QUOTE ((from this summer))
The 23-year-old, who signed a long-term deal at the Emirates last year, said: "I heard there is interest from Real Madrid. But I have a contract with Arsenal which I intend to respect unless the club say otherwise.

"I want to win things with Arsenal."

Says it all, I'm afraid.

I hope the club don't sell him. We need to keep this group of players together. Clichy has been here the longest out of the current squad; he has always been committed to the club, and at a time when loyalty is non-existent, he has been one of very, very few to escape with any credit.

Yeah, he might make stupid mistakes that there's no sign of him cutting out but we need all the loyal players we can get tbh. Although having said that, he has been better this season than last imo so I hope he's going to move on and let all the crap behind him be consigned to history.

Syn - October 11, 2009 01:55 PM (GMT)
That said, if a 'Vermaelen>Toure'-esque upgrade is available....

 Clichy

Maxzimus - October 11, 2009 03:05 PM (GMT)
Have to say when he had Cole ahead of him he really played very well when he came in, still think he's a decent player but just hasn't progressed as he should, he still can't cross and his defending is average.

He should train more on his weaknesses as he's no spring chicken anymore.

MissHandbag - October 11, 2009 03:32 PM (GMT)
I like Clichy - Not always been consistent but like someone else commented, very loyal and when he's on form makes a difference.

Marc Overmars - October 11, 2009 03:34 PM (GMT)
Closest thing we've got to a Gooner in the first team.

He needs a bit of fine tuning but we'd be foolish to get rid.

Jack Will Score - October 11, 2009 03:58 PM (GMT)
didn't he come out and say something along the lines of "I like first team football and don't want to be another hleb" or words to that affect and so wouldn't leave unless certain promises were made?

I like Clichy too, he does make the odd silly mistake but overall I think he's been excellent since Cole left, I don't feel we've really missed Cole because of him.

That said...£16m, I reckon I'd take that for him if he wants to leave. Sounds like he doesn't though which is good.

Clichy would be first choice at Real and also Real dont do a Barca and ruin players careers.

Clichy will be fine

Maxzimus - October 11, 2009 07:25 PM (GMT)
He's very loyal no question and I wouldn't want us to sell him but he could be a lot better a player if he only worked on his weaknesses more.

Clichy is excellent and has done well since Cole left but Cole remains the better player, he's better going forward and better defensively too, I just feel if Clichy worked a bit harder on those areas he could become as good as Cole.

he didn't seem to think so.

we'll see, traore and gibbs give us cover there and we may choose to sell cluchy anyway to open the way for them.

they didn't ruin his career but they didn't play him enough and team selection at the time certainly didn't seem to be a meritocracy.

Owen isnt as good as Raul or Ronaldo.

No wonder he didnt play much

didn't he score more? either in total or per match? he certainly did well but didn't become a regular.

Clichy: Focus is on Gunners

Defender Gael Clichy is focused only on matters at the Emirates amid fresh speculation regarding his future.

The French full-back is reported to be a potential summer target for Primera Liga giants Real Madrid, who are keen to bolster their defensive options.

Clichy told the News of the World: "At the moment, I am focused on Arsenal. This season could be very important - the summer of 2010 is still far away."

Whatever - October 11, 2009 11:01 PM (GMT)
If we get 20m and find a decent replacement, we would be idiots to not let him go..aside from Sagna, he has been our worst performer for almost one and a half season..people whinge about lack of new players, but wanna get hold of longtime-underperforming players that could make us good money (Eboue as well before the start of this season)

If Clichy performs considerably better than last season, we should try to keep him, otherwise I would reconsider him

McNamara That Ghost... - October 12, 2009 01:24 PM (GMT)
I think Real Madrid have already used up their quota of buing defensive players under Perez.

One for the utter bollocks section.

Gooner in Nipon - October 13, 2009 12:33 AM (GMT)
newspaper tosh!!!

and no to getting rid of him! :fury:

When I saw the thread title, I thought it was about the Tory Party Manifesto.

Little Miss Gooner - October 13, 2009 04:22 PM (GMT)
We should only let him go if he wants to leave. Clichy loves Arsenal and he's been nothing but loyal, patient and he says all the right things i.e. doesn't shit stir in the media. He doesn't have an ego and he works hard. we'd be poorer without him in the dressing room IMO

tech12 - October 14, 2009 01:50 AM (GMT)
exactly. he seems like a very stand up guy. we want a core group of players committed to arsenal so that personality can permeate throughout the crowd.
