the commercialism of Christmas is something that probably angers Christians more than or at least as much as non Christians.
the coca cola christmas marketing scam tis idolatrous exploitative nonsense.

They nicked it off the pagans, the tv/media execs nicked it off them.
What goes around, comes around.
Personally, I don't mind them, reminds me of being a kid again.

as a Christian I don't believe in the ott celebration of holy days (some go for that, I don't) but if Christmas is going to celebrated it should be for the birth of Christ or not at all imo, otherwise what is the point? call it merry I-wasted-my-money-so-I-could-show-off-and-also-got-drunk-and-argued-with-my-family day.
to be fair Christmas may have used the date and the trimmings of a pagan holiday but it never claimed to be a pagan holiday, the commercialised theft of Christmas hasn't seen a new belief announced just the old one sidelined and suppressed.

no just that commercialfest hasn't said it is anything different to Christmas, Christians never said Christmas was the same as the pagan holiday that happened on the same day.

She only said she was a virgin because she didn't want people to know Joseph had been slipping her a length.
XsNrG - November 5, 2009 09:34 PM (GMT)
Even the whole "virgin" thing is often attributed (by sceptics possibly, or people who actually study languages + ancient texts) as a mistranslation
From some link:

בתולה (bethulah) means virgin and עלמה (`almah) means young woman in the Hebrew. The Hebrew texts use עלמה. The Septuagint uses παρθένος (parthenos) a virgin. |

are you suggesting that in 2000 years of Christianity no Christian academic has studied the translation properly?
have you read all the references to the virgin birth?

More importantly, have they started Xmas songs on the radio, music channels etc?
XsNrG - November 5, 2009 10:15 PM (GMT)
Nope, I prefer modern day fiction (tongue in cheek)
The bible, ultimately, is a 2000 year old scripted version of chinese whispers, which has been modified and changed over the years by various different cultures, to suit their agenda.
You sound religious, or possibly Christian, fair play to you, but we will have to agree to disagree when it comes to this matter, as faith compels you to believe what you believe/have been told, and never challenge it as it is the word of God.

it's not a case of blindly following a package of chinese wispers.
The Bible is far more than that. The books of the New Testament were written within the lifetimes of the apostles in the first century. We have incredibly old copies of the originals and so can believe their authenticity without needing a blind leap of faith. There were multiple copies of letters to begin with (e.g. gospel's written out many times as they were sent out to Christians in the first century) but these all told the same thing. Where there was a difference it would only have been a matter of one over eager scribe mistranslating a word, in this case the wording used in the majority of copies was treated as the authentic word.
I do believe the Bible to be true but I do not believe it irrationally and without enquiring as to it's authenticity, especially when compared to other religious texts.
