Title: New features at Emirates stadium
Arshavinslittlelegs - August 19, 2009 11:09 PM (GMT)
I've heard that a few changes have been made completed in time for the portsmouth game. This includes the concourse at lower level being adorned with pics of Arsenal greats, the outer grey concrete being adorned with a rear view pic of arsenal legends interlocking arms. Plus I just switched on Arsenal TV online to see the emirates pitch live and there seems to be a big cannon illustration in the lower tier mid section opposite the tunnel. Looks great!

So nothing of importance then?

Garnish, I'd prefer an additional trophy on the banding :coffee:

Well to be honest the stadium needs these changes. It was too bland before. It would also help if dour people like yourself were not permitted to enter. That way the atmosphere would be better. :good:

Whilst it doesn't really matter in terms of the football side, it matters to some fans who loved highbury and all it's history.
Nice touch if you ask me. Be good to make it more "ours" rather than a big place with not much identity....

Just looked at the cannon on the seats. Looks a bit naff if you ask me.
I won't be able to see it from where I sit.
I'll reserve judgement on the outside murials until I see em. I imagine they'll look tacky.
Free scarf...meh, way too hot for scarfs. It's free flags or nothing for me.

Free-scoring Arsenal aim to give Emirates soul
Alyson Rudd
There can be no better place to take a raw football recruit than the Emirates Stadium, where all tricky questions will be answered. Why do we need scarves in August? To hold above your head. What do I do with my scarf after the match is over? Use it again.
It is easy to mock a club who feel the need to tell their supporters via the match-day programme: “Remember to always bring your scarves back to Emirates Stadium for every match.” Are there really so many soccer ingénues in North London? But in some ways Arsenal have no choice but to accelerate the process of giving their new stadium some atmosphere and history. Highbury used to assist the team, the Emirates has tended to undermine it.
“I believe it’s always an issue when you move stadiums,” Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, said. “When Liverpool move away from Anfield, it will take some time. Arsenal had a natural soul at Highbury because of its history. We have to create history here first by winning titles, but as well by making the place warm, where you feel the history of the club.”
They are calling it “Arsenalisation”. When the term hits the dictionaries, it will probably state that it means the process whereby Arsenal Football Club decorate their bare walls with images depicting iconic moments in the club’s history, hand out free scarves and instruct visitors to feel a deeper affiliation.
This is all slightly embarrassing, given that the team, in their present form, are the most scintillating in the country. Just how spoilt are these fans? Their side score ten goals in the first two league games and still they need freebies.
There was a quite palpable sense around the stadium that putting four goals past Portsmouth was disappointing, considering that they had scored six against Everton the previous Saturday.
Arsenal’s first two goals illustrated why they are in such prolific form. They create space for midfield players to storm forward and shoot. It helps enormously when defenders fail to spot the ruse and Abou Diaby was twice able to time his run and strike unimpeded. Arsenal’s third proved nothing other than William Gallas must have a lucky charm hidden in his socks and the fourth was a perfect example of how selfless the main striker must be for the new system to work. Robin van Persie timed his pass beautifully to the advancing Aaron Ramsey.
After the almost pointless visit of Celtic in the Champions League on Wednesday, Arsenal face Manchester United at Old Trafford. There is a chance they will travel without Cesc Fàbregas, who damaged a hamstring and was replaced at half-time.
The goalless draw between the two at the end of last season was as much about Arsenal’s attempt to regain dignity after United had outclassed them in their Champions League semi-final as it was about United’s title aspirations. Now the canvas has changed and Arsenal are viewed as potential title challengers, but the European defeat still rankles. “It was difficult to swallow, but somewhere it can make us stronger as well,” Wenger said.
Paul Hart, the Portsmouth manager, is also hoping for a slice of the “what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger” philosophy. The club’s protracted takeover should be resolved within days, with Peter Storrie, the chief executive, completing his buyout. But Hart does not expect to be able to make any sort of splash in the market. Instead, he has to hope that he hangs on to the players he has left. It was not a totally abject performance from his team. They scored when only two behind after Manuel Almunia failed to deal with a cross from Nadir Belhadj and Hart felt strongly that Gallas should have been sent off for bringing down John Utaka.
And while the likes of Niko Kranjcar and Sylvain Distin show a definite air of nostalgia for the old days, at least Frédéric Piquionne, on loan from Lyons, looked promising.
David James made a few highly competent saves but suffered bruising on the same knee recently operated upon and will have a scan today.
The Portsmouth fans understand all too well how quickly success becomes history, but no amount of wallowing in recent triumphs will help Hart to turn things around. They need much more than free scarves at Fratton Park, a place where the fans know precisely how to use them.
