Can anyone tell me at what age can a breeder tell if a pup will be standard or long coat?
Thanks
I'm not sure you always can until they are much older. Though most can tell by the time the pup is 6 weeks. The longcoats tend to have fluffy ears where as the standards don't... That is what I noticed with mine anyway! But I am more used to standard coats, Saskie is my first longcoat.
When I had Saskie the breeder said she had to be a longcoat, but she wasn't sure how much coat she would have as she had a lot less than the rest of the litter. One of her sisters, who, as a puppy was really fluffy, now she is fully grown she has less coat than Saskie does. Weird!
my breeder told me solar was long coated by 3 weeks and abby breeder told about 2 weeks old as the fluff was appearing on photos you can she wavy effect coming on hair, but she was expecting all pups to be long coated, abby sire owner julia is brill and have bets on coats and she is always right even from a very young age of a few days, i suppose it all depends on how experienced there are in the breed and there will also know the pedigree line of which dogs tend to throw long/ standard coats.... just a waiting game for you....
Generally a breeder can tell fom about 4/5 weeks of age, sometimes you can tell earlier and sometimes it can be even 6/7 weeks before you can be sure.
Thanks for the replies :) Fingers crossed one standard coat girly might be mine from a litter that I am interested in......will update as soon as I know 100% :congrats:
