Title: Shining Force Series
Description: The original Fire Emblem rival!

Anyone remember, played the Shining Force titles?

Shining Force uses a similar style battle system to that of Fire Emblem, although some titles were released to the western world well before that of the Fire Emblem series.

I've played both Shining Force II back on the old Genesis and it quickly become one of my fav strategy RPG's, and later I've got the first on GBA which is also a great title.

Any discussion on the great old series by Sega can take place here!

This was very likely my first turn-based strategy game. I spent countless hours on the original with my old Genesis when I was younger. Good times. ^_^

I played a little bit of Shining Force II a while ago, but I got stuck somewhere and never got back to it. I should give it a try again sometime. I haven't gotten the time to try out the remake on the GBA yet.

My big brother played Shining Force Neo.. And i think it wasnt a Strategy game, but action game like KH

I had bought SF EXA too, but havent played that one :)

Do i remember it these, geez they took years of my life - heck, i still play them through every year at least once :D

They were way before there time, a great team based RPG. Interesting, well layed out battles with cracking stories and a vast list of varied and unique characters to play (several secret). I even used to play it co-op with a couple of my mates (we'd pick a couple of characters each and play to our own desires making it even more tactical).

Id reccomend both but play the first game before the second. Reason being otherwise youd get annoyed at some of the flaws removed for the second which were present in the first (ie losing some of your stats for simply promoting your character was a baffling one)

I heard about Neo EviLina, although apparently it's quite different from the original Shining Force titles.

And you made a good point Skode, I played the first Shining Force after the second and found it quite inferior in comparison, still an alright game but it really has nothing in the second Shining Force.

The battle systems were simply perfect, I loved how you had the ranged style magic, and the promition system was just outstanding, even that little useless thief Slade for example turns into a very useful Ninja at promotion, with excellent magic too! And it even had an alright story attached, it's hard to believe a Strat/RPG as good as this existed so many years ago now. This and Phantasy Star IV are my two all time fav classic RPGs. =D

...I always laughed at the Red Barons actual name too.

Eh, i always thought the name Lemon was menacing  it was the same to have a giant golem called Claude and the birdman Skreech.

Yeah, they couldnt have made the promotion system any better - i especially liked the more unique character classes like the Wolf Baron, the Ninja as you mentioned and even the Monster (i never enviasaged that the helmet tossing tortoise Kiwi would end up as a giant, flying, fire breathing monster :o )

Hell yeah, Kiwi was by far the best promotion in the game, in his original form he had awesome DEF but no HP to support it. That helped with his promotion, but most of all he got free movement too, water, trees, didn't matter he just moved like a god. ATK and everything else improved dramatically as well, just keep him away from magic!

Man, thinking about it makes me want to play it again actually!

You seem as in love with the game as i am fayt

Got a question for you mate as ive never personally found the answer myself - just what is the point of the hidden fairy forest battle mini game?

Fayt - February 19, 2008 01:08 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I played and finished the game at least 3 times, hidden fairy forest battle mini game...omg it's being so long since I played it that, it does not ring a bell. :/

i own Shining Force Neo and EXA.

i like these two. it reminds me of dynasty warriors and samurai warriors in terms of battling many enemies that is. however later in these games, the enemies were too powerfull. it was very tough to win. but still i enjoyed these games a lot.
the charecters were not bad. and weapon making and upgrading was fun.
