Ahmadinejad: US Seeks Hegemony over Middle-East

TEHRAN (Fars News Agency)- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad criticized the US for its plan to increase weapons sales to several Arab countries and step up military aid to Israel, saying Washington was trying to impose its dominance on the Middle East.

Ahmadinejad's comments were sparked by Washington's announcement earlier this week that it would sell advanced weaponry to Persian Gulf nations worth at least $20 bln and provide new 10-year military aid packages to Israel and Egypt.

"All US efforts are for the creation of differences among our brothers in the region to impose its ideas and hegemony," Ahmadinejad was quoted as saying on his office's official website. "Americans feel their relations with regional (Middle-East) countries are weakened, and under cover of this, the arms deal, they want to make relations warm."

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice visited several countries in the Middle East this week to discuss the proposed military package, seen as a counterweight to Iran's rising influence in the region.

The Iranian president also criticized US support for Israel and Washington's efforts to promote Arab-Israeli peace.

"The US plans to introduce Israel as a friend of the regional (Arab) countries," said Ahmadinejad. "Instead, they want to portray the Iranian nation, brother and best friend of Arab nations, as their enemy."

Ahmadinejad also said that "Americans have faced a dead end" in their efforts to squeeze Iran.

"They will go nowhere with these primitive and weak movements," he added.

The Iranian president called on Arab nations to spurn the US weapons deal, arguing they should "spend the resources for progress and development of their countries."

LONDON, August 4 (IranMania) - Iran's hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called the US weapon deal an old trick to create division in the region, IRNA reported.

"This is not the first time the US sells weapons to the region; they in the past 20 years have sold over 400 bln worth of weapons to the region. The US is trying its best to create division in the region so to impose its policies to the Middle East," the president made the remark in a meeting with a group of Algerian journalists and mediapersons prior to his Monday Algeria visit.

President Ahmadinejad went on to say that the Islamic Republic of Iran was not worried about this package, because it had brotherly relations with the region.

He also referred to the efforts of the US for fixating the 'Zionist' regime in the region and said, "They are trying to introduce the region's enemy as a friend and the region's true friend as an enemy." "My only advice to our regional brothers is that, do not waste your national resources and capitals on such things; apply and use them for your country's progress and development."
