Gabriel has a very clean style to him. He wears simple things; button up shirts (more in darker colors or earth tones) and black or more formal pants and boots -- and he is normally seen in a long black jacket, in which, his various tools are concealed at all times... being a man of law, science and reason - he likes to have certain tools on hand to experiment. But still, he believes appearance is important for impression - and never does he let himself become slobbish.
His hair is dark and of a medium length. At times, he lets it grow a bit longer, but not to the point where it's matty or too 'lower class' looking. His eyes are dark brown and he has fair skin. At times he wears glasses, but that's mostly for reading. Gabe is about 6'0 tall and has a medium build. His general air is quiet, but observant. He is by no means a weakling, and doesn't give off that vibe. He is more or less the strong silent type. By the look of him, Gabe can certainly hold his own -- it's easy to tell he's a man who works hard and gets results. His posture is straight, and he has a scar along his left shoulder blade from a fight; he wasn't able to move fast enough at that time. When investigating a crime, or renewing his role as an Inspector, he is upstanding and always the scholastic gentlemen. All work and no play, and at times, it's obvious; Gabe's eyes at times get a red tint to them, due to the fact he doesn't sleep much.
Personality:
Gabe is perhaps a bit darker, especially when it comes to his past and personal matters. He believes in success, but fairness also. He is a strong believer in people fighting their own battles - save of course, when the matter is a large one and could affect many more. Work comes before play, to Gabe, all of the time. Seeing how he's not quite that interactive or relaxed - Gabe would prefer to be working, and even tries to do extra, in order to keep himself busy and occupied. He is dedicated to all aspects of his work and the law, but still tries to be there for people who need him.
He likes kids, and seems to have a good bond with them. He is moved by their strength, innocence and endurance at such a young age... but even though his heart may warm to them, he doesn't believe in smothering or protecting the children to some degree (cuddling or fawning over them) -- Gabe knows danger, grief, pain, sadness, etc. are necessary for growth -- and these kids will benefit from dealing with these problems as they grow older.
Despite his somewhat intimidating presence or moody disposition, Gabe has a wonderful sense of humor and loves to tease, and joke around - which is part of the reason people seem to be both attracted to him, and turned off - since his humor can sometimes take a sting or dark, malicious twist. But, that's only if he's in a bad mood. He can be incredibly serious when the time is suited, especially if it involves danger, law, or the well being of his friends and allies. He has been known to have a short fuse, especially if a friend or child is being injured or hurt.
Gabe is fairly awkward when it comes to women... at least, he's not sure how to act around them. Deep inside, he fears getting hurt, which more or less makes him push away the women he may become involved with -- he is the first to leave/call off the affair if one should begin. But he can get angry easily, and jealous just as quickly, but keeps such things to himself. He likes and respects women to a point -- but in terms of love he hasn't had a good experience, and therefore, tries to shroud it from his mind entirely. Love, or the idea of love.
In terms of the law, he abides by it - and prides himself on such a thing, knowing the rules inside and out from his time as an Inspector. To Gabe, there are only two kinds of people in the world -- law abiders, and law breakers. It's quite easy to get into the second category.
Gabriel is generally quiet and closed-mouthed about his troubling past and doesn't open up easily. Unless approached directly and addressed, he rarely speaks and prefers more to observe. One can learn more when observing instead of speaking. He's an intelligent man, and gives most credit to following reason, instead of emotion; science instead of fate or whim. He tries to put up a strong front for all, especially in the darkest situations. He has some close friends, but mostly just many acquaintances. He longs for a solid connection or relationship, but has yet been able to sustain one. Gabe knows it's more or less his doing.
History:
Gabriel Denlom was born in Manchester, England, to Mary and John Denlom, his mother - a school teacher, and his father, a man of the law. He was the first born, and had a younger sister, whom died at an early age. He spent most of his childhood in Manchester until when he was 9 his family moved to London because of his father's desire to be closer to work, being the local law enforcement. Gabe didn't really want to go, but his father convinced him it would be a new opportunity, and new opportunities were always good - especially if they involved learning. Education was a door, and it was to be walked through continuously through life if you wanted to get anywhere.
Through out his life, his parents had always taught him themselves, as well as sending him to the best schools; and of course, his father insisted on keeping Gabriel up to date on crime and punishment; hoping one day his son would follow in his footsteps. His father and mother were loving and caring people - insistent though, that their son Gabe knew the discipline of hard work - it paid off, and one day, he would experience it. John Denlom was one of the first Professors at the first university; he aged very well, and for a very long time.
When in London, he got to know the streets well after only a few months. He has attended many schools and lessons; the best in London and the surrounding area: Dulwich College, Galt House, London Waldorf School, Matthews Hall, and many others. Until finally, he finished his schooling, and was expected to join the world as a middle-class citizen. After graduating, Gabe, for the first time, felt free from the strenuous grip his father had once held on him....and desired to become something more -- something he could be proud of, and not be thought of as bad, or useless. John had always told Gabe what to do, and told him what he should be. A man of the law; following his father.
But for now, Gabe wanted to explore the world at the age of 18, and discover things for himself. Though John didn't approve, and at this time, was working in the local law enforcement, and close to retiring. He wanted Gabe to come and work with him there...but his son refused, and moved off to explore. It was on his various travels, in a search for something worthy of his time -- that he met a man named Alan MacTaggert -- who was, a freelance Inspector, as it were. Immediately, the man saw potential in Gabe, despite the boy's tendency to get over cocky and quick to anger. He taught Gabe all he knew about being such a freelance inspector; he was introduced to a group, of sorts - that MacTaggort associated himself with; Gabe was sworn in as their youngest member -- Dragon Chasers. He caught on quick....quicker than most young aspiring Inspectors. As if it was in his blood; MacTaggert was very impressed, and thought himself responsible for the young lad who he'd taken a liking to.
The independent organization of these inspectors moved about, catching and fighting off these criminal creatures. Gabe saw it was rather hard work. He was injured....his first time out on the 'field'...but he wasn't discouraged. He healed quickly, dusted himself off, and was back in the game. It was on the group's various stops to pubs, towns and cities, that Gabe developed a love of liquor and women....two things he began to depend greatly on. Women seemed to flock to him, and people trusted and warmed to him. MacTaggert always told Gabe it was a great thing - trust - and to be used to his advantage.
It was there, in a stop in Oxford, Gabe first met another man, William Hunt....the two formed a bond and got along well together; William told Gabe he'd wanted a place in MacTaggort's freelance organization, but MacTaggort never trusted him. Gabe promised that should he come across another guild, or his OWN, he'd make William Hunt his lieutenant. Gabe of course, grew older, and in his 21st year....made his first conquering defeat over a small, neighboring criminal colony in Stratford - he, alongside MagTaggert, overthrew the family, and captured them into submission for punishment. It had been dangerous, but Gabe had done it. Since it was mostly under Gabe's lead that the criminals were overthrown, MagTaggert agreed to let Gabe rank - keeping his own group, and encouraging Gabe to begin another group of freelance Inspectors.
He was ready to begin his life as a freelance inspector, and didn't need MacTaggert's guidance anymore; he was helping people. As a final parting gift, MacTaggert gave Gabe some of the men from his own group.... to start off in Gabe's newly formed one. And so it was - Gabe took up Leader, a young one, at that - at the age of 22; there were about 10 men under his command; some, not too happy about serving under someone THEY taught.
He went back to Oxford, gathering a few more men for his group. It was there, Gabe again met with William Hunt, who was a few years, his senior....and as promised, Gabe made William his lieutenant. The two seemed to work well together, and William even helped him scrape up the rest of the needed group, with people HE deemed 'exceptional men', telling Gabe he could trust them. And they were off -- the group moved around various other parts of England and the UK, hunting criminals and overturning them to the law for a profit price. It was almost too perfect.
But with a long stop in Dublin, came a meeting between Gabe and Helen. Lovely Helen. The two fell in love instantly, and spoke of marriage and building a family together. She knew of Gabe's life, and was rather fascinated... insisting she come along, once the guild began to move. Though unsure of the idea, Gabe reluctantly agreed, unable to say no to the woman he loved.
Yet over the years, Gabe's odd and trusting nature became his downfall when he was betrayed by his lieutenant, William; who was able to rile the rest of the group into a mutiny against him. Abandoning him for dead near the shores of the London river, William Hunt took over role of Leader, heading off continue the group under his own leadership under the Chief Inspector of their freelance organization....but not without dear Helen, whom William had also began to lust after. But Helen was not so easily swayed, and still missed her beloved - who was now thought to be dead; beaten and broken along the shores.
William, enraged at this 'dedication', killed Helen, and disposed of her remains. Unaware of his dear Helen's fate... Gabe struggled to survive after the brutal beating he'd taken, and being left alone on the shores for dead. Yet all hope was not lost.
He was found, within two days by dock rats and rumrunners; who supplied shore and towns with alcohol and drugs of different sorts illegally. Gabe, even in his state, convinced them to give him a lift off the shores, into the city, and someplace where he could get some medical attention. Upon arrival and recuperation in London, great stories were conjured up by Gabe, and elaborated by others about his 'great escape and recovery' from his years at sea (as was the story he made; not wanting anyone to know he'd been beaten and left to die...a shipwreck, and his only survival by being washed up to shore, seemed more suitable)....it became one of his most daring and mysterious escapes to date.
Determined to get his freelance group back, Gabe had a few setbacks; one involving the discovery, that his dear Helen had been killed by William Hunt, the same man who'd betrayed and abandoned him. It was at that point... Gabe lost it. He wanted revenge, and he wanted it now. He had a drive, and a goal; he wanted to kill the man who betrayed him and slaughtered his love. He wanted to watch, as blood oozed from the body of the bastard, and his skin went pale, and his eyes grew dim. Such a privilege of William Hunt's death belonged to Gabe.
Yet there was a setback, since Gabe didn't know where to begin - so it was, at the age of 24 that Gabriel returned home. Though disappointed at Gabe leaving the first time, his father John was generally pleased his son was back. And it was then -- that John offered Gabe a place at the local law ministry. No desk work, but yet, a protector; an informant and watcher, over the people in the city. Reluctantly, Gabe agreed, and took up the position as a beat runner. He trained for the required years he needed to; mandatory three years, and two of the lessons that included, "Stealth and Tracking", "Investigation" and "The Minds of Criminals" -- by the time he was 27, Gabe was one of the best men in the law ministry.
And the time came, when Gabe was 28, that he was promoted to Inspector. It was a rare thing, but certainly an honor. Though for Gabe, it was a realization. He would probably be in such a position for the rest of his life... he was an Inspector -- and highly in demand, at that. Though dedicated and focused... in the back of his mind will always linger revenge for one William Hunt... for the death of his lost love, Helen. Gabriel worked for the Law Ministry until the age of 33 -- when he convinced the Ministry to give him a leave. He wanted to be more of a freelance Inspector. Such, of course, was considered odd... and Gabe never voiced his reason for taking leave. But the ministry allowed such, having gotten many years of loyal service from Gabriel.
And so it was - at the age of 34, that Gabriel was a freelance Inspector; while devising his own forms of law enforcement to neighboring cities and villages... using his intelligence, and his knack for science and reason. He moved on to the city of Lindeboshire and took up a respectable position there as a man of science and law – knowing people were either law breakers, or law abiders. He assisted in their judgment and enforcement of the law. Gabriel came to be a well known and well respected man. He was offered the position of High Inspector in Lindeboshire, and knowing he could not survive being a freelance Inspector for long - he accepted the position.
Strengths: Before loosing Helen and his drive for life - Gabe showed an amazing quality for leadership, strength, endurance and honor of the law... all of which are still in him, but merely hidden a bit. He's an excellent Inspector with great worth ethics and strong abilities. Gabe is intelligent, and keeps himself in good shape; mentally and physically.
Weaknesses: His constant thought of revenge upon William Hunt for his lost love, Helen -- he doesn't open up to people anymore, has few friends, and doesn't seem to respond well to women anymore. At times he has trouble breathing, due to some light asthma, but only occasionally. He can't stand to see children, women, or family hurt - he also has a short temper and a streak of jealousy.
