IC InformationName: Marienne Elizabeth James
Avatar: Cintia Dicker
Occupation: Marie never actually
works but she loves playing Piano, and only wishes that there was a place for women on stage in musical concerts. Alas... :poopie:
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Appearance: A very thin girl, Marie gew very quickly. Her figure is surprisingly feminine, however she likes to hide it with whatever loose-fitting dresses she can find instead of ones that would hug her even tighter. She isn't particularly tall, but by no means is she considered 'short'. About 5 foot, 6 inches, Marie is the height of a woman nearly 12 years her senior. She has a certain style, and prefers to wear things with either a white or otherwise pale in coloring. One of the striking things about Marie is her hair color; a very fiery red which is usually left down around her shoulders. Her hair is very thick, and elegant with waves, and some ringlet-curls underneath.
Her face is heart-shaped, but more oval than anything else. Her skin tone is not entirely pale, but it isn't very colored either. Upon her cheeks and the bridge of her nose lay freckles, just like her mother before her. Her hands and feet are small, and dainty which is sought after in a lady. Marie has but one thing that belongs to her father's genes, and that is her eyes. Round, but almost almond shaped, Marie's eyes are a very lovely blue color which tends to change when in direct sunlight.
Personality: Marie James is a very quiet and good-natured girl. She's shy for the first five minutes of meeting her, and then you will find she's quite open to conversation. Marie is definately not opinionated, but she does have her private thoughts on things, and can often let those get in the way of a new person's appearance in her life. Marie was brought up in an excellent manner, and is very intelligent and knows when to keep quiet. She will usually only speak when addressed, or spoken to, which makes her very easy to control.
She knows how to push her limits, and has rarely ever exceeded them, which could make her potentially afraid of trying new things. You could say, that Marie has the personality of a butterfly; Sweet, pretty things attract her, but the slightest notion that something has gone wrong, and she will run away immediately. To add to this, Marie has a love of nature like no one she's ever met. She loves to spend time out of doors, walking, or smelling the flowers. Gardens are the kinds of places you can usually find her.
History: Love is a curious thing. Curious, in a sense, that it is almost always unpredictable, and one can never be sure whom it is that they will forever give their heart to. Love, it seems.. is also the primary problem in Marie's life. At the age of 15, Marie's mother married her first husband; a 37 year-old banker from France. This man was wealthy, but bitter and resigned early in the evenings to spend hours in either his private study, or his bedroom; looking over stray papers, or counting the receipts of his fortune. Their marriage was loveless.. just a petty thing that mattered on paper, but not to either one of them. Marie's grandfather had chosen this man for his good fortune, steady income, and well-known family name; Worthing.
It is also curious, that Mr. Worthing did not live to see his 40th year. Why this was, no one quite knows the reason, but most have come to suspect Marie's mother, who was 5 months pregnant with a little boy; who would grow to live half of the mediocre life Marie lives today. When the court came to suspect Mrs. Worthing(Marie's mother) they found her guilty, merely because she could not think up a story to save her sorry behind from the jailer. She would be arrested, and taken to prison shortly after her baby was born.. which was the most devastating part of her life. Just a week and a half after her baby boy came into the world, he was taken away from her; Given to an orphanage, where he died 3 years later from a particularly nasty case of Scarlett Fever.
But the late Mrs. Worthing had had a lover before Mr. Worthing. A playwright by the name of James. Peter James. Mr. James was a man of second chances, of the belief of complete freedom. Mrs. Worthing had given her entire heart to him long ago, but never told another soul. When Mr. James had arrived in Lindebo, he heard of his last love's current residence, and sought to release her. He worked tirelessly with the best lawyer he could find to set the woman he loved free. To see her strangely beautiful but pale face free from the leaded black bars just one more time, or for the rest of his life. It took two years, before Mr. James could come up with a sum of money large enough to bail her out of prison, and even with that the judge was not very keen on letting her go.
Almost three years later, when Mrs. Worthing was roughly twenty years old, she changed her name and became Mrs. James. Mrs. Eliza James. And what a feeling it was, to be free, and in the arms of someone you could never forget. Of someone whose mere voice was always in the back of your mind, whispering the memories you had shared whenever a frown crossed your lips. This marriage was real, and although it would end in tragedy, it was the only
real thing in Eliza James' life. By 21, Eliza and Peter had a baby on the way. It would be a girl, and it would aptly be named after Eliza's mother, Marienne.
By the time Marie was born, Peter James had taken on a new profession. His father had passed on, and he had inherited the new family business.. Railroads. Yes, Gordon James was a recently successful railroad 'tycoon' who had partnered with a trio of men to split the profits on an evening train from the city to the shoreline. And now? His 22 year old son would be taking over the business until the end of his days, while still writing whenever time allowed him a spare minute. Quickly, Peter inherited his father's large fortune, and was able to purchase a very fine and merry home in Lindebo approximately 5 miles from the city. And in that home grew two very fine children. An elder daughter, Marienne Elizabeth James, and a smaller daughter, Isabelle Mary James (who would later fall ill to TB, and later die from the very same disease.)
Isabelle, and Marie (as she was called in place of Marienne) grew very close, and did most everything together. In turn, it was a terrible shame and utter tradgedy for the family with Isabelle developed TB and died shortly after. These were terrible times for illnesses, simply because there was no cure for anything. Science was improving of course, but there was no cure for TB, or Scarlett Fever, or much of anything like them. Marie took her younger sister's death to heart, and therefore the reason for her shyness blossomed.
As Marie James grew, her parents found that at times she had trouble reading. And the reason for this was because she suffered from a light case of dyslexia. At this time, it was not something to be proud of, if your daughter could not read properly, nor see the correct notes to play while playing piano, or any other instrument she might have been playing at the time. And Marie was an avid pianist.. one of the best in Lindebo, as fate would have it. From her 6th year living, Marienne James was seated at a piano bench, tickling the keys with light and merry tunes which filled her home day in and day out. Another reason for her love of the piano, was because her sister had enjoyed it's wonderfully beautiful sound aswell, and had always aspired to play such an instrument, before her illness had gotten the best of her.
Marie was educated by a governess by the name of Bertha McElroy, who was known across the city as being a wonderful care-taker and teacher. She taught Marie about the about reading and writing, and arithmetic. She taught her how to sew, and to sing, although Marie does not pride herself in her singing voice, as it is not entirely all that good. But it was Eliza James that taught her daughter to play the piano so very well. For once a very long time ago, Eliza had been rather skilled aswell.
Eliza James died just a week short of her 32nd birthday. Her only daughter Marie was 12 when her mother passed on, and her father would never be the same man. For love is so very curious, that even when one's heart is aching, one may still find that there is enough love there to pass it on to someone who might truely need it more than one's self. And this person was Marie, who grieved for two years for her mother. Peter James felt.. weak.. no longer whole after the death of his love. He never had a son, so his family business would either parish, or be passed on to Marie's husband. This pained him ever so slightly.. for he had always wished for a son.
And so, for the next 4 years, Marie and her father lived together alone with the maids, and chef, and governess with only the sound of the piano keys to fill up what was once laughter and singing, and spoons hitting against pans to relieve them of warm sauces, or glasses clinking to toast a happy new year, or birthday or anniversary. Peter James has grown quiet, and tends to stay out of most business. He never comes to the door, nor does he like to write many people. He is only half of the man he once was, and nothing shall ever repair him.
Marie, who is now 16 years old, and ready to enter society finds herself holding back. She'd like to fall in love, and explore the world of music and theatre like her father once did, but it's the feeling of loss deep inside her that keeps her from venturing out of her front door. If only someone could give her a little push, she'd be well on her way to a fullfilling life..
