This is a very possible dress rehersal for the CL qualifier. I suspect thats why the teams that are taking part have been chosen.

Tomas Rosicky is set to play at Emirates Stadium this weekend for the first time since January 2008.

The Czech midfielder featured against Barnet in mid-July after recovering from a troublesome injury to his hamstring tendon. But only an appearance on his home ground will fully complete his comeback. That is set to happen on Saturday at the Emirates Cup.

Gael Clichy is also in line to play his first game of pre-season but Theo Walcott, Kieran Gibbs and Abou Diaby will all miss out.

“Gael Clichy and Tomas Rosicky will play but Abou Diaby will not be available,” said Arsène Wenger at his pre-tournament press conference on Friday. “He should play at Valencia because he has a little knee problem.

“Theo Walcott and Kieran Gibbs are not available because they have only had four days of training.”

Nice. Rosicky'll probably get a warm welcome back.

Syn - July 31, 2009 08:36 PM (GMT)
Any idea what type of teams we should be expecting tommorow?

I take it the kids are getting a run out tommorow.

Are Athletico, Rangers etc. likely to play strong teams?

(I realise it's pointless asking here because this board is full of gooners spuds but I'll take my chances)

On the eve of the third Emirates Cup, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that the competition should carry on every year because the calibre of the participating teams is unparalleled in Europe.

In previous seasons, teams such as Inter, Real Madrid and Juventus have taken part in the Emirates Cup. This year, annual hosts Arsenal will be pitting themselves against Atletico Madrid and Rangers, while Paris St. Germain are also taking part.

Talking to Arsenal's official website, Wenger said: "I would love it for the Emirates Cup to last forever.

"It's good to know that in every pre-season we would have this kind of tournament.

"I look around and don't see any other tournament of the same calibre."

On Saturday Arsenal play Atletico Madrid at 16:15, after Rangers tackle PSG. Then on Sunday Arsenal take on Rangers and PSG meet Atletico.

This years line up is not as good (thus why it's not sold out), though I love watching Atletico.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger looks set to rest winger Theo Walcott for the Emirates Cup tournament.

Walcott was heavily involved in the England Under-21 squad that reached the final of the European U-21 Championships this summer.

Wenger was unhappy with the involvement of the 20-year-old in the Young Lion's plans and is now likely to give the winger a much-needed break before the start of the Premier League season.

"I was not in fairness a supporter of his experience with the U-21s for one simple reason: the youth teams are there to promote the players into the first team and once they are there, especially at national level, I don't see why they go back again to the U-21s," Wenger said, according to Sky Sports News.

"The target is not to promote the players from the first team to the second team, they are supposed to be promoted from the second team to the first team."

Arsenal kick off the pre-season competition today against Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid.

Rest him? He hasnt had a game for over a month.

Was looking forward to seeing him play

Was he only on loan at Benfica? I thought he signed permanently.

Marc Overmars - August 1, 2009 11:54 AM (GMT)
Yeah he was on loan.

Jose Antonio Reyes has no regrets about leaving Arsenal, whom he claims are still one of the "strongest teams in Europe".

The Atletico Madrid forward will take on his old side in the Emirates Cup this weekend.

Reyes, 25, joined the Gunners from Seville four years ago in a deal which could have eventually cost a club-record £17million.

However, the Spaniard - who won the FA Cup in 2005 and played in the Champions League final the following season - became frustrated at a perceived lack of first-team opportunities and moved on loan to Real Madrid before signing permanently with their city rivals.

Reyes, who had a spell at Benfica, said: "I have no regrets about leaving Arsenal.

"I took that decision because obviously I thought it was going to be best for my career.

"I had a good time here, I won some trophies with this team and I think they deserve all the credit they get.

"Any player wants to play for Arsenal, they have a great team in England and one of the strongest team in Europe."

Reyes added: "Arsenal have lost a couple of important players, but they have an extraordinary team, a young team, and they are going to develop."

Atletico could face the Gunners in a play-off for the Champions League next month.

Diaby injured again!

so much for his work in france this summer

McNamara That Ghost... - August 1, 2009 12:56 PM (GMT)
Rangers: Alexander, Whittaker, Bougherra, Weir, Papac, McCulloc, Davis, Mendes, Novo, Lafferty Miller.

PSG: Coupet, Jallet, Bourillon, Sakho, Sankhare, Maurice, Makelele, Chantome, Rothen, Erding, Arnaud.

Maestro - August 1, 2009 12:59 PM (GMT)
Let's have a look at this Sahko bloke

Ach - August 1, 2009 01:12 PM (GMT)
Sakho is the only reason to watch this game.

Emirates Cup really failed to attract the big guns this year.

Ach - August 1, 2009 01:19 PM (GMT)
Bloody hell Rangers have a piss poor team.

Erding is PSGs big signing this summer.

Big reputation in Turkey.

McNamara That Ghost... - August 1, 2009 01:24 PM (GMT)
Wish I hadn't turned over form Sky Sports 1 talking about a future Test cricket world tourney to be honest.

McNamara That Ghost... - August 1, 2009 01:32 PM (GMT)
The shots on target stat might work in our favour after all.

McNamara That Ghost... - August 1, 2009 01:36 PM (GMT)
Very nearly 0-1 PSG. Arnaud shot just wide.

Czech Out Rosicky - August 1, 2009 01:49 PM (GMT)
personally last year didnt do much for arsenal IMO so anyone think the lower teams have been invited to make it more fun for Arsenal fans when watching their own team?

McNamara That Ghost... - August 1, 2009 01:49 PM (GMT)
Half time. 0-0.

Ach - August 1, 2009 01:50 PM (GMT)
Erding looped a shot on to the top of the net.

Other than that, nothing.

No shots on target at all.
