Title: Vermaelen next captain of AFC?
Description: I know it's premature

Whatever - September 17, 2009 11:59 AM (GMT)
This is a thought they have had for quite some time now, but especially after yesterday.

He seems to marshall the defense well, can be a bit of a c*** and seems to be able to be a match - winner from time to time (2 goals already for us)

What do you think?

The Emirates Gallastico - September 17, 2009 12:00 PM (GMT)
Premature.

The armband really isn't a big issue, we need many leaders all over the team. More players like Vermaelen would be awesome.

2charlies - September 17, 2009 12:00 PM (GMT)
yes

Syn - September 17, 2009 12:07 PM (GMT)
Give him the armband right now!

It'll benefit us in two ways...

- we'll have a proper leader as our captain.

- When Nasri comes back, Cesc's place in the team will be under threat...which then may push Cesc to play brilliantly if he wants to be on the plane to S.A.

Rkane - September 17, 2009 12:08 PM (GMT)
No, we'll of sold him within two years.

Darth Vela - September 17, 2009 12:11 PM (GMT)
Two years? Hell, I'm expecting Real Madrid to issue a statement saying how much they want him by December.

I think he'd make a good captain and given his age, we have to hope he's in for the long haul so I'd say he'll get the captaincy at some point but it's only an armband really, we've seen him organising and trying to inspire already, that's more useful than leading the team out and holding the trophies first (we MIGHT win one...).

Letters (TPFKA WWTL@WHL) - September 17, 2009 12:12 PM (GMT)
What was disappointing last night (well, lots of things were) was how our heads went down. The first 5 minutes were ridiculous but there was a long way to go. Instead of picking ourselves up and getting on with it we looked completely shell shocked for a good 20 minutes. We got better as the game wore on and played our way into it - although we never looked that good - but I would have hoped for a better, quicker response.

Ok.

So Vermaelen the next captain of AFC, yay or nay?

I agree.

But it's one step closer to happening if he's not captain any more. Although that's not happening either so :penguin:

We have depressingly few leaders in our squad.
He seems like one from what I've seen, so yay.

*tut*

I was just lamenting the lack of a decent captain to pick things up.
It was sort of related <_<

Bubba the Gunner - September 17, 2009 12:32 PM (GMT)
Vermaelen and Arshavin seem to be the only players who lead and encourage others. Two players who have been with us the shortest time speaks volumes.

Rosicky, when fit, seems to have fighting spirit, but is rarely there to count on.

Gallas failed already.

Cesc isnt a captain in my opinion.

No one else is near good enough to be captain. So, yeah, Vermin or Arshavin get my vote.

gunsofashburtongrove - September 17, 2009 01:01 PM (GMT)
Vermaelen is showing all the right signs, but its still early days.

Bubba you make some valid points there about Vermaelen, Arshavin and Rosicky.
Even doscounting that they encourage other players these are the only players, who fight under pressure. I would add Gallas to that, though he might not have got on well with encouraging others etc. He doesnt usually get bogged down by pressure.
You could see that against Liege, He conceeded a penalty, but didnt put a foot wrong apart from that . The point is you could see the disappointment of loosing two matches on the entire team except for him, Vermaelen, Rosicky and to some extent Eboue.

Nayan - September 17, 2009 01:30 PM (GMT)
so how tall is he?

gunsofashburtongrove - September 17, 2009 01:34 PM (GMT)
Tall enough

Maxzimus - September 17, 2009 06:47 PM (GMT)
Early days for him really, played a handful of matches and has looked good though against Man City he was poor.

Time will tell but I'm not taking a half decent performance against a team like Liege as an indicator as they're not exactly a great team.

GoonerBear - September 17, 2009 06:51 PM (GMT)
Early days if he continues his form he could well be our next captain.

Whatever - September 17, 2009 06:52 PM (GMT)
this thread will prove you wrong in 2 seasons...same as the manucho thread

fucking non - believers

Gunnerrrrr - September 17, 2009 10:46 PM (GMT)
our next captain will be Robin Van Persie, who is fairly vocal on the pitch.

Cesc is not really a captain, but Asharvin and Vermmaleen look like very big leaders with Rosicky also showing that leadership maturity

bergstar - September 18, 2009 02:54 PM (GMT)
I'd give him the armband tommorow without a shadow of a doubt. If Rosicky was fit then he'd be the only other contender, other than that there's no leadrship qualities amongst any of the rest

Ach - September 18, 2009 05:36 PM (GMT)
He bottled out of captainng his national team as he wasnt ready.

hymppi - September 18, 2009 06:03 PM (GMT)
it's gonna be him or arshavin after cesc leaves next summer. :coffee:
rather him.

Arshavinslittlelegs - September 19, 2009 05:46 PM (GMT)
I think Tommy V has a lot more to his game than defending. Obviously great at set pieces with his head but he has a cracker of a shot on him (Cf. Man City last week) and is pretty skillful (Cf. Back heel against Leige that was cleared off the line).

This guy will be immense for us going forward as well as defensively.

Gubby-Allen - September 19, 2009 07:37 PM (GMT)
With Cesc hobbling, I wouldn't be surprised if Arshavin & Vermalaen are already the next two on the list & will step in.

Thankfully that's not an issue any more, now we have two able leaders.

Even ignoring his ability, I like Wilshere, in just 5 mins you can see he puts himslef about & can take a take a tackle, wouldn't be surprised to see him captaining the reserves or CC side before too long.

The thread title says it all -it's premature. Move on.

Fookin hell. I'm carrying AFC Debate atm.

QUOTE (Arsenal.com)
"I’m a big fan of him. He’s been doing so well," said Fabregas at the launch of Nike's CTR360 Boot at the start of the month.

"It’s difficult in this position, especially from centre back because you will always be compared to some other players, or if you know that your defence is one of your weaknesses then you have to do even better to be loved by the people, and I think the fans clicked straight away with him since his first game.

"He scored a goal [in his first game at Everton], played amazing, his confidence is high at the moment. And with the ball he’s really good. He’s like one more midfielder.

"These days, to have a centre back that can play, you know, these balls on the ground, between the lines, and past players, for players like me in midfield it’s really good because it gives you so much time and so much space on the ball. It’s really good.

"The way he is playing I don't think he needs any advice [from me]. I am sure he is a very strong guy with a strong mentality. You can see he has been a captain before because he is strong and he knows how to lead a team."

Says it all, I'm afraid.

Moving Vermalien to CM to cover for Song's absence sounds like a very bad idea (and that's because it is a very bad idea) but that might be our only choice if a proper destroyer is needed.

Jack Will Score - October 14, 2009 04:16 PM (GMT)
the only alternative with the current squad is a 17 year old like coquelin, otherwise would be an attacking midfielder if from the older players.

you freaks, Denilson-Diaby-Fabregas is fine

Im happy with fab as captain right now..he's our golden boy and genuinely loves the team..but TV5 is showing good credentials..his goal against blackeye came out of angst it seemed(he knew he was at fault for their goal)..thats tough mentality!
But if it is not fab..it should be RVP..the one player i think will die for this club..his workrate for the past one and half seasons has been phenomenal.. i really think AFC has a good year ahead.

Gooner in Nipon - October 15, 2009 08:01 AM (GMT)
Cesc is showing he has what is required from an Arsenal captain!

Good at the job and playing well at the sametime

saying that based on a presence/performance ratio Gallas would be first in line for the armband if it was ever to be up for grabs again!

Denilson-Diaby proved to be a good defensive midfield combination in the 2nd half of last season. What more are you looking for?
