Title: Torres may end career with Reds

Maxzimus - October 2, 2009 08:29 AM (GMT)
A commendable attitude for a player these days, they're very lucky to have him. I know he mentions English teams but he already envisages finishing his career there which these days is very unusual, be nice to see a few more willing to do that.

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has revealed he does not envisage ever playing for another Premier League club, especially Manchester United.

Torres has made a stunning impact since joining Liverpool from Atletico Madrid in 2007, scoring 58 goals in 93 appearances for the club.

He has also enjoyed an impressive start to the new season, netting eight goals to date, including a hat-trick in last week's 6-1 thrashing of Hull City.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez recently admitted that rival Premier League sides had enquired about the Spain ace over the summer, with Manchester City and Chelsea rumoured to have shown an interest.

However, the 25-year-old would not countenance leaving Anfield for another English club, particularly old adversaries United.

"I can understand the feelings between Man Utd and Liverpool," Torres told Sport magazine when asked about the chances of playing for the Premier League champions.

"I'm a foreign player, but I know how the Liverpool fans feel and I remember the welcome I had when I arrived - it was amazing.

"I hope to play a lot of years or maybe even finish my career here.

"I don't know, but Liverpool is my English team and I don't think about playing for another one."

That's bad news for the guy, I thought he came to England to win trophies.

Michael Westen - October 2, 2009 09:54 AM (GMT)
It's a non-statement.

No star moves from top four club to another unless he's past it, or injury ridden. And even then, there's probably only 2/3 who have done it.

True but he does mention staying there for his whole career as well, that's not a non statement.

Real or Barca will offer around 60m next summer and he'll be off.

Michael Westen - October 2, 2009 10:27 AM (GMT)
Yeh he does. But saying 'or maybe finish my career here' isnt that much of a statement to me.

The next 2/3 years is his peak, considering his style of game and injuries he's had. So he's goin no where soon and after that, from Liverpool, is most likely gonna be a step down.

It's one of those things which players say and the fans like to hear but in reality if he feels he'd do better elsewhere he'll piss off.

Maxzimus - October 2, 2009 12:43 PM (GMT)
To be fair you don't hear too many players saying they can see themselves finishing their career somewhere, I haven't heard any of our players say that for years.

Whatever - October 2, 2009 12:47 PM (GMT)
When Gerrard is finished as a player (or put in jail) he's off to Barca

Marc Overmars - October 2, 2009 12:49 PM (GMT)
Meh, it's just a soundbyte that top players will say to enhance their footing at the club.

Things change very quickly in Football.

Yeh but that's cos your players are all 10.

Torres has done his big money move. Most top players will get that move and look to end their career there.

Your guys saying something like that when they're 21 years old would be silly. They've all got their big money move to come.

I also think it shouldn't be forgotten Liverpool, if this season are trophyless will have gone three seasons without one - with Torres there. It would be four in total.

"Premier League career'

'Liverpool is my English team'

Hardly a blank cheque is it?

Babel is Boss - October 2, 2009 08:04 PM (GMT)
Can't seeing staying for the rest of his career, but hopefully he'll be at Anfield a long time. I can only really envisage him going back to Atletico. (Pretty sure he said that when he arrived.)

Do you think that means the article headline should read.

"Liverpool may end Torres' career"?

McNamara That Ghost... - October 5, 2009 03:16 PM (GMT)
I can't imagine which columnist would ever write that...

:ninja:

Yeah - if a team went 4 years without a trophy, all the good players would leave.

Coney, yes, exactly. Unless I should put in a disclaimer every time I comment about another club that I am somehow ignoring the failings of Arsenal.
