Title: Van Der Vaart

Rampant Arsenal eye £6m Rafael van der Vaart as Real Madrid midfielder reveals Premier League dream

Arsene Wenger saw his Arsenal side produce a stunning riposte to doubters with a 6-1 win at Everton and then prepared to spend a portion of the £38million raised in the transfer market after Real Madrid's Rafael van der Vaart revealed he hopes to move to the Premier League.

Goals from Denilson, debutant Thomas Vermaelen, William Gallas, Cesc Fabregas (2) and Eduardo saw Wenger's side romp to victory on the first day of the season as title rivals Chelsea recorded a last-gasp 2-1 win over Hull and Manchester City won 2-0 at Blackburn.

Despite Arsenal's dazzling start, Wenger is considering strengthening the squad with 26-year-old midfielder Van der Vaart, who is available for just £6m after becoming involved in a bitter dispute with Real.

Wenger has allowed Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure to leave for £38m and has been criticised for spending only £8m on centre-half Vermaelen.

Van der Vaart would be a welcome addition, with Tomas Rosicky and Samir Nasri injured, and yesterday the Dutchman said: 'I really want to come to England.

'There are a number of clubs with offers, where I can go in Germany, Spain and Italy. I have also had a request from Martin Jol to go back to Ajax. But none of those options appeal to me. I want to go to the Premier League and I know where I want to play.'

Holland: Van der Vaart scored against England last week

Fabregas, who yesterday dedicated a goal to Espanyol defender Daniel Jarque following his death last week of a heart attack at the age of 26, will also stay put after Arsenal rejected Barcelona's approach for their captain.

Van der Vaart, who scored against England in midweek, has a £60,000-a-week contract until 2013 at Real Madrid but the club are desperate to sell after spending £180m.

The idea of doing business with Real Madrid makes me shudder.

SOLo - August 16, 2009 02:11 AM (GMT)
more likely to be going to united.

Wouldn't mind him here however....

Brwned - August 16, 2009 02:37 AM (GMT)
Not a chance of him going to us.

why not?

Jens' Face - August 16, 2009 02:43 AM (GMT)
It's hard to credit that we'd be in for VdV, even at the pretty amazing price of 6m. There's really no room for him in a 4-3-3 unless Cesc is out. Him and Cesc would be a defensive liability.

And wouldn't we be killing Ramsey?

Even in a 442, we have Theo, Arshavin, Nasri, Rosicky, Wilshere, Eboue and Traore for the wing slots.

SOLo - August 16, 2009 02:54 AM (GMT)
our official formation today was

sanga/gallas/vermaelen/cliche

bendtner/song/denilson
rvp/cesc/arshavin

Has more skill and technical ability than denilson imho and could probably perform better than the RVP of late. But yeah, I'd rather have Marouane Chamakh who has a much better goal record and workrate.

Jens' Face - August 16, 2009 02:56 AM (GMT)
okay but that's officially wacko.

we all know Cesc was in midfield and Bendy was the right attacker. Ask Leighton Baines where Bendy was playing.

SOLo - August 16, 2009 03:10 AM (GMT)
Bendtner was never anywhere near the box, he was picking up the ball much further down the pitch than usual, and much further out wide than at any point last season.

And do you think cesc running box to box for both of his goals was just incidental? Either-way, 4 of those midfield/attacking positions are more or less interchangeable and fluid throughout the match.

Marc Overmars - August 16, 2009 09:24 AM (GMT)
6m eh. Not bad, not bad.

Welshgooner - August 16, 2009 09:45 AM (GMT)
If this happens it will only confirm that Cesc is definitely going to Barca - either in Jan or next season.

JackTheLad19 - August 16, 2009 09:48 AM (GMT)
You could probably pick him up for a tenner on the last day of the window but I dont think we really need a player of his type, we still have a few players to return in his positions.

Alias - August 16, 2009 10:10 AM (GMT)
I'd take him in a heart beat. With Rosicky and Walcott perminantly injured and if Cesc got injured he'd be a great option.

Harland - August 16, 2009 12:01 PM (GMT)
we need a DM.

But I wouldn't mind VDV as well.

gunnersouth - August 16, 2009 12:04 PM (GMT)
I always laugh at these types of rumours, there is no where in that article that says either we're interested in him or Real Madrid really want to sell, simply he'd like to move to the PL, so how on earth can that rag report this as we're moving for him is absolute tosh.

Jack Bauer - August 16, 2009 02:23 PM (GMT)
Would love him at that price but we'd have too many players, especially if Rosicky recovers.

Nasri, Arshavin, RVP, Rosicky, Theo all can do a fantastic job in that position. If we do get him it means the end of Rosicky.

Never. Going. To. Happen.

Relying on Rosicky to be fit is just stupid.

:banghead: rosicky would actually have to start for it to end for him!

I think I've said this somewhere before but VDV would flop horrifically in the Premiership.

Whenever I've seen him he's wanted too much time on the ball, hasn't shown much fight at all and is about as strong as a bluebottle with leprosy, if he ever comes to the Premiership and performs as anything other than a bit-part player I will be deeply shocked. Does have a cracking left foot though, it would mostly be a waste of 6m though.

Grebbo - August 18, 2009 09:24 AM (GMT)
Would be a very odd signing. We've got loads of players just like him but better. We don't need more attacking midfielders

Right and I can imagine you would have said the same about Bergkamp all those years ago.

Van der Vaart is a class player give me him over Shmack any day, IMO he wouldn't fail at all he's no Reyes. It amazes me that Denilson isn't too weak in your opinion and yet Van der Vaart is...did you say the same about Arshavin?

Van Der Vaart would flop in the EPL. Great technique and a quality player but as DV said, he wants too much time on the ball, wouldn't be up for the physical battle etc. In the latter case, he's exactly like Reyes.

It's wrong of you to judge DV's opinion by saying he would have thought the same of Bergkamp or Arshavin. Especially when you rated Aliadiere. No-one's perfect in their views on a player who has just been signed. I'm quite sure you were judging Vermaelen before he kicked a ball.

Denilson is no-where near Van Der Vaart technically but physically he is up for the challenge. Hence he's a better fit for the EPL.

Ach - August 18, 2009 09:58 AM (GMT)
Id love VDV here.

Until hes actually played here, no one knows if he will flop or not same as any player

Marc Overmars - August 18, 2009 10:01 AM (GMT)
Wouldn't mind him here at all.

I'd question the need for another attacking/creative midfielder though when we have pressing issues elsewhere.

Sorry but Reyes had no guts at all one tackle and that was it. Van der Vaart has played in Germany and succeeded there and it's much more physical than Spain.

As for Denilson..have you seen him...he's tiny I'm sorry but you're comment is laughable he's not built for the English game a tall. As for Vermaelen I clearly stated many times he's unproven but we'll see how he does.

As for Aliadiere that's one player who suffered horrendous injuries which affected him a lot no doubt about that, in his earlier days he's looked a real talent. Moreover he was a kid not a proven International like VDV, Berkamp etc.

We can't KNOW but I'm pretty damn sure he would flop here, same as I don't KNOW but I'm pretty sure that a snowboarding business in Hell would go under.

Also @ Zimm:

I thought there was a chance Arshy wasn't up to the Premiership due to his size but whenever you watch him you can tell he's a determined little bugger, something I don't pick up when I watch VDV.

Denilson is stronger than him and wants a lot less time on the ball but yeah, I thought Denilson was maybe a little too weak in places last year (more mentally than physically, though that is kinda linked).

Both of them have an attitude to actually try, whereas whenever I've seen VDV he's been, for want of a better word, 'prissy' about everything and especially when people want to make it more physical. If he were to come and be a success, it'd be great because he is incredibly talented but I just can't see it.

Maxzimus - August 18, 2009 12:36 PM (GMT)
Fair enough, just think Dutch players tend to do well in England and he's a definite talent.

Real Madrid playmaker Rafael van der Vaart is the subject of interest from Liverpool and Arsenal as his Real Madrid career looks to end.

A fire sale has been expected at The Bernabeu ever since the multi-world-record-breaking transfers of Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Fellow Dutchman Wesley Sneijder is expected to complete a £15 million move to Inter as the Spanish giants try to recoup some of their huge financial outlay this summer.

Yesterday reports in Sport claimed that Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is on the verge of offering Real Madrid €11.5m for the highly-rated midfielder.

However today provided fresh speculation in The Metro, suggests Arsene Wenger is keen on bringing the Holland international to The Emirates.

The same publication suggests there is still chance of a  return to Holland for family reasons with a switch to Martin Jol's Ajax.

One player who is close to a Real exit is striker Alvaro Negredo however it will not be with Premier League Hull City.

The frontman has decided to stay in Spain after turning down Hull City

The striker made the trip to Humberside for talks with Tigers boss Phil Brown yesterday and now seems set on move to Real Zaragoza.

Marc Overmars - August 20, 2009 12:56 PM (GMT)
I think Liverpool need a player like this more than we do.

JackTheLad19 - August 20, 2009 01:00 PM (GMT)
Liverpool barely have enough for a £3m CB so this would be stretching it.

Think he'd be a great signing for us!
No guarantees with injuries and suspensions to key players like Cesc - if we can get him for 6million it would be brilliant.

Final day signings...
1.Chamakh - 6million
2. Van Der Vaart - 6million
3. Vieira - 3.5million

vieira is past it...plus i think he was either subbed or had to go off yesterday in inter's draw with bari (yes bari who just came back up to serie a). he CANNOT cut it at EPL level any more...please folks, understand that.

vdv would provide creativity, guile and more options, i like him a lot.
