.

Still not the kind of player we need, solely due to the lack of pace.

Having seen him alot this season (Fulham season ticket this year) he has been excellent, nullified Stoke's air bombardment, scores a couple, puts in some good passes cutting out the midfield, his positional play in defence is superb, ok he's not the quickest but most CB's aren't much faster or slower and Clichy/Sagna do the same cover job that Pantsil/Koncheski do (and they get forward plenty) I would have him in ahead of Djourou/Senderos/Silbeanhead and would give Gallas a good run for his money, Fulham will certainly struggle if he goes as he gives them the confidence to bomb forward, and mixes it up on corners. I guess the only quesition is if this is just one good season or can he do it again?

This isn't his first season, from what I remember he was bloody awful last season but *meh* that doesn't have much impact...I still don't think he's any better than Senderos for the money we'd pay but I'd be willing to give it a bash, hell he'd at least stop the shambles during set-pieces but not convinced he'd be able to fit into our defensive plan (I call it a defensive plan merely due to the fact our defenders implement it) of keeping a high line and running after anyone that gets through.

And not forgetting the whole Saha hooha.

RE: Hangeland, has been quite impressive this season. However all this talk of lack of pace is concerning. How would he cope converting from Fulham's more organised, sitting defence to our own Keystone Cop, kamikaze style system?

McNamara That Ghost... - May 12, 2009 09:25 AM (GMT)
So the defender we're looking for is faster than a bullet, strong in the air, can organise and won't get caught out of position. Hmm.

Darth Vela - May 12, 2009 11:20 AM (GMT)
Yep, Superman should just about do imo.

In all seriousness though, IF Hangeland is intelligent enough to not get caught out of position too much he could be an asset.

anfield 1989 - May 12, 2009 05:17 PM (GMT)
Been excellent.

TBH he should be in the team of the year. But of course he plays for an unfashionable club like Fulham regardless of them exeeding expectations.

Someone like him is a must for us IMO.

Ach - May 12, 2009 07:23 PM (GMT)
Doesnt matter who we get for 2 reasons

1 - Unless we sort our midfield out, teams will have a free run at our defence

2 - Our defence themselves have to change their mentality on defending. Playing too high up means we get caught with the long ball time and time again. Hangeland is not quick enough to deal with that. Hell Toure is quick enough to deal with it and he has problems himself.

They don't have a sitting defence at home, they do away from home and that usually ends up in getting duffed up.

Have been hoping for this to happen for a while.
Been very very impressed with Hangeland's season, he is the kind of defender we so desperately need - think he'd be excellent for us. Easily one of the best central defenders in the premiership, captain of Norway and good leader.

6ft 4in Hangeland’s value has rocketed this season on the back of solid performances.

Now Wenger believes he is just the man he needs to plug the holes in his leaky defence.

The Gunners chief knows opposite number Roy Hodgson will not easily part with the defender, who still has two years left on his Fulham contract.

But the hard-up Cottagers are in no position to turn down £15m and Wenger has made it clear he sees this issue as a test of Arsenal’s commitment to challenge for major honours next season.

Ach - May 22, 2009 08:38 AM (GMT)
£15m?

No thanks.

Hes done well this season but in our defence where we play a high line, he wont be too good

Grebbo - May 22, 2009 09:27 AM (GMT)
If our scouts are so good why didn't we buy him last year before he went to Fulham?

It'd be crazy to pay Fulham £15m for him. Tall central defenders who can head the ball really aren't that rare - we just don't seem to want to buy them. Hopefully that's now changed.

Silvestre, Diarra and Gallas in recent years.

I can't recall who before them. I'd like to see more ready made Prem players bought in, but the cost is what obviously puts Arsene off.

I rate Hangeland, but 15m? Hmm. It would be a huge gamble on the basis of one season.

All from top clubs though.

I'd like to see Arsene signing some premiership players, Ashley Young, Jagielka, Lescott etc.
