Title: Wenger: "Arshavin can be like Messi or Ronaldo"
Description: Yay or nay?

Arsène Wenger has charged Andrey Arshavin with the job of becoming Arsenal’s talisman.
The manager believes his Russian playmaker will rank alongside world greats like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo if he can help the North London side win a trophy this season.
Arshavin helped to elevate Zenit St Petersburg to European honours before arriving at Emirates Stadium in February and Wenger argues that the time is right for a repeat at Arsenal.
"I believe he has a big challenge in front of him,” said the 59-year-old. “He made his team in Russia win and if he manages to make Arsenal win he will become an all-time great.
"That is the real challenge he faces and I am convinced he has all the potential to do it.”
Of course, potential has been present at Arsenal for a few years now, maximising it has proved more difficult. Wenger believes Arshavin can exist in the same category as Messi and Ronaldo, he just needs the trophies to prove it.
"I think we have many players who are in that bracket and this is a season when they can show it,” he said. “I consider him a great player already but if you want the consideration of everybody else people think about your qualities with trophies.
“Yes you can say players like Ryan Giggs can never win a World Cup because Wales never get there. But he shows in his club that he is a great.
“I just love Arshavin as a footballer because he has things that are just down to him. He is intelligent and he looks like he is a shrewd street-player because he creates something always in unexpected situations.
"He has a low centre of gravity, great pace and tricky dribble. He uses all that he has in the locker in an intelligent way and don't forget he is a winner as well." |
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/2...ger-on-arshavinI think hes already at the Messi/Ronaldo level. He's at the right level of club to achieve top honours and seems hungry to prove himself. The only worry is fitness/injury issues but if he can stay fit and replicate his form of last season (hopefully Olympiacos was the real beginning of his season) I see no reason why he cannot lead us to trophies.

Don't know what it is, but I just don't see things working out well with Arshavin.
XsNrG - October 2, 2009 09:55 PM (GMT)
Quality player, still cant believe we only got him for what, 10mil?
Not fair to heap too much expectation on him though, in my opinion. Football is a team game after all.
Lancastrian Gunner - October 2, 2009 10:01 PM (GMT)
I don't suppose he'll reach the level of Ronaldo or Messi but Arshavin can be a tremendous player at this club. He has produced some excellent performances since he arrived, including re-energizing the team at the end of last season.
JackTheLad19 - October 2, 2009 10:04 PM (GMT)
I suppose he could be in terms of what they are to their teams (matchwinner, talisman) but they're on a different level to everyone especially Messi. Not to say Arshavin's not godlike...
21_GOONER_SALUTE - October 2, 2009 10:08 PM (GMT)
Easily yay, just not sure he will achieve this superlative level of performance at our club atm- In fact I seriously doubt we'll see another TH14 like figure in Arsernal under AW (but if AW chooses to stay for another 30 years, might have to review this opinion).
Darth Vela - October 2, 2009 10:12 PM (GMT)
Yeah, he really could be as effective for us as they are but frankly, I'll be happy with him providing some balance and a bit of mercurial brilliance now and again, rather than knocking in 30 goals a season.
Marc Overmars - October 2, 2009 10:15 PM (GMT)
He's quality, but not at the Messi or Ronaldo level, and never will be.
Ach - October 2, 2009 10:23 PM (GMT)
Hopefully as good as if not better than Ronaldo.
Hes already better than Messi

Arshavin is a terrific player but Ronaldo is something else...goals galore, pace to burn, great ball skills and can head too.
Messi's a fantastic player too but for me Ronaldo is better. Arshavin will score goals and will create but he'll never score as many as Pires and will never have that special gaelic flair which Pires had...he's a great dribbler though.
I don't think Arshavin can lead us to trophies though, we need some other top class players....do we have them I'm not sure, some have potential but it's difficult to tell how much.

Syn - October 3, 2009 07:51 AM (GMT)
Arshavin's goalscoring record so far (for Arsenal) - a goal every 2.44 games. That's in all comps. His league record is better.
Pires' goalscoring record for the club - a goal every 3.36
Arshavin is now only 55 league goals behind Pires. He's knocking off the runs in less than 4 seasons.
And it's not just about scoring goals, assists-wise, match-winning-ability-wise...any way you wanna look at it, the Russian's coming out on top. We have a tendency to overrate players that have won things just because some are so desperate to see us win a trophy. Put Arshavin in a team next to Bergkamp and Henry, and he would've won a loada shit too.
Jack Will Score - October 3, 2009 08:18 AM (GMT)
ultimately a player is judged by trophies, shearer and le tissier are examples of great players who were at clubs that won little or nothing for most of their careers. I guess you could make an exception for the david may type who have won titles without playing much or doing much.
Syn - October 3, 2009 08:28 AM (GMT)

Arshavin for winning trophies in Europe

even if he had won more high profile trophies eg the cl or a title in one of the top european leagues it wouldn't make him a legend for us. suker won lots with real madrid (I think) but he wasn't spectacular for us.

Makes little difference. Zenit were in it, they won it. And Arshavin was a big part of them winning it.
Plus it's not like they just beat rubbish teams en route to reaching the final.
Also, if we do get knocked out of the Carling Cup, I hope it won't bother you too much.
Jack Will Score - October 3, 2009 09:05 AM (GMT)
I went to the last carling cup game so I do care about it but it isn't in the same league as even the fa cup.
my point about the uefa win was that it won't be remembered.
Arshavin is a good player though and I hope he does win things at Arsenal so he will be remembered on the wider footballing stage. I think he said he joined us in part to make his name elsewhere.
McNamara That Ghost... - October 3, 2009 09:08 AM (GMT)
Just because you won't remember it, doesn't mean it won't be remembered. Actually thanks to the Rangers fans actions in Manchester that night probably won't be forgotten.

I think that's right. I've always thought we need the catalyst players and we are beginning to get them. Arshavin and Verlmaelen (sp?) are such - they clearly have an effect on the players around them. They could be what makes the difference between falling short by a few points or winning silverware. Just getting thoes extra points we drop with the draws when, with a bit more motivation on the pitch in the game, we could pick up the extra 2 points a win would bring. You only need a few of those to reach the top. When heads drop after 70 minutes of not getting to score, it is players like him that can tip it in the last 20 minutes by keeping at it and showing the others how it is done.
