Title: RIP Sir Bobby Robson

Dentonboy - July 31, 2009 09:25 AM (GMT)
Football legend - fantastic work abroad; PSV and Barcelona, as well as at home.

Treated rather poorly by Newcastle (Karma...) and will be missed by football fans I am sure.

RIP Sir.

:upset:

Told this a few times on here, but...

Was working in Hammersmith in the summer of '97.
Our first game of the season was a Monday evening game vs Coventry.
I decided to stay at work a bit late and go straight to the game as it's straight down the Piccadilly Line, wasn't really worth going home.

Got on the train, sat down and there opposite me was....Bobby Robson!
I said to him "You're Bobby Robson!"
He concured.
I asked him if he was still at Barcalona, which he was in those days, and he said he was. I left him alone after that, I didn't want to bother him too much - people like that must get bothered all the time.
He was going to the game and just went in on the Tube like any other fan.

As the train filled up other people obviously recognised him but no-one else bothered him too much.
We got off the train and as we left the station I said to him
"It was nice to meet you"
He shook my hand and said "good luck, son" :)

I still give him and his good luck wishes partial credit for us doing the double in the ensuing season!

Lovely bloke. Real gentlemen. He'll be missed throughout the game.

As a Toon fan who sometimes post on here to catch up with old Beeb 606 posters, just like to say it's good to see all your post's for Sir Bobby.

Letters experience sums Bobby up, a lovely man and a great manager, will be sadly missed by all who his life touched.

R.I.P. Sir Bobby

Little Miss Gooner - July 31, 2009 10:43 AM (GMT)
Former England, Newcastle United and Ipswich Town manager Sir Bobby Robson has died at the age of 76.

Robson was one of the most respected and well-liked figures in the football world and his managerial career took in further spells with PSV Eindhoven, Sporting Lisbon, Porto and Barcelona.

He had been battling cancer for the past 15 years and set up the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation to help with the earlier detection and treatment of the disease.

Robson's final public appearance came at St James' Park on Sunday when tens of thousands of fans turned out on Tyneside to support a charity match to raise funds for his foundation.

Robson was capped 20 times by his country and was a hugely-popular player during his time with Fulham and West Bromwich Albion.

He took England to the brink of the World Cup final during Italia 90 only to see their hopes dashed in a dramatic penalty shoot-out defeat by West Germany in the semi-finals.

A statement issued on behalf of his family read: "It is with great sadness that it has been announced today that Sir Bobby Robson has lost his long and courageous battle with cancer.

"He died very peacefully this morning at his home in County Durham with his wife and family beside him.

"Sir Bobby's funeral will be private and for family members only.

"A thanksgiving service in celebration of Sir Bobby's life will be held at a later date for his many friends and colleagues.

"Lady Robson and the family would very much appreciate it if their privacy could be respected at this difficult time."

Robson enjoyed great success during his time as manager of Ipswich, guiding the Portman Road club to the 1978 FA Cup and Uefa Cup glory in 1981 and twice securing runners-up spot in the league.

Following his departure from the England post after Italia 90, he guided PSV to the Eredivisie title in the 1991/1992 season.

Further silverware was to follow in Portugal as Porto clinched the league title, Portuguese Cup and Super Cup during his tenure at the helm.

And Barcelona were crowned Spanish Cup and Spanish Super Cup winners while Robson was in charge at Camp Nou.

His five-year spell in the dugout at his beloved Newcastle saw the most successful recent spell in the club's history as he guided the Magpies to three top-five Premier League finishes and saw them play in the UEFA Champions League.

(wished they'd left out the 'Lady' Robson bit, Bob was a man of the people)

I am amazed it took so long for us to get this thread up and running.

Great ambassador for the game. Endless enthusiasm. Great personality. Great man.

Admired by so many supporters of so many cluns and countries.

He will be sadly missed.

RIP

RIP Sir Bobby. A true gent and ambassador of the game.

Rors - August 1, 2009 11:53 AM (GMT)
A good point was made on Fivelive last night that Sir Bobby was one of the few remaining links to the true denizens of the mangerial game (Stein, Busby, Shankly etc). Not many of them left now.

In addition to the humility for which he is rightly credited, can't be forgotten he was never afraid to make the tough decisions either (having George Burley make George Best on his debut in 1973, Mark Wright as sweeper in 1990, dropping Shearer in 2004 for the game against us).

AND should never have had his goal against Brazil in 1958 disallowed.

Programme on BBC One tonight at 10:40.

McNamara That Ghost... - August 1, 2009 12:13 PM (GMT)
I saw the one on Sky Sports but it was cobbled together too quickly really, from stuff previously said about him rather than being an actual tribute show as such. Or at least, that is how it came across.

Get Bendtner - August 1, 2009 02:56 PM (GMT)
Other than when England spanked Holland 4-1 at Euro 96 I don't think I ever saw England play better than under Bobby Robson.

He was a legend in the game and more importantly you can just tell he was a genuinely nice guy who made wherever he went just that little bit nicer.

Fantastic manager and a great person.

RIP :rose:

JackTheLad19 - August 1, 2009 04:31 PM (GMT)
It's definitely quite something when absolutely no one has a bad word to say about you with football being as it is. Often IMO the tributes are cliched and exaggerated but Robson merits it thinking about it. Great guy.
