Thomas Vermaelen has been named the EA SPORTS Player of the Month for August.

The Belgian defender scooped the official Club prize after a string of powerful performances at the heart of the Arsenal back four.

Thomas made a dream debut at Goodison Park, heading home Robin van Persie's free-kick to give Arsenal a two-goal lead. They went on to win 6-1 as the new boy adapted quickly to English football.

The summer signing from Ajax was just as impressive at Celtic in the Champions League, making a number of timely blocks and interceptions while developing a strong partnership with William Gallas.

Thomas' standards remained high in his three other August games against Portsmouth, Celtic and Manchester United and he has been recognised by the Arsenal fans with 34.9 per cent of the votes cast.

Gallas, who scored three goals last month, finished second in our poll with 22.5 per cent. Andrey Arshavin was third.

AUGUST PLAYER OF THE MONTH RESULTS Player % of votes
Thomas Vermaelen 34.9%
William Gallas 22.5%
Andrey Arshavin 15.6%
Others 17%

Dan Clark from Colchester has won the chance to present Thomas with his award before an Arsenal home game this month. Dan will also receive two tickets to the match.

"He's made a fantastic start to his Arsenal career." said Dan.

"Thomas has been as solid as hell, dominant in the air and has been a great influence on William Gallas to boot. Plus he even managed a goal on his debut. We couldn't have asked for any better from him, he's been brilliant every game so far."

Fucking Dan Clark. I said pretty much the same thing. I should have won it.

The Arsenal fans have got it right, according to Arsène Wenger.

The Frenchman believes the supporters were correct to make Thomas Vermaelen the EA SPORTS Player of the Month for August. Voters on Arsenal.com gave the Belgian defender 35 per cent of the poll. His centre back partner William Gallas was second with 23 per cent. Wenger thought this was perceptive voting.

“I believe that is good recognition for the quality of Thomas’ performances,” the manager told Arsenal.com. “Certainly there is a little surprise factor in that. People did not expect him to perform that way straight away and he was not well known before he came here.
But it is well deserved.

“Second in the list is Gallas and that shows our defenders looked quite stable.”

Vermaelen was Arsenal’s only major purchase in the transfer window and Wenger went as far to suggest the 23-year-old’s early form justified his prudence.

“What we did during the transfer period created some anxiety amongst our fans,” said the manager. “But in the end, I am sure the fans are comforted by our decision to buy Vermaelen.”

The Belgian defender was named the EA SPORTS Player of the Month for August and has now scooped the September prize too. It's the first time a new signing has achieved that particular Arsenal 'double'.

And you can hardly blame the fans for picking Thomas again. The 23-year-old was outstanding in defence during September and got forward to net FOUR times and race to the top of Arsenal's scoring charts.

Thomas tapped in from close range at Standard Liege and scored twice - including one spectacular effort - as Wigan were beaten at Emirates Stadium.

The Belgian contributed to a clean sheet in that game and helped keep Fulham and Olympiacos at bay before ending September in style with a venomous 25-yard strike against Blackburn.

Thomas received 39.4 per cent of the votes cast - an improvement on his August share. Vito Mannone, so impressive in goal last month, was second with 19.5 per cent of the vote, just ahead of Robin van Persie.

SEPTEMBER PLAYER OF THE MONTH RESULTS Player % of votes
Thomas Vermaelen 39.4%
Vito Mannone 19.5%
Robin van Persie 19.29%
Others 21.81%

Kevin Crawford from Glasgow has won the chance to present Thomas with his award before the Birmingham game on Saturday. Kevin will also receive two tickets to the match.

"His decision making has been superb and his goals haul was unexpected." said Kevin.

Six games, four wins, two draws and 17 goals scored - October was another productive month for Arsenal.

Half-a-dozen of those goals came in the month's opening fixture against Blackburn and Emirates Stadium maintained it's fortress-like status against Birmingham and Tottenham in the Premier League and Liverpool in the Carling Cup. Life wasn't so rosy on the road as leads were let slip at Alkmaar and West Ham but both points will come in handy.

There are a number of contenders for our Player of the Month award. Thomas Vermaelen and William Gallas continued their impressive partnership in defence, Bacary Sagna and Gael Clichy were solid in support and Alex Song did a fine job shielding the back four. Cesc Fabregas made Arsenal tick from the centre of midfield and Robin Van Persie was too hot to handle up front with six goals in six October games. The Carling Cup kids stepped up too with Fran Merida and Craig Eastmond taking plenty of plaudits.

Who do you think was Arsenal's outstanding performer in October? If you're a registered user of Arsenal.com, this is YOUR chance to cast your vote for the EA SPORTS Player of the Month award. The deadline for voting is 10am (UK time) on Wednesday, November 11.

What's more, one lucky voter will be chosen to present the Player of the Month award to the winner before the home game against Chelsea at Emirates Stadium on November 29. They will also win two tickets to watch that game.

Remember - you should only consider games played in OCTOBER when you cast your vote. Tell us why you voted for that particular player and don't forget to include a daytime contact telephone number. Good luck!

Vermaelen very much reminds me of Phillipe Albert of Newcastle, he was a very good player.

Decent defender and good going forward, played for Belgium too.

Jens' Face - November 3, 2009 09:30 AM (GMT)
Arshavin and Diaby are the only outfield regulars that the club site doesn't suggest should win the award.

Wonder how Andrei feels, being in that company? Maybe he'll start to train harder now.

I don't see it tbh.

Albert was a shit defender, living off the glory of a goal against Man Utd.

I'll plump for RVP I think.

Led by example, and has started scoring.

Also got two Vs spuds. Always a good vote winner.

Albert was a terrific player and he did far more than score one goal. Newcastle weren't the best defensively but then neither are we and it's not Vermaelen's fault, in those days it wasn't Albert's fault either...I remember him being a very good player.

Aye - he is really stepping up to the plate - something that Whore palpably failed to do last season. I'm impressed.

Gotta be RVP this month.
