Title: The Open Championship from Turnberry
Description: A spot of Links Golf
Elche - July 15, 2009 09:13 AM (GMT)
Looking forward to the Open.
It returns to one of the most famous course after a 15 year absence. Links Golf is golf at its finest, purest and most difficult.
Favourites...well of course we all know who is favourite.
Harrington has no form at all...but has a punchers chance of winning a hatrick.
No Mickleson because of his wife.
I can see a shock here...a Hunter Mahan, a Anthony Kim or Geoff Oglivy winning it.
But I have a suspicion of seeing Poulter or Casey holding the Claret jug...just a hunch.
The other guy is prone to shooting wild first rounds in the wind at Links courses...you know the guy I mean.
Elche - July 15, 2009 11:21 PM (GMT)

I only take interest in the Golf on the Sunday. Although with cricket and cycling to watch, maybe not this time.
Elche - July 16, 2009 10:12 AM (GMT)
Incredible Tom Watson 5 times Champion is the leader at -4 hes 60.
Tiger slow start but has just gone -1.
Lee Westwood outplaying Tiger at -3, as the two of them are playing together.

It's not happening for him today, as has been the case during most if not all his 1st rounds since coming back from injury.
He seems to need 18 holes to warm up...Problem is hes always playing coming from 8 to 10 back come the final 2 rounds.
He wins them but if only he could open up better, he walk it.

You're definately right about that. He always seems to be playing catch up after that first round.
Elche - July 16, 2009 10:39 AM (GMT)
Great Par save from Tiger.
Hopefully after throwing his toys out, he settles down now.
Elche - July 16, 2009 12:30 PM (GMT)
Tiger struggling with his driver today. Hes all over the place on such a tranquil weather day.
You need to be scoring 66 or 67 today, because the wind can come like a wounded beast...and the scores will get higher.
Tiger +1 and again in thick rough on 17.
Tom Watson clubhouse leader on -5 brilliant stuff.
Elche - July 16, 2009 01:57 PM (GMT)
Woods not too good at +1 tied 79th after his round.
The Leader board is American dominated though at present.
Elche - July 16, 2009 11:35 PM (GMT)
Jimenez... Spa... 64.... -6
Curtis ......US.... 65.... -5
Kuboya... Jpn.... 65.... -5
Watson.... US.... 65.... -5
Senden... Aus ...66.... -4
Villegas... Col... 66 .....-4
Goggin ....Aus ...66 ....-4
Stricker ...US ....66.....-4
Cink ........US ...66.... -4
Quite a mixed Leaderboard, most of the favourites are -1, -2, -3 just off the Leaderboard.
But Tiger is alread 7 back. Like we said this afternoon, hes always out of it Round 1, then tries to surge for the final 3 rounds...a difficult strategy really.
Tom Watson rolled back the years, and it was great to see.
The dangerman on that Leaderboard is Villegas. Hes been the new star on the US PGA tour this year...He could win.
McNamara That Ghost... - July 17, 2009 08:20 AM (GMT)
Nothing else is on until 10 so I am watching this.

Try not to be too upset.
Golf is harder to get into during the 1st two rounds.
The theatre of it begins tomorrow.
Tiger needs a 65 today....or its Bye bye time.
Early news this morning...Poulters going to miss the cut.
McNamara That Ghost... - July 17, 2009 08:30 AM (GMT)
How is it that Turnberry looks like they could have play all day whereas for the cricket in London it looks like being another washout?
adzzzbatch - July 17, 2009 08:53 AM (GMT)
Could today's conditions suit Tiger better?

It could be Tiger seems aggitated.
If Tiger shoots Par 70 then after assessing the first 2 hours of today, he'll be closer than he was last night.
I thought he'd need a low score, but the Bogeys are coming thick on fast.
Jimenez has dropped 3 already....Curtis 5.
adzzzbatch - July 17, 2009 01:31 PM (GMT)
Tiger underway, nearly made a Birdie off a long putt on the 1st hole.
Theologooner - July 17, 2009 01:37 PM (GMT)
I broke my front tooth on the 16th at Turnberry many years ago.

It was a 7 iron. I hit an approach shot to the green, but relaxed my grip a bit too much at the top of my follow-through. The club fell out of my hands, turned as it fell and the head hit me right in the gob.

Guys you need to turn on the Golf...History is being made as we speak.
We are witnessing the single Worst round of Golf in the career of the Worlds's greatest Golfer.
Tiger is +7
He will miss the cut of a Major for the 1st time this decade....To be honest hes not really trying now. I don't think he wants to make the cut because it would ruin his game even more.
Last 5 holes BOGEY - BOGEY - PAR - DOUBLE BOGEY - BOGEY
Astonishing stuff.
Tom Watson birdies a monster put at the last to go - 5 at the age of 60....joint leader in the clubhouse.

Forgot about that but this round has been appalling.
Agreed about Tom Watson, he was my favourite player back in the day.
tigerthesmurf85 - July 17, 2009 06:08 PM (GMT)
I'd rather an Englishman win. Fisher, Westwood etc. or Sergio Garcia. I generally don't want Americans to win but I like Tiger and would love to see Watson win.
tigerthesmurf85 - July 17, 2009 06:20 PM (GMT)
Tiger pars the last. He finished on +5 and the cut is currently at +4. He could still make it if a few players screw up.

What an incredible story it is Tom Watson leader of the Open going into the 3rd round.
If there is a God ....please let Tom Watson win.
It would truely be one of the greatest sporting stories of all time.
Imagine the pride , the honor and the glory of teeing off in the final pair tomorrow for a 60 year old man , who just happens to be 5 time Links Open winner.
Its stuff dreams are made of...
As for Tiger...time to regroup...bad day at the office.

If Ross Fisher is one up on the last tomorrow would he really leave straight away to be by his wife's side (who's having a baby)?
tigerthesmurf85 - July 18, 2009 10:17 PM (GMT)
Watson in the lead on -4 after the third round. Ross Fisher and Mathew Goggin on -3.
Watson could well win this

This is all building up rather nicely.
Hope Watson wins.

I really can't watch, but I have to.
This is historic.
