BARCELONA will bid £45million to tempt Arsenal into selling Cesc Fabregas — but only have six days to complete the deal. The Spaniards have made the 21-year-old their No1 transfer target but must finalise the agreement before the Gunners face Celtic in the Champions League play-off first leg on Tuesday. The Nou Camp side hope to tempt Arsene Wenger into selling his captain later this week in order to prevent him from being cup-tied. Reports in Spain claim Fabregas would be interested in the idea of returning to the club he left in 2003 if Arsenal can be persuaded to let him leave. But Barca face a race against time to complete their audacious swoop and will pull out of the move altogether if the midfielder plays against Celtic. Arsenal will demand the huge fee for Fabregas in an attempt to scare off the Spanish Treble winners, but that has not stopped Barcelona captain Xavi calling for the club to sign his compatriot. Xavi said: "He's a football player who can give us the momentum we need. "He's a total footballer, grew up in Barca and has the profile of a Barca player."

I hate sensationalised stories that are not dealing with reality. Xiki Begiristain, Barca's Sporting Director said live on Spanish TV Yesterday,,,and because people ignored it, I'll repeat it. ' Yes Cesc would interest us. No there is no Operation to sign him. If Arsenal indicated they wanted to sell, then we would be interested if the Price is right, but will not pay over the natural amount needed to sign him' How much would that be? ' A reporter asked. ' Oh about 25 million euros ' Xiki replied with a smile. That was from the horses mouth, Most people in Spain interpreted that Barca were not exactly looking to sign him, but if Arsenal gave them the green light, then they would try to sign him, but for much less than we would want. But if you want to sensationlize the story for your own enjoyment....feel free. Cesc bench warming during World Cup year will not get him a place in the team. Barca wanting to pay 25 million, and us wanting 45 million indicates.....a no story. Barca have no money, it all went on Ibra...that was quoted by Laporta.

Cesc Fabregas has revealed that he wondered if Arsenal had trouble making up their minds whether or not to sign him after being told how many of his games for Barcelona they had watched. The Catalan playmaker is the subject of current speculation about a return to Camp Nou, but he has reflected on the move that took him away from his boyhood club to London six years ago. Arsenal ensured that they were signing the player they wanted with so many scouting missions, but it was only when Arsene Wenger stepped in that the young Fabregas was sure that he had made the right move. “The Spanish scout told me after Arsenal signed me that they had come to see me 44 times," he told Gunners' club members recently. "I thought '44 times? They aren’t very sure about me!' “But when I came here to talk with the boss, he was the one that really came to talk to me. "He cut his holiday short to come and see me as a 16-year-old. For me, that was a big honour.”

Barcelona are taking two quite different approaches in their quest to sign Cesc Fabregas from Arsenal this summer, if the Catalan press are to be believed. The Gunners' midfielder could make a dramatic return to Camp Nou if the Blaugrana went down the same route as Real Madrid and splashed the cash after being told his asking price is €45 million. Barca's technical secretary, Txiki Begiristain, has made it clear that they believe a fee of around €30 million is more realistic for a player who walked out on the club six seasons ago. With that route unlikely to bring any results, Sport state that Barca could persuade Fabregas to hand in a transfer request, something that is not recognised in Spain. The daily sports paper remind readers that in England the request takes an official form as a document that is given to the club, which was the way that Xabi Alonso went to secure his move to Real Madrid. One problem, Sport point out, is that the request is not always accepted, but frequently becomes public knowledge and that would harm Fabregas' standing at the Emirates. El Mundo Deportivo think that there could be a less disruptive way of pushing a move forward and that is by using the player's agent, Darren Dein, to persuade Arsenal to sell. The Fabregas family have all assented to the transfer, with Cesc's father Francesc representing him, while Dein also thinks that the deal could be a good one all round. Manager Arsene Wenger is seen as the main stumbling block as he is loth to allow the player whom he has fashioned into the Gunners' captain to leave at any price. Dein, son of former Arsenal director David Dein, has held talks with Barca and is now set to talk to the English club, Sport add.

There have been reports linking Cesc Fabregas with a transfer to Barcelona after the Catalan club pubicly admitted their desire to have the 22-year-old back in their ranks. But the player's father, Francesc Fabregas, has now guaranteed the Spain international is fully committed to the Gunners. "Honestly, I think this signing by Barca will not be produced," he told COM Radio. "Evidently, the football world is crazy and you never know, but today I think Cesc will stay at Arsenal. He is super committed to Arsenal and he is really eager to do things there. "If the day comes [when Cesc moves to Barcelona] then it will come, but as a professional and out of respect for Arsenal, where he has always been very well treated, he cannot say anything about these rumours." Nevertheless, Francesc admitted that his son has strong feelings for Barcelona, the club he left in 2003 for the North London outfit. "Cesc is Catalan and a cule, and obviously he takes that with him all the time, but he gives it all for Arsenal, regardless of that feeling," he noted.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has claimed that there “is no chance” that he will sell influential midfielder Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona. Rumours have been rife throughout the summer that Fabregas may be tempted by a move back to Spain and the club where he started his career. Italian giants Milan have also been strongly linked with a move for the Arsenal captain, who scored three Premier League goals last season. The Gunners will be vying to win their first trophy in four years over the next nine months, and Wenger is adamant that he will not be allowing any more key players to leave. "Do you really think we sell our players one day before the championship starts, players who are basic players of the team? There is no chance," the French coach told the Press Association. "You cannot stop people from having a lot of creative imagination during their sleepless nights, but that does not mean we will do it." Wenger himself has resisted the advances of the likes of Real Madrid in the past, and the Gunners boss has stated that he is a firm believer in the need to honour a contract. "I believe that in life you are committed to clubs with contracts, and in no contract is the colour of your blood described," he added, referring to Fabregas and the speculation linking him with a move to Spain. "I am more committed than ever to my club, not only this season, but since I have arrived here. "We are at the beginning of a new season now, and it is important that everybody focuses - me, Fabregas, everybody else - just on being successful for the club we love, and the best way we can do that is to do well." Arsenal begin their Premier League campaign at Goodison Park against Everton on Saturday.

Arsene Wenger showed how relaxed he is about Barcelona's persistent pursuit of his captain, Cesc Fabregas, by jokingly commenting to journalists that if the Catalan giants don't give up their Cesc chase, he will mount a bid for Barca's global superstar, Lionel Messi. The point Wenger was making is that the likelihood of midfielder Fabregas moving to Camp Nou is about as distant as that of Messi signing for Arsenal. And he underlined it by insisting that there was ‘no chance’ the 22-year-old former Barca youth product would leave the Emirates any time soon - in the same way that it would be futile for the Gunners to try prising Argentine phenomenon Messi, also 22, from Barcelona. Messi has a €150 million (£130m) buy-out clause in his Barca contract. "I have made a bid for Messi and nobody speaks about it," quipped Wenger, according to the Daily Mail. "It is the same [as the situation with Cesc]. "How can people think we will sell Fabregas now, one day before the championship starts? We are not in a weak financial position, we don’t need to sell anybody. "He is committed to the club and he has told me that. We cannot master the noises coming out of Spain. "This is his sixth year [at Arsenal]. What he wants is to win trophies for the club." Turning to the season that kicks off for the Gunners at Everton on Saturday, Wenger stated his belief that Arsenal will be Premier League title contenders, saying, "At the start we race for the top spot. After, the minimal target is the top four but you don’t start the season thinking like that. "Maybe some of our fans have the fear we will drop out of the top four. That’s guided by fear, not objective assessment of our performances." Referring to last season's poor start, Wenger added, "After 14 games we had lost five and that was too many. "At the moment, nobody looks at us as a potential fighter for the championship. I believe we have to keep serene, not put unneeded pressure on our shoulders and focus on how we want to play."

Barcelona have agreed a deal with Arsenal to sign Cesc Fabregas if the Gunners do not qualify for the Champions League group stage, but will definitely sign him next summer, according to a report. The two clubs held lengthy talks and reached the agreement that would see the London side's captain move back to the Blaugrana should Celtic triumph in the two-legged European showdown. That has now been complicated by Arsenal's 2-0 win at Parkhead on Tuesday evening, a game in which Fabregas stood out and showed no signs of the agreement affecting his play. With the English outfit now on the verge of making it into the draw for the group stages on August 27 in Monaco, Barca will have to wait until next summer to sign the Spain star, El Mundo Deportivo state. Part of the deal was that should Arsenal make it past Celtic, then there would be no more talks about the midfielder and he would move without any problems at the end of the 2009-10 season. A fee of around €35 million has also been agreed upon and means that president Joan Laporta can look ahead to the Catalan club's leadership elections with confidence. Fabregas could have become one of the bargaining chips offered up by presidential candidates, as is commonplace in Spanish football, but with an alleged agreement in place Laporta's rivals will have to look elsewhere.

ARENE WENGER says that outrageous transfer claims by Spanish clubs are damaging football. The Arsenal boss cannot understand why wannabe club officials in Spain are allowed to talk about potential summer signings in order to win their elections. A power struggle at Barcelona between president Joan Laporta and his former No 2 Sandro Rosell has seen both men targeting Gunners midfield star Cesc Fabregas as their favoured big-name signing. Asked about how much worth there was in these claims, Wenger said: "Apart from giving articles to newspapers, all the rest is rubbish. "It doesn't help football, it doesn't help people to focus on their job. "Sometimes it is quite destabilising. "The way that Spanish clubs are run is more political than sport orientated. "How much does that harm other clubs? It's difficult to measure, but it doesn't help other clubs. "When somebody who has no chance to be elected next year as a president can announce any name, what can you do against him? Nothing. "Does that help other clubs? Certainly not. "The only thing I can say is the day I will agree to sell a player one year in advance, I will not be in this job any more."
