Title: Brown To Be Sacked?

Ach - October 28, 2009 07:01 PM (GMT)
QUOTE
Hull have denied sacking manager Phil Brown, although bookmakers have stopped taking bets on him being the next Premier League boss to go.

The club issued a statement saying: "Contrary to media speculation the club can confirm Phil Brown has not been sacked and remains Hull manager."

The news comes as an auditor said Hull could go out of business if relegated.

Paddy Power and William Hill were two of the bookmakers who suspended betting on Brown leaving his job.

Hills had installed him as joint favourite with Portsmouth's Paul Hart to be the next Premier League manager out of work at 7-4.

But the firm's spokesman Graham Sharpe said: "We saw a string of bets for Brown to go, with punters asking to stake up to £500 a time. At that point we decided to close the book."

The speculation concerning Brown's future comes on the same day auditor Deloitte revealed the Humberside club needed £23m "to meet current liabilities" and, if they were to be relegated, losing the £7m they get from the Premier League would be a major blow.

But the accounts cover the year before Hull's first Premier League campaign and the directors insist the financial situation is much improved since then.

Hull lost nearly £10m during the 12 months to July 2008. During that time, the Tigers were promoted to the top tier via the play-offs.

Their first season in the Premier League began with a string of significant away wins against strong opponents, but results were poor in the second half of the season and Hull were ultimately fortunate to escape relegation.

This season they have collected eight points from their first 10 matches, leaving them in the relegation zone, with only West Ham and Portsmouth beneath them.

Brown was subjected to booing from his own fans during the recent 0-0 draw with Portsmouth after he substituted midfielder Stephen Hunt.

I agree with this, it's such a disruption to the league when managers are sacked so early into the season, it doesn't help anyone, especially a team in crisis.

problem is if he goes then it will just continue the short termism ( ) that makes english football development suffer.

They've won like 3 games this year.

Shocking.

Infact that can stretched back to when their honeymoon period ended last November/December.

Hull City chairman Paul Duffen has claimed that Phil Brown is a better manager than Liverpool counterpart Rafael Benitez.

The Tigers' gaffer has come under intense scrutiny following the miserable start to the season that Hull have made, the east Yorkshire club only managing eight points from 10 games so far.

But his chairman has mounted a robust defence of the manager.

"If you look at Phil's squad and what he will do with it this season compared to Rafa [Benitez], you'll find Phil will come out top in terms of adding value to players," Duffen told The Sun.

"We were written off by everybody last year and told we were going to redefine the expression 'doing a Derby' - but we broke all records for a newly-promoted side.

"People use that as a stick to beat Phil with because he over-achieved so much last year."

PAUL DUFFEN has revealed Hull's nightmare 2009 forced him to quit as chairman.

The Tigers supremo left his role at the struggling club after two years at the helm.

He played a major part in their rise to the Premier League and their survival last season.

But they have won just THREE league matches since the turn of the year and are currently in the relegation zone.

Duffen will be succeeded by former chairman Adam Pearson, who quit the same role at Derby yesterday.

He said: "Football is a results business and in the same way that I enjoyed the successes of the previous two seasons, so I must take ultimate responsibility for the disappointments of 2009.

"It has been a tremendous privilege to lead the Tigers on this amazing journey.

"I pay tribute to all the staff for their hard work and dedication as well as to the fans for their magnificent support.

"I am proud to have played my part and wish the club every success in the future."

ADAM PEARSON walked out of Derby last night - to take over at Hull City again.

Pearson, 45, who sold the Tigers for £13million two years ago, has agreed to become chairman of the cash-strapped Premier League club.

He replaces Paul Duffen and his arrival places a big question mark over boss Phil Brown's future.

Duffen resigned after talks with majority shareholder Russell Bartlett, an Essex property developer who bought the club from Pearson in 2007.

Hull are in the relegation zone having taken eight points from their first 10 games. They have also mortgaged their TV revenue for this season already.

Accountants Deloitte have already warned the club they need to overhaul their finances and that if they drop to the Championship they must find £23m just to meet their bills.

Pearson bought Hull in 2001 when they were in administration and in the Football League's bottom division.

He is seen as the answer to the problems at the KC Stadium.

He resigned yesterday and headed straight to Center Parcs to join his family for half-term.

But he will be in charge by the time Hull head to Burnley this weekend.

Pearson faces a mammoth job at the KC Stadium - and may not have too much patience with Brown, even though he appointed him.

Brown was promoted from caretaker after an impressive set of results following the sacking of Phil Parkinson.

Pearson was looking at other candidates before Brown's success and considered appointing someone else.

Former Hull hero Dean Windass called on the club to axe Brown.

He said: "Sometimes you need a fresh change. Phil's done a fantastic job since he's been there but it's time he should get moved on to bring somebody else in."

For the last two years Pearson has been at Derby, who have had similar cash worries.

He was instrumental in bringing in an American consortium.

His position will be filled by chief executive Tom Glick, reporting to company chairman Andy Appleby.

Pearson said: "I have thoroughly enjoyed the two years at Derby, despite not achieving the playing success on the pitch we hoped for.

"The wage bill is now under control, the squad size is under control, the academy structure is solid and we have a management team in place who will take the team forward."

Duffen, who is in bed with flu, was hailed as the club went into the top flight for the first time. But they lost nearly £10m in the last financial year.

Pearson did have plans to build a hotel with casino near the stadium before he left.

He is the ideal man to dust off the plans.

debts of £27m and a £40m wage bill. If they're relegated they're doomed.

I don't see anyone in their squad worth enough to sell to really help much tbh.

1558: BREAKING NEWS
Hull City owner Russell Bartlett has confirmed to BBC Radio Humberside that former chairman Adam Pearson will be unveiled as the replacement for Paul Duffen on Monday.

Ach - November 2, 2009 10:54 AM (GMT)
QUOTE
New Hull City chairman Adam Pearson has said manager Phil Brown will be in charge for Sunday's game against Stoke.

But Pearson, back at Hull after a two-year absence, did not give assurances over Brown's long-term future, with the club lying 18th in the Premier League.

"Phil will be manager on Sunday but there's no point me saying he's got a job for life, that's not the case," Pearson told BBC Radio Humberside.

"We need results, quickly, and that puts pressure on everyone at the club."

Pearson begins work at Hull on Monday after replacing Paul Duffen as chairman following a two-year spell at Championship side Derby County.

The Tigers have won only twice in the league this season and are in the relegation zone, two points adrift of safety.

Pearson conceded that if Brown does not start to change things he may find himself under pressure to keep his job.

"How secure is the manager? That's a tricky one, I think if we don't get results then that security goes down," added Pearson.

"Phil knows that, it's the business we're in. It's been a difficult year and we need to achieve results quickly.

"We're all in this together but we'll have to see what happens over the next couple of weeks."

Hull's future was thrown into doubt last week after auditor Deloitte warned the Tigers could go out of business if they are relegated at the end of the season.

Deloitte said Hull need £23m "to meet current liabilities" and, if they go down, losing the £7m they get from the Premier League would be a major blow.

Pearson believes the situation at the KC Stadium is not as bad as has been suggested but admitted Hull do need to restructure their finances.

"The wage bill is far too high for the value we've got in there," he stated.

"The club is trading and it's solvent and it can be sorted out but there are too many costs surrounding it which seem to have become a little superfluous. What's the phrase - maybe a little too much champagne, maybe not enough ale!"
