Wish them both all the best with the recovery, whether that involves football or not.

Apparently hes going to have his let leg amputated which is devastating if true.

McNamara That Ghost... - August 23, 2009 11:36 AM (GMT)
Think that is coming from the NOTW - well it is the one place I have seen it at least so that might be a bit of exaggeration but it would be fair to say the next 48 hours are indeed pretty critical.

A MAN suspected of trying to murder Premier League footballer Calum Davenport is his sister's boyfriend, The Sun can reveal.

The West Ham defender, 26, was stabbed in both legs early on Saturday at his mum's house.

He was in intensive care last night after the attack which left him lying in a pool of blood outside the home in Bedford. His mum was also injured.

Police arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder in Derby on Saturday.

Sources named him as the boyfriend of Calum's sister Cara - thought to be five months pregnant with the alleged attacker's child.

Cara, 28, has been going out with him for about a year.

The 5am attack came after a "blazing row" in which Calum told Cara - who has a child from a previous relationship - he was concerned about the company she kept.

A family friend told The Sun: "Cara's boyfriend knew Calum would be at his mum's house so he went round there.

"There was a row which then spilled on to the drive and down the street and Calum was stabbed. It was a mess."

The pal added: "There has been a lot of tension in the family over who Cara mixes with."

A friend played down reports that Calum may need to have his legs amputated, saying: "Doctors believe it is still too early to say when or if he will play professionally again.

"But they say he stands a better chance of recovering than most people because he is fit and young."

A Bedford Hospital spokeswoman said dad-of-one Calum's condition was serious but stable.

Eye-witness Alex Wallace, 17, who was walking home, said: "I heard really loud shouting. A woman was howling, crying uncontrollably, and a man was screaming at the top of his voice. He was standing over another man, who was just lying there motionless.

"There was blood everywhere but the man kept punching him in the head. I thought the man was dead. He wasn't moving at all."

Calum's mum Kim Stupple, 50, is recovering from stomach wounds.

She has lived in the semi-detached home, bought by Calum for around £160,000, for about a year.

Ex-England under-21 international Calum lives close by with his wife Zoey and their four-year-old daughter Angel-Skye.

The centre back was bought by West Ham from Tottenham for £3million in 2007.

Police said a second man, aged 19, had also been arrested.

THE pregnant sister of stabbed soccer ace Calum Davenport mouthed "I love you" in court yesterday to the man accused of the attack.

Cara Davenport, 28, sported a black eye as she sat in the public gallery to show her support for Worrell Whitehurst, the father of her unborn child.

West Ham defender Calum, 26, was stabbed up to six times in the legs during the 5am incident on Saturday.

He was yesterday described as "stable" in hospital - amid fears one of the limbs may require AMPUTATION.

Powerfully-built Whitehurst, 25, faced Bedford magistrates accused of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He is also accused of causing actual bodily harm to Calum's mum Kim Stupple, 50, in the incident at her home in Kempston, near Bedford.

Whitehurst, who wore a grey T-shirt and blue jeans in court, is further charged with possessing an offensive weapon, a kitchen knife, and driving a Peugeot car while disqualified.

Cara, thought to be five months pregnant, sat with friends and relatives of Whitehurst throughout the 20-minute hearing. She whispered the words, "I love you" to him as he was remanded in custody and returned to the cells.

It is understood ex-England Under-21 international Calum, who was bought by the Hammers from Tottenham for £3million, was knifed following a night out with friends.

The star, who lives near his family with wife Zoey and daughter Angel-Skye, four, had an emergency op.

But he had lost 50 per cent of his blood and it is believed that doctors at Bedford Hospital fear he may still need to have one of his legs removed.

Even if he keeps his leg, it is feared Calum may never play again.

West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola and Spurs' boss Harry Redknapp both wished Calum the best as the teams met at the weekend.

Pals say Whitehurst works full-time on the railways. He is a former footballer who, it is claimed, had trials at Derby County.

He was arrested in Derby on Saturday afternoon and brought back to Bedford for questioning. He will next appear at Luton Crown Court on November 16.

Friends last night revealed that the father of Cara's first child is a notorious armed robber serving life in prison. Neville Knight, 35, lived the high life in the Caribbean on loot from brutal armed raids. He and Cara had baby Calum Junior together in 2005, her pals said.

A 19-year-old arrested after Calum's stabbing has been bailed by Bedfordshire police pending further inquiries.

West Ham defender Calum Davenport has offered his "heartfelt thanks" for the support he has received since he was stabbed in both legs last month.

The 26-year-old was in intensive care for six days after the incident on 22 August and he remains in hospital.

In his first public message, Davenport said: "Thank you to everyone who has sent messages of support to me and my family, it's very much appreciated.

"I have quite a long way to go before I recover, but I am feeling positive."

Davenport was attacked at his mother's home in Kempston, Bedfordshire and his sister's boyfriend has since been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The former Coventry and Spurs star added: "Thanks to the club, my team-mates and fans, to the club doctors and amazing staff at Bedford Hospital who have looked after me so well.

"I would also like to thank anyone who has ever donated blood, as you probably saved my life. I would like to encourage everyone to give blood."
