Title: Wenger doing the Ostrich - again
bergstar - October 31, 2009 07:50 AM (GMT)
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/w...t-a-big-problemErr, yes they are Arsene, for the last three years they've been a major problem and have prevented you winning jack shit.
It's fine to bring up one or two convenient examples, but this shit has gone on in all meaningful games in the last 3 years. League against Man U, Chelsea, Qtr final CL against Liverpool, last years pathetic 4-4's, last years FA cup semi, to name a few and the continuation this year.
It's a fecking big problem !

Why torture yourself berg's, you know what he's like, the guys in denial.

I'd like to see you guys address AW's logic and explain why it's wrong rather than argue with the headline

Arsène Wenger does not believe that conceding late goals is an ongoing problem for his Arsenal side.
The Frenchman's team dropped points recently against Alkmaar in the Champions League and West Ham in the Premier League when they appeared to have put themselves in winning positions.
The same thing happened against Tottenham at Emirates Stadium last October when Arsenal led 4-2 after 88 minutes but only ended up drawing. All three games were brought up at Wenger’s press conference ahead of this year’s North London derby but Wenger remained relaxed.
“It is not a concern at all,” replied the manager to his questioner. “You put three results together which for me had different reasons.
“Last year in the 4-4 draw [against Spurs] I believe we switched off. I don’t believe at West Ham we switched off at all and I don’t believe at Alkmaar we switched off.
“In the Champions League, if you look at the results, 50 per cent of the goals are conceded basically in the last five minutes and at West Ham I believe we were really unlucky.
“We were focused but we were unlucky with the free-kick and we were unlucky with the penalty. I don’t believe either of those was the right decision.” |

Ok, jens, last year against Spurs we switched off, and Chelsea semi and Liverpool 4-4, and the season before, and season before. what does that mean precisely ?
For me it means losing concentration, making silly basic unforced errors, not doing the basics. Do you think going 2-0 down in Liege in the manner we did or think by not marking the tallest player in the Alkmaar side with the last kick of the ball, that we addressed that ?, sorry does Wenger ?
As for being unlucky, well we can all say that, oh it doesn't matter that silly balls Diaby & Song make dopey clumsy challenges that put pressure on the ref to make a decision, we'll say we're unlucky they never went out way.
Losing focus, concentration, "switching off" all the same to me mate and we've been as guilty of it this year as much as ever in the previous few. The sight of him hurling his Jacket around seems to back that up aswell.

Don't think Spurs and Liverpool last season had anything to do with switching off
Against Spurs the fullbacks and Almunia were downright terrible, Liverpool was our worst defensive performance in years..it was really cringeworthy

isnt this arguing about nothing though - does anyone really expet him to say 'yeah all you armchair pundits are right - if only id just told them not to switch off just like you said.'
he looked furious on the touchline when the players were as disciplined as he wanted.
I think we have to watch to see if they learn from the experiences they've had lately and start being more professional when closing out games, (for example). Talk is cheap whether its diaby saying yet again 'we have to learn' or its wenger telling you the words you want to hear.

Have to agree with Whatever on the Liverpool point. That was one of our most shocking performances during the Wenger era. But for the brilliance of one player in isolation, we would have been tonked 4-0 and frankly, that still wouldn't have done the pathetic nature of our performance justice.
As for the Spuds match, I don't see how anyone can say the result was not down to us switching off. As bad as we were against Liverpool, we were amazing in this match and I have never, not even yesterday, seen us piss all over a Spurs team to the extent we did in the 4-4 match.
Quite why the Spuds would want to see a DVD of them getting buttfucked for all but two minutes of injury time is beyond me.

Thought the Spurs game was more about Almunia gifting them 2 goals and Denilson being a joke at DM myself..could be wrong on this though...I remember our centeracks being decent and the fullback being dogshite in this match

it is an old problem as well, a defensive lapse in concentration by cole lead to the lehman sending off in 06 cl final.

I thought the only weak link in that game was Adebayor. Whenever the ball got played to him, he ballsed up. All the other players were magnificent in terms of ball control, teamwork, "passion", it was all there. Walcott has his best game in an Arsenal shirt.
I agree with GB when he says it was a performance better than yesterday's.
