Title: Patrick Vieira
Description: Worth a go
papalovesjose - July 29, 2009 04:07 PM (GMT)
I'm told Wrighty on TalkSport claims PV may be coming back on a pay-as-you-play type deal. I think personally this would be great - a year (or 2) may be all we need to reap the benefits of JET and Coquelin from the ressies - and if they are gonna learn from somebody, it might as well be the best!
Thoughts?
fari - July 29, 2009 04:48 PM (GMT)
he might as well come back as a coach b/c the pace of the epl has passed him by. look how out of his depth he looked vs the mancs in the CL last season. the little i saw of him vs milan in the friendly showed a much slower paddy v. with motta added to the inter squad this is the beginning of the end for patrick.
Toure de Emirates - July 29, 2009 04:56 PM (GMT)
Might be a bit past it now, but i'd rather he was here on a pay as you play than at Spurs.
Marc Overmars - July 29, 2009 05:44 PM (GMT)
That would really signal our intent by going for a has been.
No thanks.
dannyfishcharge - July 29, 2009 06:08 PM (GMT)
If he's legs have gone a bit (compared to when he was here first time) he could do a DM holding role very well - not needing him to attack.
Grebbo - July 29, 2009 06:12 PM (GMT)
I can't say I've really watched him since he left us. Probabaly best not to come back as it never usually works out well.
Bubba the Gunner - July 29, 2009 06:33 PM (GMT)
Doubt Wenger has the ability to swollow his pride and take him back.
Clearly Wenger got it wrong letting Paddy go. We havent won ANYTHING without PV4 and he won the Italian League with both clubs he went to.
Perhaps he could kick Diabys arse and make him play better.
Maxzimus - July 29, 2009 08:00 PM (GMT)
Sellin Vieira at the time he did for the price he did without having a quality replacement lined-up was the worst decision of his entire managerial career.
To be honest he's never managed to recover from it so far. Vieira is getting on a bit but he's still better than anything we have and still a real leader.

Not true, at the time I recall was everyone was very happy for us to sign Baptista. The following year obviously every one changed their minds on him, but at the time people spat feathers that we never signed him as Paddy's replacement. He was lorded as being the perfect replacement, the board were slagged mercifeslly for not pulling it off. In hindsight they were then slagged off for then gettin him on loan. Ah hindsight, a wonderful thing

I was never happy we sold Vieira and felt it was a shocking bit of business to sell one of the best midfielders in the world for such a small fee.
As for Baptista all we knew was he scored goals, noone actually knew much about him and had we we would have warned Wenger against signing him.
It's laughable that AW saw him as an able replacement to be honest.
bergstar - July 29, 2009 08:09 PM (GMT)
Well I recall over optimism on this board that the beast wa going to be a perfect replacement.
I think many of us realised they were chalk & cheese in the way they played

I think people just assumed AW knew, some were saying he was tough and got goals, those were the "Wenger knows" years don't forget, people have got more clued up now after 4 years of drought and errors.

Indeed the 'AKB' mob, don't you just love them. Arsenal FC was created in 1996 according to some !
Jesus @ the Emirates - July 30, 2009 12:09 AM (GMT)
No way! Wrighty may be an arsenal legend but he talks some utter shit!
Paddy is past it, coaching yes but playing in the first team now? not a bloody chance.
Gooner in Nipon - July 30, 2009 02:07 AM (GMT)
just a rumour! I can't see coming to us but I also can't see him going to the spuds!
seeing out his playing days will probably take place in France
but saying that it wouldn't be so bad to see him back with us but if the future is where AW has his sights, bringing Paddy back is not the best move unless he was to act as a mentor!
what is not in doubt is that AW does need to make a move before the start of the season!
with the departures a player in all 3 main departments is needed and while we are at it..lets get a keeper too! :jumpnana:
hymppi - July 30, 2009 06:21 AM (GMT)
some coaching role, that's the only way i'd have him back.
goonerravs - July 30, 2009 07:59 AM (GMT)
He was a great player in his peak!!! However what a FANTASTIC statement AFC would make by selling ady, toure, eboue and senderos cash in 55 million quid and buy in 1 central def and patrick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DOOMED springs to mind! Are we really just going to swallow the cash into the stadium debt or go out and buy a DM and squad players???? :banghead:

Yep I agree - have him just sitting in front of the back four smashing people at every opportunity and then giving a simple pass for one of the younger fresher players to work their magic!! We would certainly have a leader back and would not be bullied! He could even give us the odd surging run like the old days - just not too many so he does not get worn out!!
ISV - July 30, 2009 08:28 AM (GMT)
pay as u play, does that mean he'll only play 6 league games (utd chelsea and scousers) and the CL games. Hey why not. He hasnt got the legs for 50+ matches but 1 every other week might suit him fine. Reads the game well and can boss the game as a DM, yes its going back but him and Fabregas have played together.
I think its all about winning things, otherwise the big names will go next season, if Vieira can add his experience and teach the youngsters it'll be brilliant for Arsenal in the end.
Its not like PV4 needs the money. but 100k per game and he plays 20 matches is still 2 mill..
Jesus @ the Emirates - July 30, 2009 08:35 AM (GMT)
You guys, take off the rose tinted glasses. Paddy hasnt got it in him anymore, he would be demolished in the prem nowadays, strikers running past him left, right and centre.
He isnt the same player he was 6 years ago.
Alias - July 30, 2009 08:38 AM (GMT)
I'd take a Vieira corpse to start over Denilson and Diaby..
Justhandguns - July 30, 2009 08:44 AM (GMT)
So Vieira is doing a Michael Schumacher return? :scarf:

Maybe we should give Alan smith a call while were at it, we need a striker to replace Ade
FF4 - July 30, 2009 09:10 AM (GMT)
I'd welcome him back with open arms!
On a pay as you play deal I cant see where we'd be going wrong, he wouldn't exactly make us worse, would he?
Not sure how Cesc would feel about it though.

Yes he would because he isnt the same player anymore.
The only thing he could do is coach the current CM that we have. Playing him in the first team is out.

Der_Kaiser - July 30, 2009 01:18 PM (GMT)
Read a few Inter forums and they all hate him. They want him sold, think he's a mercenary for wanting a €1.1m pay-off from Inter (he's on massive wages) for the remainder of his contract, and that he's made of glass. He's like their Rosicky, except that he's shit now.
He wants regular football for South Africa 2010, and he won't get it at Arsenal IMO. He'd be good for us in a motivational capacity and in terms of leadership but on the pitch he'd get embarrassed. Pay as you play deal with some coaching role is something I'd like.

Although for emotional reasons, I still think he might have a bit of fuel left for one killer season for us. Hope its true.
Seymour Butts - July 30, 2009 03:49 PM (GMT)
Interestingly enough when Wenger was quizzed on the Viera rumour he refused to comment!
Ach - July 30, 2009 04:47 PM (GMT)
Most importantly, how good is he on PES?
Jens' Face - July 30, 2009 04:48 PM (GMT)
I'm coming round to the idea :good:
bergstar - July 30, 2009 04:56 PM (GMT)
The pro's; Maybe, more than likely he can do a decent job like Davids did for Spurs a few years back, and as Giggs/Scoles do for Utd. He'd be great to have around the place, passing on his experience, winning mentatlity and maybe nurturing Diaby and moulding him into the player he should be.
The cons, he embarrases himself. Would it also be an admission from Wenger that he has failed to replace the guy in the years he's been away. Bringing back a guy 4 years after you thought he'd lost something isn't exactly a ringing endorsement for the current mob.
All in all, I'd say Im 'Neutral' about it all !
