HARRY REDKNAPP is eyeing a £5million swoop for Bordeaux hitman Marouane Chamakh.

SunSport understands that the Tottenham boss has targeted the French ace who plays as a support striker.

Redknapp has been tracking Chamakh, 24, for a while and expressed his interest in January. But Bordeaux decided not to cash in on one of their prized assets.

North London rivals Arsenal have also watched Chamakh, who wants a move to England.

Redknapp looks certain to offload £16.5m flop Darren Bent this summer — while Roman Pavlyuchenko could also be on his way.

The Spurs chief has also identified Juventus ace Vincenzo Iaquinta as an alternative if he misses out on Chamakh.

Italy striker Iaquinta, 29, will be available for around £8m although he is reluctant to make a move.

BORDEAUX striker Marouane Chamakh has put the Premier League’s big guns on red alert by admitting he wants to play in England.

The Moroccan has notched 10 goals for the club so far this season, who currently lie second in Ligue 1 – two points behind Marseille.

And although the 25-year-old has set his sights on winning the French title this season, he is ready to test himself in a stronger league.

Chamakh said: “My contract ends in one year and I’d like to leave with a French championship title with Bordeaux. If I leave it’ll be abroad or nothing.

“Before talking to the interested clubs, I first want to talk with Bordeaux. It’s my team and where I was trained so that’s normal.

“I am going to give the priority to England. That’s the league I appreciate the most.

“Even if I would give everything to play for teams such as Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal, I don’t dream. I am not crazy.

“If I manage to join a team like these ones, it would be a miracle.

“I am not greedy but I rather aim for a club which sits just below the ’big four’.

“To be clear, a team like Tottenham could interest me but not Sunderland.”

Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool and Newcastle have been linked with Chamakh over the past few months.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confessed that Bordeuax forward Marouane Chamakh is one of the players who has caught his eye this season.

The Gunners have been linked with the aerially adept Moroccan international since several months already, but Wenger downplayed reports that a move is already in the works.

"He is a very good player, but that doesn't mean I have contacted him," Wenger told L'Equipe when questioned about the 25-year-old.

Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have also been linked with Chamakh, whose cracking winner on the weekend ensured that their title fight with Olympique Marseille will go down to the last day.

The 50-time capped Morocco international, who has scored 15 goals for his country, has already made his interest in moving to the Premier League known and recently revealed in an exclusive interview with goal.com that he will definitely leave Bordeaux should they win the title.

The youtube vids of him seem to show misses more than goals...

That's a first for sure.

Brwned - May 24, 2009 10:35 AM (GMT)
Not particularly.

22 goals in 109 games in the last 3 seasons, although the goals he scores are often very important.

Has 14 assists in those games too.

And this has definitely been his best season, with 13 goals and 6 assists in 24 starts.

But yeah, he's very similar to Tevez in a lot of ways.

this guy is African! in an ACON season, no thanks! much rather have Edin Dzeko anyone see his half volley the other day/week?...... he hit that hard!!!

The Bordeaux striker, Marouane Chamakh, scored the only goal that practically guarantees that his team will win the French Ligue 1 title, and then told the world that he will be moving to England next season.

In an interview straight after the game, Chamakh was very clear that he would be moving to the Premiership this summer. “It was definitely my last goal at this ground, because I have expressed a desire to leave Bordeaux. I hope the management will be understanding. As i have just one year left of the term of my contract, I think for the club and for me it would be ideal to leave now.

“There has been very hard in the end, it’s true, because I played have played seven seasons professionally in Bordeaux, after having come through the youth system. I’m from the area, and I wanted to finish with the title, and score the winning goal. I have seen my last great game this week, but I’m really satisfied, even if it will have to wait until next week for us to be champions. I hold many memories of the club, with whom I have known everything, the good times and the bad moments.

He was then asked where he would be playing next season, and he indicated that he would be moving to the Premiership, but wouldn’t say which team he would join.

“I am always interested in the English championship.” he said, ” So why not join the Premier League, even if I have offers from elsewhere. My goal is England.”

Chamakh has been linked with Spurs for a while, but Arsene Wenger has also admitted his admiration of the player. Chamakh said last week that he would love to move to the Emirates.

He said: “I have heard about the Arsenal rumours,”

“But my agent does not want to talk to me about them so that I stay focused until the end of the season.

“I want to play in The Premier League and a club like Arsenal would be a dream. If they were to come calling, I would certainly give them a positive answer. But there is nothing concrete at the moment.”

Hope we don't sign him.

According to a report in the British tabloid The People, Premier League giants Arsenal have identified Blackburn Rovers' Roque Santa Cruz and Bordeaux's Marouane Chamakh as potential replacements for Emmanuel Adebayor.

Gunners manager Arsene Wenger was quoted on Sunday as saying that he believes the Togo international forward will still be plying his trade at the Emirates Stadium in the 2009-10 campaign.

However, the 25-year-old has been linked with a move to Serie A outfit Milan since last summer and it has also been suggested he could move to Chelsea should Carlo Ancelotti arrive at Stamford Bridge.

More recently, Manchester City were reported to be readying a bid in the region of €24 million (£21m) for the 6ft 3in striker.

While Wenger may hope to keep hold of Adebayor, it seems that back-up plans are already being made.

The north London club have been linked with a move for Santa Cruz for some time now, although it is thought they are reluctant to meet his reported €20.5 (£18m) minimum fee release clause.

Wenger recently admitted his admiration for Chamakh, but quickly refuted claims that any official contact has been made about acquiring his services.

However, the 25-year-old Morocco international could prove to be a more attractive proposition for Arsenal as it is thought he will cost around €13.5m (£12m).

Both forwards are expected to leave Blackburn and Bordeaux respectively this summer, however, their destinations are not yet certain.

Chamakh wouldn't replace Adebayor at all, they don't play remotely similarly.

Unless the plan is to play differently.

Brwned - May 25, 2009 10:30 AM (GMT)
Which then seems a bit silly, because there's always going to have to be one striker who plays further ahead than he likes to (either Van Persie or Chamakh), or it just won't work.

Even in a front four with no target man, there always needs to be one player who stretches the defence or else it just gets far too congested in the middle.

Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh has implied that Arsenal have inquired about his services.

The Morocco international has been at the top of his game with French league leaders Bordeaux, and he has been tipped to make the step to Premier League football next season.

Chamakh has affirmed that joining The Gunners is an option for him, even if he is yet to receive a concrete offer from Arsene Wenger.

The French tactician recently hailed Chamakh as an ‘interesting player’, but said that admiring a player does not automatically mean that he is going to launch a bid.

“Indeed, I am leaving,” Chamakh told Le Parisien. “I hope that the [Bordeaux] directors will be comprehensive. Both parts have to find an agreement so I can leave amicably.

“I am in contact with various clubs, including in England, and I am ready to play for a mid-table side first in order to show myself.

“There is also something with Arsenal, but nothing concrete.”

Arsenal's hopes of luring Marouane Chamakh away from Bordeaux appear to have been dashed.

The spring-stepped Moroccan forward, who has been linked with the Gunners for several months already, had previously gone on record as saying that he would definitely leave Bordeaux should they win the league.

Les Girondins did end up clinching the title on the final day, thanks in no small part to Chamakh's contribution, but this has now apparently led to him having a change of heart.

Chamakh told skysports.com, "I will stay here next season, I want to be part of the club.

"I like the team spirit here. It is true I wanted to leave and I want to realise my dream of playing in the Premier League, but I owe something back to Bordeaux.

"I will stay next season. I want to be part of this great team and we are looking forward to next year's Champions League."

Tottenham had also been linked with the 50-time capped Morocco international.

Marouane Chamakh has insisted that moving to The Premier League remains his priority.

The talented striker claimed during Bordeaux’s title celebrations that he wanted to stay in France and sign a new deal with the Ligue 1 champions.

But the Morocco international has now declared that he reacted in the heat of the moment, and that he remains determined to make the step to Premier League football.

Les Girondins have offered Chamakh a two-year contract extension and his agent Fabien Petit refused to comment on his client’s future when contacted by setanta.com.

“I got carried away,” Chamakh told Le Parisien. “I reacted in the heat of the moment because of the emotional atmosphere and I said I am staying not to spoil the party.

“I have not changed my mind. I still want to go, even if I am not closing the door to anything.

“I met some supporters on Monday and they understood me. They told me they would not hold a grudge if I was to leave.”

Arsenal, Tottenham, Fulham and Everton have been linked with the striker.

Respected France Football journalist Philippe Auclair declared on Talksport this afternoon that Bordeaux’s Marouane Chamakh is close to signing for Arsenal.

The Moroccan International striker, who this season played a key part in Bordeaux finally toppling Lyon from the top of Ligue 1, is available for around £7m having reached the final year of his contract.

Powerful in the air yet skillful on the ground, Chamakh is an obvious candidate to replace Emmanuel Adebayor, should the Togolese be moved on this summer.
